  • Japan's Sunwolves Exit Super Rugby As Australia Bid Fails
18 Established 1961 Sports Tuesday, June 2, 2020 Photo of the day Hamilton slams F1 for silence over Floyd death LONDON: World champion Lewis Hamilton criticised the “biggest of stars” in “white-dominated” Formula One for failing to speak out against racism as protests erupted around the United States. The Mercedes driver warned “I know who you are and I see you” as he accused his fellow drivers of “staying silent” following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, during his arrest in Minneapolis. The videotaped incident has triggered unrest in several cities and led to an outpouring of condemna- tion from top athletes including Michael Jordan and Serena Williams. “I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice,” Hamilton wrote on Instagram. “Not a sign from anybody in my industry which of course is a white-dominated sport. I’m one of the only people of colour there yet I stand alone. “I would have thought by now you would see why this happens and say something about it but you can’t stand alongside us. Just know I know who you are and I see you.” Hamilton, the six-time world champion, said he sup- ported only peaceful protesters, not those who have looted stores and set fire to buildings. But he added: “There can be no peace until our so- called leaders make change. This is not just America, this is the UK, this is Spain, this is Italy and all over.

  • THE FUTURE of RUGBY UNION in AUSTRALIA This Submission
SUBMISSION TO SENATE INQUIRY: THE FUTURE OF RUGBY UNION IN AUSTRALIA This submission broadly covers the following Terms of Reference: (a) Australian Rugby Union (ARU) deliberations leading to the decision to reduce Australian teams from 5 to 4 in the national competition; (d) Corporate governance arrangements; and (f) Other related matters. SUMMARY In a document titled, “Supporting Documentation – the Future of Super Rugby” published on 5 September 2017, the ARU cited cost as the principal reason for removing one of the five Super Rugby teams. It said there was a clear causal link between the ARU’s “financial problems” and the decline in Super Rugby team performance and lack of Wallabies success in the period 2006 to 2017. It even went so far as to say that the ARU was facing insolvency if it continued to fund all five teams through to 2020. The information I have set out in this submission outlines my view that it is the actions of the ARU, and the ARU alone, that are responsible for the national body’s parlous financial position and for the decline in the quality of, and support for, the Australian rugby product. It is my contention that the ARU has been nefarious and iniquitous in its dealings for many years, has failed to meet fundamental objects of its Constitution, and has been reckless in its governance. This has been to the severe detriment of the innocent players, coaches, staff and families of the Western Force, and of the game in general. In my view, it is to the ARU’s shame that rugby continues to languish way behind all other sports in Australia’s winter sporting landscape.

  • Fauci Says NFL Season Hopes Rest on Virus, Test Response Virus Will Make the Decision for Us: Fauci
18 Established 1961 Sports Wednesday, May 13, 2020 Photo of the day Italian golfers swing again as lockdown eases FASANO: One of Italy’s best known golf clubs has reopened after two months of lockdown with a handful of players returning to the links under new social distancing rules. San Domenico Golf in Apulia in the heel of Italy’s boot and neighbouring luxury resort Borgo Egnazia reopened at the weekend but face an uncertain future. “We closed at the beginning of March,” said Aldo Melpignano, owner of Borgo Egnazia, where Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel held their wedding in 2012. “But this week the Apulia Region allowed some individual sports to resume and golf is one of them. We jumped at the chance and decided to reopen immedi- ately at the weekend.” The resort and golf club will initially rely on Italian guests but hopes that foreigners will soon also return. “We’re resigned to this reali- ty at least for the summer,” he said. Notable changes in the rules on the greens are that players must keep at least three metres apart when hitting the ball and not remove the flag from the hole. European Tour professional Francesco Laporta has returned to training in the open after two months of hit- ting balls into a net in his garden. Laporta hopes the season will resume again at the end of July. “There will certainly be new rules to respect,” he said, including the lack of spectators. “I think the caddie will be able to keep on following us, working close to us,” he ROME: Red Bull Sailing led by double olympic gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher compete in Italy.
