Many hands lent themselves, strumming autoharps and bowing strings, accompanying the lilting, soaring voice that can not be mistaken. Mirah’s whole new batch of songs stands solid and un-afraid; pianos and drums, truth and protest. If her first album, you think it’s like this but really it’s like this (KLP112) snuck up and surprised you, then her second album Advisory Committee (KLP135) stunned you with cannon fire. Now sit back and relax as C’mon Miracle washes over you and etches its subtle ways into your psyche. Mirah recorded most of C’mon Miracle at Dub Narcotic studio with Phil Elverum and Calvin Johnson. Lori Goldston (of The Black Cat Orchestra), Emily Kingan (of The Haggard and Sextional), Khaela Maricich (The Blow), Aaron Hartman (OTR), Jason Anderson (Wolf Colonel) and Nora Davidson and Themba Lewis (of Liarbird) are among the other players and helpmates who knew just how to coax the right sounds out of Olympia’s late summer and make this album such a whirl of audio pleasure.

We hope that you will learn new things and come to visit t is no secret around the Village that I like to keep my eye on the “dashboard” – a set of key the Village soon. There is always something fun to do at indicators that I am consistently checking to make sure we are steering OSV in the right direction. In fact, Welcome O l d S T u R b ri d g E V I l l a g E . I take a lot of good-natured kidding about how often I peek at the attendance figures each day, eager to see if we beat last year’s number. And I have to admit that I get energized when the daily mail brings in new donations, when the sun is shining, the parking lot is full, when I can hear happy children touring the Village, and the visitor comments are upbeat and favorable. Volume XlIX, No. 2 Summer 2009 Special Annual Report Edition I am happy to report these indicators have been overwhelmingly positive during the past year – solid proof that Old Sturbridge Village is building on last year’s successes and is poised to finish this decade much stronger There is nothing quite like learning about history from than when it started.

  • The Opening of the Atlantic World: England's
THE OPENING OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD: ENGLAND’S TRANSATLANTIC INTERESTS DURING THE REIGN OF HENRY VIII By LYDIA TOWNS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Texas at Arlington May, 2019 Arlington, Texas Supervising Committee: Imre Demhardt, Supervising Professor John Garrigus Kathryne Beebe Alan Gallay ABSTRACT THE OPENING OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD: ENGLAND’S TRANSATLANTIC INTERESTS DURING THE REIGN OF HENRY VIII Lydia Towns, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2019 Supervising Professor: Imre Demhardt This dissertation explores the birth of the English Atlantic by looking at English activities and discussions of the Atlantic world from roughly 1481-1560. Rather than being disinterested in exploration during the reign of Henry VIII, this dissertation proves that the English were aware of what was happening in the Atlantic world through the transnational flow of information, imagined the potentials of the New World for both trade and colonization, and actively participated in the opening of transatlantic trade through transnational networks. To do this, the entirety of the Atlantic, all four continents, are considered and the English activity there analyzed. This dissertation uses a variety of methods, examining cartographic and literary interpretations and representations of the New World, familial ties, merchant networks, voyages of exploration and political and diplomatic material to explore my subject across the social strata of England, giving equal weight to common merchants’ and scholars’ perceptions of the Atlantic as I do to Henry VIII’s court. Through these varied methods, this dissertation proves that the creation of the British Atlantic was not state sponsored, like the Spanish Atlantic, but a transnational space inhabited and expanded by merchants, adventurers and the scholars who created imagined spaces for the English.
