Well, what a busy end to our summer…. So, I survived my week at RAF St. Mawgan, with all the sta and cadets who attended Summer Camp. e cadets even coped with my driving all week, after I pulled the short straw and spent my week on bus duty! We Having enjoyed shooting so much on summer camp, 2 of our enjoyed many visits all around Cornwall and at various sections on cadets joined me on an air ri e shoot at Bideford Sqn. “With the base its self, but I’ll let the cadets tell you all about it and the only a few cadets there. I loaded my rst one, checking my safety catch of course! Lining my sights up with the target, my rst shot landed straight in the bullseye! I was so proud, I did it again, until all my rounds were gone, not all with quite such accuracy, but when I was nished, I went with Sir to check my target. He was shocked, but not as shocked as me, when my target was scored, I was so happy with my score! My wrist was aching from the weight of the ri e, but I didn’t mind, and was looking forward to my next shot. It was a good day and I got to shoot over 100 rounds, I also managed to achieve my Trained Shot badge, along with Cdt orne. Much superior to the local supply, some who had already been wired for the Hartland system changed over and the local supply was in serious trouble. In modern parlance, the writing was on the wall! Overtures were made by the Company, o ering to buy out the Hartland Light and Power Company, but - perhaps because of all the frustrations they had endured over the years - the directors refused. Meanwhile, other events were happening worldwide that would hasten its end more speedily, with storm clouds gathering over Europe as war threatened. e nal reference to the local supply in the ‘Hartland Chronicle’ was in No. 491, November 1939 (following the outbreak of war in September): Dr. Sawers was unable to attend the Women’s Institute on ursday, 28th September 1939 for his lecture, because the meeting was held in the afternoon instead of the evening on account of lighting restrictions. At last month’s meeting a reply was received from homes. But a major bene t shared by everyone was the public street lighting provided by the Company. Local people did not take to the system in any great numbers and when the plant was eventually sold just three dozen house meters were listed. ese were heavy mercury-type meters, not known for their e ciency. Basil Dark, who retired after fty years with both West Devon and later SWEB, recalled being told that all that was needed was a sharp clout on the side of the meter to keep the size of the bill down! Competition from outside was also always threatening, though it took years to actually arrive. Two years after promising to have a supply here within the year, Christy Bros, owners of West Devon Electric Supply Company, were again making proposals, but again nothing materialised. I am not exactly sure just when the West Devon Electricity Company nally brought a supply into Hartland but the ‘Chronicles’ reveal that the matter was still brewing years later: No. 478, March 1938 - To Bideford Rural District Council, Tuesday, 22nd November 1937, West Devon Electric Supply Company Limited applied for consent to the erection of overhead mains at Hartland. APPLE JUICING AT WELCOMBE VILLAGE HALL As many of you will be aware, this autumn produced a bumper crop of apples and the community press in Welcombe was in action for the best part of a month. We were very grateful to all the other users of the village hall for tolerating a constant mountain of apples, the crushing and pressing machinery, hundreds of bottles both full and empty, tanks of juice, a sticky kitchen oor, and the all pervading smell of crushed apples. Sadly we failed to locate any pig owners who might have used the pulp, so it was all composted. ank you to everyone who brought their fruit to us - we also did one batch of delicious pear juice - and produced an impressive thousand plus bottles. We were also able to do a single variety pressing of an old Devon apple by the name of Tom Putt. ere were several pressings which combined two named apples - Bramley and Russet, but the unnamed mixed juices made for delicious and interesting avours.
