Gréard, Member of- the Academy of France.] Two reflections, which at first sight seemingly contra¬ dictory are only so in appearance, suggest themselves from the perusal of this history of human thought from the earliest times to the beginning of the twentieth century. The first is that civilisation, regarded as a whole, is not the work of any one age. If certain races have contributed more effectually and with more distinction than others, the less famous have also borne their share of the work. In the mingling of races that results from conquest, whether by means of war or peace, the conquered nation, at its own time, exerts a reciprocal influence on its conqueror. In short, it is this constant interchange of ideas and beliefs across the ages that constitutes the only real and vital internationalism. The other reflection, not less suggestive, is that in the general movement which leads the civilised world ever forward to a higher goal, every nationality retains its own vigorous life and its own idiosyncrasies. Orientals, Greeks, Romans, French, Saxons, Anglo-Saxons have severally played the part in the world-drama which only they could play. In the formation of human progress we discern many strata, and by studying them we are enabled to estimate the characteristics of the various peoples who laid them there. The Græco-Roman civilisation we comprehend from history and from the fruitful influences it left behind it. In V 2S205Q VI PREFACE Europe we possess a civilisation established in what were formerly called, by a now obsolete distinction, the old world and the new. Can we grasp the notion of a world-wide civilisation, founded on the mutual respect of different nations, and on the diffusion of those ideas and feelings which are at once its consequences, its consecration, and its guarantee ? Such is the splendid vision which is presented to our imagination by M. Loliée’s History of Comparative Litera¬ ture. To the task of painting this picture of human thought it was not sufficient to bring only the equipment of the critic skilled in grouping and epitomising literary master¬ pieces. It required further the sure hand of the true historian to disentangle the complex relationships ; it required philosophic insight to recapture the spirit of the age. The study of comparative literature—this best of means for promoting what we may term an international education, by diffusing throughout the world enlightened notions of tolerance, harmony, and peace—is now being pursued with enthusiasm both in Britain and in Germany. It is M. Loliée’s distinction, to make use of the fine quotation from Ozanam with which he prefaces his work, that he is the first French scholar to attempt in its entirety “ this vast design.” CONTENTS For Czech literature this meant the re­ establishment of Socialist Realism, the official literary style which de­ mands "a truthful and historically correct portrayal of reality in its revolutionary development". Socialist Realism was formulated at the First Congress of the Union of Soviet Writers in "1934 and was adopted by the qnion of Czechoslovak Writers at its First Congress in 1949 after the Communist Party took power in Czechoslovakia. Literature now had to glorify the building of the socialist State, and censorship introduced by the regime eliminated all deviation from the Party line. Only certain publishing houses, controlled by the Communist Party, were allowed to function and writers had to join the Writers' Union and so submit to Party control, or else face persecution, abuse in the press or imprison­ ment. As a result of Khrushchev's speech at the "20th Party Congress (of the Soviet Union) in 1956 and the ensuing "thaw", the Czechoslovak Writers' Union became more tolerant towards writers. Artistic activity began to flourish and works which largely ignored Socialist Realism appeared in the '60S.

    chapter 17 Czech Language and Literature Peter Zusi Recent years have seen a certain tendency to refer to Kafka as a ‘Czech’ author – a curious designation for a writer whose literary works, without exception, are composed in German. As the preceding chapter describes, Kafka indeed lived most of his life in a city where Czech language and society gradually came to predominate over the German-speaking minor- ity, and Kafka – a native German-speaker – adapted deftly to this changing social landscape. Referring to Kafka as Czech, however, is inaccurate, explicable perhaps only as an attempt to counterbalance a contrasting simplification of his complicated biography: the marked tendency within Kafka scholarship to investigate his work exclusively in the context of German, Austrian or Prague-German literary history. The Czech socio-cultural impulses that surrounded Kafka in his native Prague have primarily figured in Kafka scholarship through sociological sketches portraying ethnic animosity, lack of communication and, at times, open violence between the two largest lin- guistic communities in the city. These historical realities have given rise to the persistent image of a ‘dividing wall’ between the Czech- and German- speaking inhabitants of Prague, with the two populations reading different newspapers, attending separate cultural institutions and congregating in segregated social venues. This image of mutual indifference or antagonism has often made the question of Kafka’s relation to Czech language and cul- ture appear peripheral. Yet confronting the perplexing blend of proximity and distance, famil- iarity and resentment which characterized inter-linguistic and inter- cultural contact in Kafka’s Prague is a necessary challenge.

    GRAECO-LATINA BRUNENSIA 18, 2013, 1 TEREZA KESLOVÁ (MASARYK UNIVERSITY, BRNO) YANNIS RITSOS AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA: ANTHOLOGY OF CZECH AND SLOVAK POETS The aim of my contribution is to introduce the work of a Greek leftist poet Yannis Ritsos Anthology of Czech and Slovak Poets (Ανθολογία Τσέχων και Σλοβάκων Ποιητών). The impulse and inspiration for his work were his two visits to Czechoslovakia in the 1960’s. The book was published in 1966 in Greece, but almost all copies were destroyed at the behest of the contemporary ruling military junta. The anthology is unique not just in its creation, in which even Czechoslovak Writer’s Union took part, but more importantly it is unique for its content, because it introduces a wide, well-researched overview of Czech and Slovak poetry of the first half of the 20th century. Key words: modern greek literature, czech literature, slovak literature, translation, Ritsos, Anthology of Czech and Slovak Poets, Cold War cultural politics, Czechoslovak Writers’ Union Yannis Ritsos, a Greek leftist poet, worked on the Anthology of Czech and Slovak Poets1 during his two stays in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. This monumental piece of work fell victim to the right-wing dictatorship in Greece and only a few copies survived. My modest goal is to introduce this unknown work of Ritsos. An in-depth analysis will be a part of my dis- sertation on Yannis Ritsos and his relationship to Czechoslovakia. Firstly, I will briefly mention Ritsos’ foray into translation, then I will move on to the main topic – the circumstances of creating this work, the content of the work, its contribution, and I will finish my lecture by outlining the basic incongruities and questions that arise when this work is studied closely.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis examines the integration of Dionysian mystery cults into the state religions of Greek polis and the Roman Republic. The cults are often portrayed as controversial and immoral in myth and literature, but the official reactions of various ancient city states never restricted the cult’s rituals or showed any concern over moral degeneracy. Rather, official reactions from the state pertained solely to leadership and organization of the cults. This thesis proposes that the reason for this is that Dionysian mystery cults provided an opportunity for women to obtain leadership, authority, and self definition through a means that was usually restricted to only a small number of women who obtained official state priesthoods. Therefore integration of the cults and restriction on leadership was the most common reaction, with some allowances still made for the cults to exist in private forms. When this opportunity for leadership, authority and self definition was opened up to men, as in the case of the Roman Bacchanalia, the state reacted much more harshly since the cult now provided a social structure that undermined those of the Roman Republic.
