The final chapter is under review for publication in another journal. Mohammad Saleh Zarepour January 2019 i Avicenna’s Philosophy of Mathematics Mohammad Saleh Zarepour ABSTRACT. I discuss four different aspects of Avicenna’s philosophical views on mathematics, as scattered across his various works. I first explore the negative aspect of his ontology of mathematics, which concerns the question of what mathematical objects (i.e., numbers and geometrical shapes) are not. Avicenna argues that mathematical objects are not independent immaterial substances. They cannot be fully separated from matter. He rejects what is now called mathematical Platonism. -

COURSE INFORMATION PHIL202, Medieval Phil osophy Meets: Tuesday and Thursdays, 9:30 - 10:45, 102 O’Connell; 3 credit hours Course Description This course is an introductory survey of medieval philosophical thought. We will consider some philosophical questions and issues that were central to medieval discussion, including the relationship between faith and reason, the problem of evil, our abili ty to know God’s nature and describe it in human language, the implications of believing in God as a creator, and the famous “problem of universals.” Significant medieval philosophers studied in this course include St. Augustine, Boethius, Peter Abelard, St. Anselm, Avicenna, St. Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. An effort will be made to convey general medieval life and values and their connection to medieval philosophy, as well as to relate the thought of the middle Ages to the philosophy of other historic al periods. -
Module Template: 1. Description of the Course
Module Template: 1. Description of the course PHI 215, Philosophical Issues. This course introduces fundamental issues in philosophy considering the views of classical and contemporary philosophers. Emphasis is placed on knowledge and belief, appearance and reality, determinism and free will, faith and reason, and justice and inequality. Upon completion, students should be able to identify, analyze, and critically evaluate the philosophical components of an issue. 2. Description of the Module This Global module will focus specifically on Islamic philosophical tradition. Students will learn in brief about the history of Islamic philosophy, from the formative period of Al Kindi to Ibn Rushd and the impact this tradition had on Europe and the development of the western philosophical tradition. With this brief introduction to the history, various Islamic Philosophers will be examined across the topics of the course. Later thinkers, such as Mulla Sadra will also be introduced. This module is designed to provide a brief overview of history, and a more in-depth look to Islamic responses to the same questions faced in what is traditionally understood as Western Philosophy. As such, the activities can be done as part of a unified module, or they can be broken up and added to the course when each philosophical topic is covered. 3. Global Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the history of Islamic philosophy and explain its interaction with and impact on Western European philosophy. 2. Identify select Islamic philosophers and their positions on select philosophical issues by reading key Islamic philosophical works and/or secondary sources. 3. Abstract: This is the philosophical tale Hayy ibn Yaqzan, named after the hero of this story and written by the Muslim philosopher Ibn Tufayl (1105-1185). It was the first Arabic novel, and anticipated such European works as Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Emile, as well as the thought of a number of western philosophers including Locke and Kant. This paper will bring out the philosophical themes contained within the novel, centred on those key philosophical questions of ‘what can we know?’ and ‘how can we know?’. -

ABSTRACT This thesis is an in-depth study into two of the UK charity iERA's da'wah narratives: the Qura'nic embryology 'miracle' and the Kalam Cosmological Argument. While the embryo verses have received scholarly attention, there is little to no research in the da'wah context for both narratives. Berger and Luckmann's social constructionism was applied to both, which were problematic. It was found that iERA constructed its exegesis of the embryo verses by expanding on classical meanings to show harmony with modern science. Additionally, it developed the Cosmological Argument by adapting it to Salafi Islamic beliefs. The construction processes were found to be influenced by an online dialectic between iERA and its Muslim and atheist detractors, causing it to abandon the scientific miracles and modify the Cosmological Argument. -

(Bridqeman-GiraudonlArt Resource, N.Y.) r rom the fifteenth through the seventeenth centuries, medieval attitudes and institutions broke down, and distinctly modern cul F tural, economic, and political forms emerged. For many histori ans, the Renaissance, which originated in the city-states of Italy, marks the starting point ofthe modern era. The Renaissance was characterized by a rebirth of interest in the humanist culture and outlook of ancient Greece and Rome. Although Renaissance individuals did not repudiate Christianity, they valued worldly activities and interests to a much greater degree than did the people of the Middle Ages, whose outlook was dominated by Christian otherworldliness. Renaissance individuals were fascinated by this world and by life's possibilities; they aspired to live a rich and creative life on earth and to fulfill themselves through artistic and literary activity. Individualism was a hallmark of the Renaissance. The urban elite sought to demonstrate their unique talents, to assert their own indi viduality, and to gain recognition for their accomplishments. The most admired person during the Renaissance was the multitalented individual, the "universal man," who distinguished himself as a writer, artist, lin guist, athlete. Disdaining Christian humility, Renaissance individuals took pride in their talents and worldly accomplishments-"I can work miracles," said the great Leonardo da Vinci. -

Since my Ibn Tufayl was published, other writings of mine have honored teachers, colleagues, and friends. He is confounded that there need to be so many laws concerning property and money and inheritance but then Hayy comes to realize that most men are in a state that is no better than unreasoning animals and that to expect them all to be brilliant minded, with great characters, is asking too much of most of them. He had no idea how stupid, inadequate, thoughtless, and week willed they are, "like sheep gone astray, only worse. The story is very telling in that it argues that the spiritual journey of each man and woman is an individual pursuit, and that most people will not attain to the heights and sublime delights of being of those who are chosen to be close to God. This will allow you to view the intro in context, leading to a better understanding of the tale that you had just read. The book transcends all historical and cultural environments to settle upon the questions of human life that perpetually intrigue men. It is not surprising to find out that this aspect of Hayy's story appealed to Quakers who put personal experience of truth over clerical authority. Apr 27, Aung Sett Kyaw Min rated it it was ok. -

PAULUS NICOLETTUS VENETUS, Sophismata aurea [Golden Sophisms] In Latin, decorated manuscript on paper Northern Italy, Reggio d’Emilia (Ferrara?) or Padua?, dated 1417 65 ff., complete (collation: i-iii12, iv-v10, vi9 [10-1, with last leaf of quire likely a cancelled blank]), on paper (a number of watermarks, respectively close to (1) Briquet, no. 2637-2638: “Basilic” (e.g. f. 7), Reggio-d’Emilia, 1404, Ferrara, 1406, Udine, 1402-1408; see also Briquet no. 2663: Ferrara, 1417; (2) Briquet, no. 809: “Arc” (e.g. f. 27), Siena, 1410: Lucca, 1423 [but also Cologne, 1419]; (3) Briquet, no. 11687:“Monts” (e. g. f. 57), Padova, 1408-1415 or Briquet, no. 11689, Florence, 1411-1421 or Pisa, 1416), written in a tight and highly abridged gothic bookhand by a single hand (except table of contents on f. 65v, by a different although contemporary hand), text in two columns, quire signatures, a few catchwords (e.g. fol. 24v), paper ruled in brown ink (justification 186 x 140 mm.), paragraph marks in red, some capitals struck in red, painted initials in red or blue throughout, some larger parti-colored initials in red and blue, a variety of contemporary or slightly later marginal annotations and corrections (worthy of in-depth study). Bound in uncovered pasteboard, spine reinforced with snippets of inscribed parchment, spine sewn on three raised thongs left apparent, covers and spine meant to subsequently receive a leather covering (unfinished), pastedowns lined with reused paper copied in a cursive bâtarde script in brown ink, containing excerpts from Italian notarial documents pertaining to the town of Novalino (?) (another form for Nodano, near Brescia?) and the monastery of San Pietro de Novalino and dated 1504 (Some foxing, a few waterstains, mostly marginal, first paper leaf darkened, perhaps due to past exposure, still completely legible).
