AN aspect of Pisistratus, which has not hitherto been utilized in this question (see p. 50), appears to justify another presentment of the evidence which connects him with the Homeric tradition. I shall endeavour to be brief and not to repeat what is common property or irrelevant. The literature and the bearing of the controversy are given with his usual clearness by P. Cauer, Grundfragen der Homerkritik,2 pp. 125 sqq. Cauer's private doctrine, that Homer was for the first time written down by Pisistratus, I consider sufficiently refuted by C. Rothe, Die Was als Dichtung, pp. 5-13. Fantastic views lately promulgated in England are1 dealt with conclusively to my mind by Mr. A. Lang, The World of Homer, pp. 281 sqq., to whose account nothing for con- troversial purposes need be added. On looking back over the literature I find myself most in agreement with Hans Flach, whose treatise, Die litterarische Thdtigkeit des Peisistratos, 1885, has been unduly depreciated. I shall have to repeat my own views expressed in the Classical Review, 1901, p. 7 ; 1907, p. 18; and in the Classical Quarterly, 1909, p. 84. I. THE AUTHORITIES. The passages of ancient authors which bear on this question fall into four groups—those dealing with the Panathenaea, those attesting the transport of the poems to Athens, those asserting the collection of the lays, those asserting interpolation. A. The festival is named, but not the author of the law. An Athenian orator could hardly glorify Pisistratus, and Napo- leon III. is still ignored by the French Republic. To follow Isocrates1 argument literally the reference would be to the fifth century, not the sixth, if Homer owed his popularity to his coincidence with anti-Persian feeling. Probably Isocrates adapted the tradition to his purpose, and the vagueness is intentional. No political embargo restrained the philosopher; he celebrated the tyrant's son as the Leone decimo or the Morgan of his day, purchasing treasures and concentrating men of letters. The author of the Hipparchus is unknown, but it must belong to the fourth century. The next text rests on the authority of a historian who may belong to the same century (Wilamowitz, Horn. That Dieuchidas preferred the democrat to the tyrant or the tyrant's son follows from his national standpoint, which may be observed elsewhere in his fragments (see p. 50). The account of the regulation, its author apart, is evidently identical in these two sources. Dieuchidas seems to have omitted the festival, not a pleasing subject to a Megarian. There was then, at the end of the fourth century, a tradition believed in Athens and in Megara by orators philosophers and antiquaries, that Homer was recited at the Panathenaea exclusively and consecutively, under a regula- tion ascribed to Solon or Pisistratus. B. The passage from the Hipparchus cited above contains the next tradition also: TO, 'Ofir/pov 7rpwTo? eKofiia-ev et? TT)V yrjv TavTr/vi—a. remarkable statement to have been made not more than one hundred and fifty years after the supposed event. That the Homeric poems were previously unknown in Greece is disproved by their diffusion and influence at Sicyon under Clisthenes (Herod. V. 67); that they had already arrived at Athens appears from the appeal made to them in the matter of Sigeion (see p. 46). Athenian history is an all but total blank before the affair of Sigeion, and we can make no state- ment about the early culture of Attica. It is singular that the historical imagination of the later fourth century conceived an epos-less Attica till the PISISTRATUS AND HOMER 35 time of the Pisistratidae. Hippostratus, the Sicilian antiquarian (see p. 43), said that Cynaethus first sang Homer in Syracuse, 01. 69 ; but the statement is generally thought incredible. The same achievement is ascribed to Lycurgus by Aelian V.H. That Homer passed from East to West is true, and the legend in both its forms contains this fact. It is conceivable that the Homeridae, to explain the passing of the poems from their hands, circulated a legend that they had entrusted them to a Western lawgiver on his travels. This origin of the Lycurgus legend at least appears clearly from the older statement in the excerpts from Heraclides' UoXireiai (FHG. Ephorus, on the other hand (ap. Strab. 482), reports the view that Lycurgus met Homer him- self at Chios. The story can hardly have been absent in Timaeus (fr. 4) and Dieuchidas (fr. 5). C. There is more abundant testimony to what Pisistratus is supposed to have done to the poems once in Attica. Cicero may take the lead {de Or. III. 137): sed, ut ad Graecos referam orationem, septem fuisse dicuntur uno tempore qui sapicntcs et haberentur et uocarentnr. hi omnes praeter Milesium Thalen ciuitatibus snis praefuerunt. quis doctior iisdem Mis temporibus, aut cuius eloquentia litteris instruction' fuisse traditur quam Pisistrati ? qui primus Homeri libros confusos antea sic disposuisse traditur ut mine habemus. rum fuit Me quidem cinibus suis utilis, sed ita eloquentia floruit ut litteris doctrinaque praestaret. Cicero's source is made out by Flach /. c. pp. 3 sqq. to have been Pergamene ; the links were Athenodorus son of Sandon, Asclepiades of Myrlea (p. 11, n. 3), Crates. Without insistence on details1 this result maybe accepted. Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references.

Hackworth 2015 2 Abstract This dissertation is a study of the Epigraphical Hymn to Apollo that was found at Delphi in 1893, and since attributed to Athenaios. It is believed to have been performed as part of the Athenian Pythaïdes festival in the year 128/7 BCE. After a brief introduction to the hymn, I provide a survey and history of the most important editions of the text. I offer a new critical edition equipped with a detailed apparatus. This is followed by an extended epigraphical commentary which aims to describe the history of, and arguments for and and against, readings of the text as well as proposed supplements and restorations. The guiding principle of this edition is a conservative one—to indicate where there is uncertainty, and to avoid relying on other, similar, texts as a resource for textual restoration. A commentary follows, which traces word usage and history, in an attempt to explore how an audience might have responded to the various choices of vocabulary employed throughout the text. Emphasis is placed on Athenaios’ predilection to utilize new words, as well as words that are non-traditional for Apolline narrative. The commentary considers what role prior word usage (texts) may have played as intertexts, or sources of poetic resonance in the ears of an audience.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis examines the integration of Dionysian mystery cults into the state religions of Greek polis and the Roman Republic. The cults are often portrayed as controversial and immoral in myth and literature, but the official reactions of various ancient city states never restricted the cult’s rituals or showed any concern over moral degeneracy. Rather, official reactions from the state pertained solely to leadership and organization of the cults. This thesis proposes that the reason for this is that Dionysian mystery cults provided an opportunity for women to obtain leadership, authority, and self definition through a means that was usually restricted to only a small number of women who obtained official state priesthoods. Therefore integration of the cults and restriction on leadership was the most common reaction, with some allowances still made for the cults to exist in private forms. When this opportunity for leadership, authority and self definition was opened up to men, as in the case of the Roman Bacchanalia, the state reacted much more harshly since the cult now provided a social structure that undermined those of the Roman Republic.

For a science of religion which regards only instrumental 4 since acts action as meaningful, magic must be seen as the origin of religion, Ritual and Sanctuary which seek to achieve a given goal in an unclear but direct way are magical. The goal then appears to be the attainment of all desirable boons and the elimination of possible impediments: there is rain magic, fertility magic, love magic, and destructive magic. The conception of ritual as a kind of language, however, leads beyond this constraining artifice; magic is present only insofar as ritual is consciously placed in the service of some end — which may then undoubtedly affect the form of the ritual. Their title in the manuscripts is ëOmrou Ìmnoi. They vary considerably in length. Inthecollectionaswehaveit,thefourlongesthymns,toDemeter(495 lines), Apollo (546 lines), Hermes (580 lines), and Aphrodite (293 lines), are preceded by the last section of a hymn to Dionysus, which originally must also have been a longer one. (For a possible reconstruction of this hymn see West (2001b); cf. also Dihle (2002) for a contrary view.)Of the others, the longest (H. 7,alsotoDionysus) is fifty-nine lines, the shortest (H. 13, to Demeter) only three. Several deities are the subject of more than one hymn, and a few are short pieces composed of extracts from longer poems (13, 17,and18 from the longer hymns to Demeter, the Dioscuri, and Hermes, and 25 from Hesiod’s Theogony). Most of these poems probably belong to the ‘Archaic’ period, i.e. between c. 700 and 500 bc, but some appear to be later in date. An Attic vase painting of c. 470 bc shows a boy holding a papyrus-roll, on which are written what appear to be the opening two words of Hymn 18.     Wandering Poets and the Dissemination of Greek Tragedy in the Fifth and Fourth Centuries BC Edmund Stewart Abstract This work is the first full-length study of the dissemination of Greek tragedy in the earliest period of the history of drama. In recent years, especially with the growth of reception studies, scholars have become increasingly interested in studying drama outside its fifth century Athenian performance context. As a result, it has become all the more important to establish both when and how tragedy first became popular across the Greek world. This study aims to provide detailed answers to these questions. In doing so, the thesis challenges the prevailing assumption that tragedy was, in its origins, an exclusively Athenian cultural product, and that its ‘export’ outside Attica only occurred at a later period. Instead, I argue that the dissemination of tragedy took place simultaneously with its development and growth at Athens. We will see, through an examination of both the material and literary evidence, that non-Athenian Greeks were aware of the works of Athenian tragedians from at least the first half of the fifth century. In order to explain how this came about, I suggest that tragic playwrights should be seen in the context of the ancient tradition of wandering poets, and that travel was a usual and even necessary part of a poet’s work. I consider the evidence for the travels of Athenian and non-Athenian poets, as well as actors, and examine their motives for travelling and their activities on the road. In doing so, I attempt to reconstruct, as far as possible, the circuit of festivals and patrons, on which both tragedians and other poetic professionals moved.
