How could it be otherwise? Il Grande Torino era un patrimonio di tutti gli italiani e dello sport mondiale, il culto di quella squadra se possibile da allora è perfino aumentato. Il libro è un tributo romanzato, non di parte, a loro e agli uomini di Ottavio Barbieri. Anzi, a volerla dire tutta la storia del campionato del 1944 rompe la perfezione degli anni dal '42 al '49. Per Bonomi è uno dei motivi per cui quell'impresa fu presto dimenticata. "Se il campionato di guerra fosse stato vinto dal Torino, sono certo che oggi i granata avrebbero uno scudetto in più - dice - Per chi ha dubbi sulla consistenza di quel torneo del 1944, possiedo documentazione di oltre 500 partite disputate tra 75 squadre diverse. Non solo fu un campionato vero, ma era molto impegnativo perché tutte volevano arrivare fino in fondo.

Jones Mahidol University International College Pawinpon Theerawong Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand Abstract: Public and cultural diplomacy are tools for states to enhance their soft power in international affairs. Sports diplomacy is becoming an increasingly important arena for states to enhance their image among foreign publics and increase their country’s visibility via the attractiveness of their cultural asset. This article explores Thailand’s cultural diplomacy by the support given by the Thai state in order to make Muay Thai (Thai boxing) an official Olympic sport. The role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Muay Thai athletes will be examined to find how the Thai state is attempting to increase its soft power by cultural sport diplomacy. Introduction Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, has gained a global admiration and recognition as the national martial art and sport of Thailand. More than its fascinating combat techniques, Muay Thai is enriched with its cultural values, fabricated along the history of the Thai nation. Today, Muay Thai has evolved from its origin of battlefield and obtained the utilitarian multiplicity in fitness, entertainment, sport, self-defence, and so on, not only in its country of origin but worldwide. It is also recognised by the Thai state as a 99 Muay Thai Diplomacy: Thailand’s Soft Power Through Public Diplomacy source of soft power, thus, used as a tool for cultural diplomacy (Sukontasap, 2018).

The tragedy of Superga and the building of the imagined Catholic community. On 4 May 1949, all the players of the top Italian team of the time, Il Grande Torino, died in an air crash. The tragedy of Superga seemed to be representative of Italy in the immediate post-war period and for this reason it managed to connect with almost the entire nation. The images of the carcass of the plane at the base of Turin’s basilica evoked the war images broadcast by the newsreels between 1940 and 1945. The Torino players were heroes and as heroes were celebrated at their funeral, which seemed to indirectly refer to the cult of the fallen in fascist culture. The funeral held in Turin was attended by 500,000 people and managed to unite a large part of the population in a public rite, during which not only did the deaths of the Grande Torino appear to be celebrated, but also those who had died in the Second World War. Public funerals such as those of the Grande Torino gave Italians the opportunity to openly vent intimate emotions linked to personal experience, helping to build the new national Catholic post-war community.
