If you would have told me when we started that it would be more than a one-off effort, I wouldn’t have believed you. With nine Kentucky Derbies under our belt, I find myself reflecting back on the journey because in truth, the evolution of the Derby Analysis mirrors the evolution and growth of our work in herd dynamic profiling. I have learned so much over the years and I think of how far we have come at THT Bloodstock from where I started, with little more than an idea and a desire to discover what there was to be discovered. I let instinct guide me in the environmental classroom, immersing myself in the very nature of the predator/ prey interaction, my love of sports and my passion for horses merging over time, pieces that slowly assembled into what we are today. -

OSCAR’S 2008 TRAVERS GREEN SHEET “IT’S A GRADE I STAKE, BUT WHERE’S THE BEEF?” The table is set ($1 million place setting); the venue is outstanding (what could be better than the SPA in summer?). There’s even a top class restaurant nearby (Siro’s is only a sprint distance away), but as for the menu? To quote from the dearly departed octogenarian Sara Peller, “Where’s the beef?” Racing fans are always hungry for a good stake. The Travers usually satisfies our appetite by presenting a selection of the best 3 year-olds in the country. This year, however, the menu contains a lot of Kentucky Derby leftovers. What would have been the prime choices are either passing the race (Big Brown), deceased (Eight Belles) or injured (Denis of Cork). What’s left on the menu is competitive in ability, if somewhat disappointing in talent. There is the Belmont winner Da’Tara, but the Belmont was his only win outside of his maiden score. There are the Derby also rans Pyro, Colonel John, Tale of Ekati, Cool Coal Man and Court Vision; none of whom whet the appetite the way they once did leading up to the Derby, and now more truly represent the Derby’s sponsor Yum Brands – running more like fast food than the Galloping Gourmet! What about some new ingredients to spice up this stake? Tizbig, Mambo in Seattle, Amped, Harlem Rocker, and Tres Borrachos? Actually they are more like salt and pepper than curry powder! Some additional flavoring but hardly Fra Diavolo. -

BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks. A Statistically Valid Approach Unlike other ratings that are calculated based on hypothetical opportunity within a limited group of horses, TrueNicks references the international database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all starters and stakes winners on a given cross. The Statistics The TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: the Sire Improvement Index (SII) and the Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Each figure compares the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters. -
