Darwin and Doubt and the Response of the Victorian Churches Churchman 100/4 1986 Nigel Scotland The Bible and Nineteenth Century Christians Although the Victorian Era was seen as one of the high points in the practice of English Christianity, and although outwardly speaking Church attendance remained at a relatively high level, below the surface many people were beginning to express a variety of doubts about the inspiration of the Bible and about points of Christian doctrine which had been cherished for centuries. These doubts stemmed in the main from two sources: discoveries in Science and the development of Biblical Criticism. The former caused men to question the traditional explanation of world origins and the latter brought doubts regarding the traditional doctrine of the inspiration of scripture. The main root of the problem lay in the Churches’ view of the scriptures. The Church in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century held a view of the scriptures which had been taken over from Greek thought in the early Christian centuries and been further reinforced by the Reformation. They thought of God literally breathing the Scripture into the writers of the Biblical documents. The result of this was that the Bible was held to speak authoritatively on all matters whether they related to man’s relationship to God or to the scientific origins of the Universe. The ordinary Christian man and woman in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries regarded the Judaeo-Christian religion as an Historical religion. It concerned the story of God’s historical acts in relation to his people. -

If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

DOING THE LAMBETH WALK The request We, the Bishops, Clergy and Laity of the Province of Canada, in Triennial Synod assembled, desire to represent to your Grace, that in consequence of the recent decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the well-known case respecting the Essays and Reviews, and also in the case of the Bishop of Natal and the Bishop of Cape Town, the minds of many members of the church have been unsettled or painfully alarmed; and that doctrines hitherto believed to be scriptural, undoubtedly held by the members of the Church of England and Ireland, have been adjudicated upon by the Privy Council in such a way as to lead thousands of our brethren to conclude that, according to this decision, it is quite compatible with membership in the Church of England to discredit the historical facts of Holy Scripture, and to disbelieve the eternity of future punishment1 So began the 1865 letter from the Canadians to Charles Thomas Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England. The letter concluded In order, therefore, to comfort the souls of the faithful, and reassure the minds of wavering members of the church, … we humbly entreat your Grace, …to convene a national synod of the bishops of the Anglican Church at home and abroad, who, attended by one or more of their presbyters or laymen, learned in ecclesiastical law, as their advisers, may meet together, and, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, take such counsel and adopt such measures as may be best fitted to provide for the present distress in such synod, presided over by your Grace. -

“That unhappy War of yours”: Eight Letters from Samuel Laurence to Old Friends in New York City, 1861–1875 DAVID SOUTHERN Samuel Laurence (circa 1850) Photograph by Anthony Coningham Sterling Copyright © National Portrait Gallery, London AMUEL LAURENCE (1812–84), A PORTRAIT ARTIST WHO SPECIALIZED in literary figures both British and American, was possibly Sborn in Guildford, Surrey, beyond which, at least until recently, nothing was known of his parentage, his education, or any signal events from his formative years, except that at some point he changed the spelling of his last name from Lawrence. CSA 24 2008 6 CARLYLE STUDIES ANNUAL He first exhibited his work in London in 1834 and moved easily in circles of London literati. On 10 August 1836, at All Soul’s Church, Marylebone, he married Anastasia Gliddon, cousin and adopted sister of Katherine Gliddon and sister-in-law of Thornton Leigh Hunt. Perhaps as early as 1840 and certainly by 1844, the Laurences were participants in a “Bohemian Phalanstery” modeled upon the utopian philosophy of Charles Fourier (1772–1837), and it included Thornton and Katherine Hunt, George Henry Lewes, and Mary Ann Evans.1 James Spedding likely introduced Laurence to the Carlyles (see CL 29: 355), and at least ten letters to him from Thomas Carlyle (TC) and one from Jane Welsh Carlyle (JWC) can be found in the New York Public Library (Ray collection), the National Library of Scotland (NLS), the University of California Library, Santa Cruz (Strouse collection), and the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections at Duke University’s Perkins Library. To a letter from TC to his sister Jean Aitken, 6 July 1838, JWC added this piquant postscript: “—only think Carlyle is to have his picture taken again this time by an artist of genius—if it succeeds I mean to buy it of the man[.] It was I formerly that used to be asked to sit for pictures but every dog has its day” (CLO). -

Two Books on the Victorian Interest in Hellenism
Journal of The Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology, Okayama University Vo1.2, No.1, pp.169-174, January 1997 Two Books on the Victorian Interest in Hellenism Masaru OGINO* (Received October 29, 1996) In the 1980s there appeared two books about the Victorian attitude toward the ancient Greeks, or about how the Victorians felt about and incorporated the ancient Greek culture. The two books are Richard Jenkyn, The Victorians and Ancient Greece (Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 1980) and Frank M Turner, The Greek Herita.ge in Victorian Britain (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1984). Although they deal with the same subject, their approaches toward the subject are quite different from each other. In this paper, I will pick up two themes from each book- - "Greek Gods and Mythology" and .. Plato and his Philosophy" -- and see the difference in their approaches. 1. INTRODUCTION The Victorians and Ancient Greece by Richard Jenkyns and The Greek Herimge in Victorian Brimm by Frank M Turner- - these two books seem to be like each other; judging from their titles, they seem to give us the same kind of stories about the Victorian attitude toward the ancient Greece. But as it turns out, these two books are totally unlike each other. Of course, no two books are not, or should not, be the same, even if they treat the same subject matter. But in the case of the two books mentioned above, despite the identity of the subject matter- - the Victorians' approaches to the ancient Greeks- - they are almost diametrically different from each other. That is, although they deal with the same subject, their approaches to the subject are completely different Jenkyns' book gives us a general view of how the Victorians accepted the various heritages of the ancient Greek culture, while Turner's book, limiting itself to the main famous figures, gives an academic account of how the Victorians tried to understand the ancient Greeks and to incorporate them into their own age. -

Thomas Henry Huxley
A Most Eminent Victorian: Thomas Henry Huxley journals.openedition.org/cve/526 Résumé Huxley coined the word agnostic to describe his own philosophical framework in part to distinguish himself from materialists, atheists, and positivists. In this paper I will elaborate on exactly what Huxley meant by agnosticism by discussing his views on the distinctions he drew between philosophy and science, science and theology, and between theology and religion. His claim that theology belonged to the realm of the intellect while religion belonged to the realm of feeling served as an important strategy in his defense of evolution. Approaching Darwin’s theory in the spirit of Goethe’s Thatige Skepsis or active skepticism, he showed that most of the “scientific” objections to evolution were at their root religiously based. Huxley maintained that the question of “man’s place in nature” should be approached independently of the question of origins, yet at the same time argued passionately and eloquently that even if humans shared a common a origin with the apes, this did not make humans any less special. Because evolution was so intertwined with the questions of belief, of morals and of ethics, and Huxley was the foremost defender of Darwin’s ideas in the English- speaking world, he was at the center of the discussions as Victorians struggled with trying to reconcile the growing gulf between science and faith.
