No names have been changed to protect the innocent. Between May 14-19, 2012, Central Coast Railway Club in partnership with Trains and Travel International and the San Ber- nardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS), operators of Santa Fe Northern 3751, operated the Grand Canyon Limited between Los Angeles and the rim of the Grand Canyon. I was one of over 20 car hosts on the trip, working the train four of the five days it was on the road in dome car Silver Splen- dor. This was my third car host gig in 10 months (I also worked our Northern Cali- fornia Explorer of June 2011 and the August 2011 Trains and Travel-sponsored Feather River Express). But having been a few times accused, there are a few explanations I want very much to make. When this cross-continent story was first suggested, it seemed the simplest sort of thing to undertake. All that was necessary was to put down experiences as they actually occurred. No imagination, or plot or charac- terization—could anything be easier? But when the serial was published and letters began coming in, it be- came unhappily evident that writing fact must be one of the most unattainably difficult accomplishments in the world. In the first place, only those who, having lived long in a particular locality and knowing it in all its vary- ing seasons, are qualified truly to present its picture. The observations of a transient tourist are necessarily superficial, as of one whose experiences are merely a series of instantaneous impressions; at one time colored perhaps too vividly, at another fogged ; according to the sun or rain at one brief moment of time. -

Recollections from the 3751 Grand Canyon Trip 2012
Rail fans, history buffs, and tourists watch as AT&SF 3751 and CB&Q 4960 steam thru the desert near the Grand Canyon More than a decade of hard work restoring AT&SF 2926 to operating condition has NMSLRHS members looking ahead to the time when the classic locomotive takes to the rails once again. Recently, thanks to our mentors from California, four of those members had a taste of big steam in action. In the following article by Albert Leffler, they summarize their experience crewing on the oldest surviving 4-8-4 steam locomotive.. RECOLLECTIONS FROM THE 3751 GRAND CANYON TRIP 2012 May 14 – 19, 2012, witnessed a remarkable steam-powered excursion “The Grand Canyon Limited,” originating at Union Sta- tion in Los Angeles and traveling to the Grand Canyon and back. Powered by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society’s 4-8-4 locomotive Santa Fe No. 3751, the trip was sponsored by the Central Coast Railway Club of the NRHS with contracted support from Amtrak, BNSF, the Grand Canyon Railway and the Arizona & California Railroad. The journey in part was a celebration of Arizo- na’s Centennial year. The consist was made up of 3751 at the head end, two P42 Amtrak Diesels, thirteen privately owned passenger/crew cars and one Amtrak-owned car. Of special note was the round trip from Williams to the Grand Canyon featuring a double-header with 3751 and the Grand Canyon Railway’s steam locomotive CB&Q 4960. During the six day excursion “The Grand Canyon Limited” trav- eled over 1300 miles. -

Dayries Jr. Title: Dayries Train Collection Dates: 1880 - 1989; 1992; 1994 Abstract: This collection contains artifacts and documents offering a view of the history of New Orleans and Louisiana as a major rail station for passenger freight trains. Extent: 3 boxes Accession: 2013.033.001- ______________________________________________________________________ Biographical / Historical Note The first railroad in Louisiana dates back to 1830-31, with the Pontchartrain Rail Company, and the train was pulled by horses. Due to the strength of the trade along the Mississippi River, early railway trade and travel was not strong; the efforts to expand the railways were slow to start and often failed. The progress that had been made came to a crashing halt during the Civil War when the New Orleans’ commercial economy collapsed. It was not until the 1870s, that the rail construction could resume until completion. By the end of the 19th century, Louisiana became one of the nation’s major rail centers, with a number of passenger freight railroads coming into New Orleans everyday. The 1900s saw trains offering the height of comfort for their passengers. With the creation of the stainless steel “Streamliners” in the 1930s, trains were now more lightweight and faster than those made of wood. This also allowed for the inclusion of more passenger amenities. Such as galley style dinning cars were meals were prepared on site, and the inclusion of “roomettes” which offered a bed, sink, and small toilet. Early passenger trains were typically privately funded regional railroads, sometimes only traveling along one or two routes within an area.
