Together, they are a representative sampling of the range of manuscript collections at HSP, but scholars are urged to pursue fruitful lines of inquiry to locate and use the scores of additional materials in each area that is surveyed here. There are numerous helpful unprinted guides at HSP that index or describe large collections. Some of these are listed below, especially when they point in numerous directions for research. In addition, the HSP has a printed Guide to the Manuscript Collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP: Philadelphia, 1991), which includes an index of proper names; it is not especially helpful for searching specific topics, item names, of subject areas. In addition, entries in the Guide are frequently too brief to explain the richness of many collections. Finally, although the on-line guide to the manuscript collections is generally a reproduction of the Guide, it is at present being updated, corrected, and expanded. This survey does not contain a separate section on land acquisition, surveying, usage, conveyance, or disputes, but there is much information about these subjects in the individual collections reviewed below. -

cc Arbitrary rule" and the Eighteenth-Century Discourse ojGuinea MALVERN VAN WYK SMITH INTRODUCING THE English edition of Anders Sparrman's Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope in 1785, the anonymous translator remarks: "Now every authentic and well-written book of voyages and travels is, in fact, a treatise of experimental philosophy" ( 1.27). By the late eighteenth century Africa had become a par• ticularly popular focus and subject for such speculation. The Criti• cal Review wrote in October 1792 : "To explore the internal parts of Africa seems now to be the great subject of the philosopher, the botanist, and the politician" (qtd. in James 19). But the phenom• enon was hardly new, and in this paper I shall attempt to show how a particular late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century discourse of Africa shaped certain later Enlightenment preoccupa• tions which preceded the abolition of slavery. My argument will be that the obsessive concern in African travelogues of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the apparent "cruelty" and "despot• ism" of African forms of rule was not the expression of purblind ethnocentricity that it is now often taken to be, but was rather the imprint of an anxious contemporary European polemic surround• ing the European transition from absolutist to constitutional monarchies. Travel writing lends itself readily to the speculative survey. Travelling into and through the unknown is essentially a herme- neutic process, a reading of the unfamiliar which thus becomes a constitutive process, in which the "eye/1" of traveller/narrator constructs, as much as discovers, the object of investigation. -

THE DROPMORE PAPERS (ADD. MSS. 58855-59494) ROBERT A. H. SMITH WILLIAM WYNDHAM, Baron Grenville (1759-1834), Prime Minister from 1806 to 1807 and earlier, from 1791 to 1801, Foreign Secretary under Pitt the Younger, left on his death over 300 portfolios of letters and papers and over 150 letter- and precis-books, the fruits of a public career of some fifty years. The Dropmore Papers, named after Grenville's country home, were acquired by the Department of Manuscripts in 1970. The arrangement of this large collection had been started, apparently at various times, during Grenville's lifetime but remained uncompleted at his death and thereafter. A few historians had used the papers when they were in the possession of the Fortescue family, but they were generally known only through the ten-volume Historical Manu- scripts Commission Report (1892-1927), almost entirely the work of one man, Walter Fitzpatrick.^ J. Holland Rose once declared that he found *no striking phrase which glitters amidst the leaden mass of [Grenville's] speeches and correspondence'.^ Grenville, a slow taciturn man, was rarely a witty or lively correspondent, but 'the leaden mass' remains both an unavoidable obstacle and an invaluable source for historians of Grenville's times. 'Fhis is partly because of Grenville's long public career, both in office and out, and the consequent bulk and scope of material, and partly because the papers of several of his contemporaries, most notably those of Henry Dundas and William Pitt, have been dispersed. The Dropmore Papers supplement other collections in the Department of Manuscripts, such as the Holland House, Auckland, Rose, Wellesley, Liverpool, Fox, and Leeds papers, and, furthermore, join other Grenville family collections acquired earlier, namely papers of his father George Grenville; of Earl Temple, Lord Grenville's uncle; and of George, Marquis of Buckingham, and Thomas, the politician and bibliophile. -

Plath Profiles 83 After Ariel: An Argument for Sylvia Plath's Phantom Third Poetry Collection Anna Journey, University of Southern California Phantoms abound in the Sylvia Plath canon. Plath burned her second novel, meant as a gift for her husband, the British poet Ted Hughes, on his birthday in August 1962. Doubletake, Plath's unfinished third novel, "disappeared somewhere around 1970"—long after Plath's suicide in February 1963—Hughes suggests in his introduction to Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams (1). According to Diane Middlebrook's biography of the Hughes/Plath marriage, Her Husband, Plath wrote her patroness, Olive Higgins Prouty, that "[Doubletake's] plot was 'semiautobiographical about a wife whose husband turns out to be a deserter and philanderer'" (198). Hughes's mistress, Assia Wevill, after reading the nascent novel, grew offended by the manner in which Plath caricatured the Wevills, as "a 'detestable and contemptible' couple called 'The Goos-Hoppers'"; Wevill openly hoped Hughes would destroy the unfinished novel (Middlebrook 220). More disturbingly, Wevill absconded with some of Plath's valuable manuscripts, which she sent to her sister, intending the stolen literary relics as a "nest egg" for Shura (the daughter Wevill had with Hughes; the daughter she later murdered during her own suicide via a gas oven) (Middlebrook 232). One is left wondering, "What happened to Doubletake?" Even The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath (2000), edited by Karen Kukil, remain incomplete, as a total of two bound journals that Plath used during the last three years of her life are missing from the oeuvre. Hughes, in his foreword to Frances McCullough's 1982 abridged edition of Plath's journals, claims that one of the journals simply "disappeared," much like the draft of Doubletake, while he deliberately destroyed his wife's other "maroon-backed ledger," in order to spare their children from reading about the darkness of their mother's final days (xiv). -

I am the ghost of an infamous suicide, My own blue razor rusting in my throat. Sylvia Plath, "Electra on Azalea Path" For most people, Sylvia Plath's work represents the epitome of suicidal poetry. The corpus of her poetic oeuvre forever captures the exhumation and resurrection of the material corpses it recomposes through figuration—fragments of bone from the colossal father, the "rubble of skull plates" in the cadaver room, Lady Lazarus' perpetual suicide strip-tease (Collected Poems 114). Plath's poetry is virtually a playground of decomposition; her speakers inhabit a "cramped necropolis," piecing together a ferocious love gathered among the graves (117). By collecting the force of this energy, Plath's work evidences a honed, disciplined voice of controlled extremity. This leads many critics, and often my students, to read into Plath's poetic intensity that she is an angry poet—considering her characters and poetic speakers' fierce energy as evidence of Plath's own anger. But as Plath's speakers wrestle with their anger on the page, they reveal the pain they feel and peace they fiercely and desperately wish for. This anger derives from their frustrated desire to find a lasting peace by recovering language from the constriction of suicidal thinking. Her speakers' rage represents the voice of anger turned against the self. Scavenging the ruins of the suicide's inner landscape—their inscape—Plath's speakers piece themselves together, death after self-inflicted death, becoming virtual experts at trying to recover from failed suicides.1 1 The field of Suicidology uses the term "completed suicide" to distinguish "individuals who have died by their own hand; have been sent to a morgue, funeral home, burial plot, or crematory; and are beyond any therapy" (Maris 15). -

Broadcasting Regular broadcasting in Great Britain has existed since 1922. The BBC is the UK's publicly funded radio, television and internet broadcasting corporation, and is the oldest and largest broadcaster in the world. It operates several television channels and radio stations both in the UK and abroad. The BBC's international television news service, BBC World, is broadcast throughout the world and the BBC World Service radio network is broadcast in thirty-three languages globally. The domestic services of the BBC are funded by the television license, a legal requirement for any British household with a television receiver that is in use to receive broadcasts, regardless of whether or not the householders watch BBC channels. Households which are the principal residence of any person over 75 are exempt and the requirement does not extend to radio listeners. The BBC World Service Radio is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the television stations are operated by BBC Worldwide on a commercial subscription basis over cable and satellite services. It is also this commercial arm of the BBC that forms half of UKTV along with Virgin Media.
