Box 1269 Gainesville, Florida 32602 USA ABSTRACT Over a seven-year period, approximately 35,000 spiders representing 26 families, 133 genera, and 234 species were captured in Washington County, Mississippi, by pitfall, sweepnet, vacuum, bag, and hand. Specimens were collected in 10 different habitat types and in four vegetational strata . Old-field habitats yielded the most species (152) and residential lawns the fewest (14) . Considering all habitats sampled, the ground layer produced 111 species, the herbaceous strata 133, the shrub layer 49, and the tree strata 30 species . The sweepnet method of capture obtained 128 species, pitfall 95, hand 61, vacuum 53, and bagging 19 species. The largest number of species were obtained in spring and early summer (maximum of 125 in May), with the fewest in mid-winter (Jan . = 24) . Twenty-one species were considered abundant, 51 common, 67 uncommon, and 95 rare . Additions to the state list of Dorris (1972) number 102 species, for a new state total of 364 species . A comparison with the North American fauna and with other surveys indicates that Washington County is underrepresented both in cursorial forms active on the soil surface and web-spinning forms typical of undisturbed habitats . -

Salticids use their vision in many behaviors, including predation and courtship. Recently evidence of their ability to sense airborne vibrations, i.e. sound, was published. I used a specialized jumping-spider-specific eyetracker to study the visual reaction of the retinas of the jumping spider Phidippus princeps when exposed to the sound of a predator. I used a generic wasp sound, previously shown to induce a startle response, as stimulus and played it from different directions. The spiders showed strong reactions to the sound stimulus by large increases in retinal movement when exposed to the stimulus, and they showed no habituation to the stimulus over three rounds of exposure. However, I found no indication that the direction of retinal movement corresponded to the location of the sound source. -

The first catalogue of Lampyridae was published in 1907 and since that time, the classification and systematics of fireflies have been in flux. Several more recent catalogues and classification schemes have been published, but rarely have they taken phylogenetic history into account. Here I infer the first large scale anchored hybrid enrichment phylogeny for the fireflies and use this phylogeny as a backbone to inform classification. -

Spiders are the seventh most diverse order of arthropods globally and are prominent predators in all prairie habitats. In this chapter, a checklist for the spiders of the Prairie Provinces (767 recorded species and 44 possible species) is presented along with an overview of all 26 families that occur in the region. Eighteen of the species from the region are adventive. Linyphiidae is by far the dominant family, representing 39% of all species in the three provinces. Gnaphosidae and Lycosidae each represent 8% and three other families (Salticidae, Dictynidae, and Theridiidae) each account for 7%. A summary of biodiversity studies conducted in the Prairies Ecozone and from transition ecoregions is also provided. The Mixed Grassland Ecoregion has the most distinctive assemblage; Schizocosa mccooki and Zelotes lasalanus are common only in this ecoregion. Other ecoregions appear to harbour less distinctive assemblages, but most have been poorly studied. Lack of professional opportunities for spider systematists in Canada remains a major barrier to the advancement of the taxonomy and ecology of spiders. Résumé. Jakob Revised: 26 November 2008 /Accepted: 16 March 2009 / Published online: 31 March 2009 # Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2009 Abstract Our objective was to determine whether an animal’s decisions to cross inhospitable open space are influenced by the visual characteristics of targets it can see across the space. We studied jumping spiders (Salticidae) in the genus Phidippus. We considered the effect of target size (short vs. tall) and distance (close vs. distant) in no-choice experiments. How often spiders approached close targets, regardless of target size, was not significantly different from how often they approached tall, distant targets, but they approached close targets of either size significantly more often than short, distant targets. When presented simultaneously with short, close and tall, distant targets the spiders’ choices did not differ significantly from random. We also tested for the effects of the contrast of targets with their background and found that the spiders crossed open space to reach green, but not white, targets, regardless of background. Finally, spiders were more likely to approach a green grass-like target rather than a target composed of geometric shapes. We conclude that target size, distance and appearance all influence the spiders’ willingness to cross open space. -

However, within the beetles, very little work on opsins has been conducted. Here we look at the visual system of fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), which offer an elegant system in which to study visual evolution as it relates to their behavior and broader ecology. -

J. Acad. Entomol. Soc. 8: 11-29 (2012) The Lampyridae (Coleoptera) of Atlantic Canada Christopher G. Majka ABSTRACT Knowledge of the Lampyridae of Atlantic Canada is surveyed. Eleven native, Nearctic species and one adventive, Palaearctic species (Phosphaenus hemipterus known from three localities in Nova Scotia) are present. Nine new provincial records of lampyrids are reported including Pyractomena angulata, Lucidota atra, Photinus obscurellus, Pyropyga decipiens, and Photuris fairchildi, which are newly recorded in Prince Edward Island; Pyractomena linearis, Photinus obscurellus, and Photuris fairchildi newly recorded in New Brunswick; and Photinus obscurellus newly recorded in Labrador. Pyractomena borealis, Pyractomena linearis, and Photinus obscurellus, are newly recorded on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, and Ellychnia corrusca is newly recorded in Labrador. Photuris pennsylvanica is removed from the faunal list of all the provinces of Atlantic Canada. This species does not occur in Newfoundland and Labrador and previous records in the Maritime Provinces are, instead, ascribable to Photuris fairchildi. Photinus ardens is also removed from the faunal list of Newfoundland and Labrador as the previous record of this species was erroneously based on specimens collected on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and incorrectly attributed to insular Newfoundland. The distribution, relative abundance, and seasonal occurrence of all species in Atlantic Canada are illustrated. Keys to species are provided as well as colour habitus photographs to assist with identification.T he biology of the family is briefly summarized and aspects of the biogeography, phenology, and bionomics of the individual species are discussed.
