Abstracts of Adams County, Pennsylvania Wills (1745-1800) By: Randy J. Miller Preface This project was compiled from the York County Will Books and the York County Estate File at the Adams County Historical Society. The ACHS file is a partial collection of original wills from York County before 1800 and Lancaster County before 1749, pertaining to present day Adams County residents. York County was created from Lancaster County in 1749 and Adams County from York County in 1800. This project includes all present day Adams County townships and also Heidelberg township of present day York County. At the time of creation of Adams County from York County, part of Heidelberg township was left in present day Adams County. Therefore I have included all pre-1800 Heidelberg estates in this work. A small part of Monaghan, Warrington and Manheim townships was also left in present day Adams County but a complete listing of pre-1800 estates are not included. Due to Maryland claiming a large portion of York (Adams) County, some early estates may turn up in the Maryland archives. We wish to thank the following people for their assistance and hard work to compile this index: Larry C. Bolin, Dr. Charles H. Glatfelter, Thomas H. McQuaid, and Rev. Frederick S. Weiser. Introduction A person who dies with a Will (Testate), is leaving a valuable genealogical resource. It will give proof of residence and a general idea when the person died if no death date is known. Used in conjunction with Church Records, missing children or another marriage may become evident. It’s an excellent source for discovering maiden names (a “+” symbol is used to indicate ; intermarried) or learning the names of grandchildren (a “+” symbol followed by a parenthesis indicates ; and). The witnesses are generally neighbors and in the case were no place of residence is given and the individual is not showing up on Tax Lists, the Witnesses have another clue as to where they may have lived. The Executors are the majority of the same family members or close friends. Signatures are often an overlooked source for research. Sometimes comparing signatures from different documents is the only way possible to connect someone. The Testator’s signature can also be compared with the signatures from passenger lists to verify when an ancestor emigrated to America. Of course you’ll need a copy of the original will to carry out this procedure. One should pay close attention to other documents located in a person’s Estate File, such as the Inventory, Account and Vendue List if one exists. The Inventory and Account can give clues to other family members with careful observation and the Vendue List will give you an idea who purchased what at the public sale. In a very few cases the Receipts may survive and you’ll be able to learn whom and what was paid from the Estate and again will pick up those valuable Signatures. If a person died without a Will (Intestate), a Bond will be found. The Bond will usually include 2 or 3 bondsman and 1 or 2 of these people will be the Administrators. You’ll also get a low estimation of the value of the Estate. These bondsman will usually be family members or friends and neighbors and their signatures are of interest. Most of the time it will give proof of residence and a general idea when the person died. In the event someone dies without a Will, the intestate laws of Pennsylvania provide ways for settling of the Estate (Orphans Court). The court handled the Estate as well as appointment of guardians for orphans. The papers of Orphans Court usually list information about surviving heirs and real estate and sometimes the information learned in more than mentioned in a Will. A search for and a careful examination of these papers is recommended. This project must be emphasized as a secondary source and the user should whenever possible refer to the primary source. A lot of times more than one source is needed as proof during genealogical research and a recommendation to reference your information is encouraged. (1) = Reference Number for Contents and Index (2) = Name of Testator (3) = Place of Residence (4) = Book and Page Number from the York County Will Books or ACHS File (5) = Date Will was Written (6) = Date Will was Probated NOTE: The Gregorian calendar did not go into effect until September 2, 1752 when 11 days was added to the Julian calendar. The old Julian calendar’s new year was on March 25th and the new Gregorian calendar’s new year became January 1st. The government offices until that time operated as such, thus for example a Will probated on February 15, 1749 was, according to our present calendar, actually probated on February 15, 1750.
