INTRODUCTION The aim of this thesis is to analyze a specific period of the 1970s in Muriel Spark’s writing career. The thesis opens with a brief summary of author’s life that is essential for identification of aspects typical for her writing style and topics she usually deals with in her books. This summary consists of ambivalent nature of her characters, her own convertion to Catholicism, which is a crucial aspect not only of her life, but also of her characters. It also focuses on other autobiographical facts that appear in her works and are important components of her character’s nature in many cases. These facts are, for instance, her interest in travelling, which is represented by various settings she uses in her works or Spark’s teacher at primary school whose model was applied for a character of Miss Jean Brodie, and so forth. Literary genres as well as personalities of that time, her contemporaries and collegues that were inspiring or on the other hand influential for Muriel Spark’s writing style are also mentioned. It is followed by an overview of previous

    Page !1 of !26 Gaenor Burchett-Vass March 2014 Repetition and narrative time in Muriel Spark’s ‘The Bachelors’, ‘The Ballad of Peckham Rye’ and ‘A Member of the Family’ ‘Story time’ is not the same thing as ‘narrative time’. The Russian Formalists, active during the early years of the twentieth century, used the terms ‘fabula’ and ‘sjuzhet’ to refer respectively to the ‘chronological sequence of events’ and the ‘order and manner in which [these events] are actually presented in the narrative’ (Jefferson and Robey, 1986: 39). Scenes which occur once in story time, the fabula, can be repeated many times in the narrative, or the sjuzhet, and any such scene will be brought into prominence, or foregrounded, thereby inviting the reader to assign significance to it. Genette’s work on ‘frequency’ in the second half of the twentieth century is built on the foundations established by the Formalists. In his Narrative Discourse, first published in French as Figures III in 1972, Genette distinguishes three possible methods available to the writer for recounting events: the singulative, repetitive and iterative. More recent work among narratologists has pinpointed the difficulties inherent in the fabula/sjuzhet distinction, briefly summarised as follows. The fabula is essentially a construct, put together by the reader at the time of reading and revised to create a final version once the text has been read. It has no external existence unless the fabula and sjuzhet can be seen to be absolutely identical. A ‘primary’ narrative must be identified to enable the construction of a fabula: this is not always straightforward and disagreements cannot easily be resolved.

Robert Hosmer’s introduction – gleeful, gossipy, gushing – sets the tone for this compelling collection of intimate encounters with the late Dame Muriel Spark by connoisseurs of her poetic art. The editor has assembled a veritable Brodie Set who can scarce contain their enthusiasm for their prime subject. Hosmer is clear about the book’s aims, hoping “readers of this volume will gain a keen sense of Muriel Spark as a person, derived in good measure from reading her own words, unfiltered and uncensored, and a considerable critical appreciation of her work as articulated by some of her best readers”. Of the sixteen essays gathered here, seven are previously published, so I will pass over the elegant insights of my colleague Gerry Carruthers, as well as those of Frank Kermode, John Lanchester, Doris Lessing, John Mortimer, and John Updike, and the fascinating interview Hosmer conducted with Spark in 2005. The volume opens with a section entitled “The Work”, in which Gabriel Josipovici’s erudite exploration of Spark’s critique of fiction within her fiction is the opening essay: “The villains in Muriel Spark’s novels are those who cannot see the difference between fiction and reality.

    Studia Litteraria Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis 6 (2011) DOI: 10.4467/20843933ST.11.005.0303 BOŻENA KUCAŁA Instytut Filologii Angielskiej Uniwersytet Jagielloński The Natural and the Supernatural in Muriel Spark’s Fiction Abstract A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fi ction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is mani- fested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fi ction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fi ction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fi ction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fi ction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience.

SCENIC AND TEXTUAL VENICE IN MURIEL SPARK’S TERRITORIAL RIGHTS1 Tomás Monterrey Muriel Spark chose Venice as the main setting for her fifteenth novel, Territorial Rights, published in 1979 between The Takeover (1976) and Loitering with Intent (1981). Territorial Rights anticipates the latter’s metafictional concerns about novelistic distortions and fabrications of truth on rendering life facts. With the former it shares a satirical view on western moral decadence, an Italian background, and an illustrative instance of a “takeover,” as young Robert Leaver begins his criminal career by challenging American millionaire Mark Curran in his Venetian territory, while both are ultimately ousted and defeated by the even more illicit detective-agency GESS. This Sparkian “entertainment” (so highly praised by Graham Greene), or “international comedy of manners,” with a heavily- plotted story and the “starkly realistic texture of a thriller” may aptly typify a new departure in the Scottish novelist’s art of fiction.2 The narrator’s apparently limited omniscience brings together a compelling polyphony of characters and thus a rendition of events through their individual, unreliable, and often contradictory points of view.

    Through Expatriate Eyes: Muriel Spark, Alexander Trocchi, and the Empowerment of Scottish Literature during the 1960s Sylvia Bryce-Wunder Scottish Literature benefited from and contributed to the revolutionary and experimental spirit of the 1960s. Many Scottish writers during this period challenged the nationalistic approach to literary representations of Scottish culture, experience, and identity. This paper argues that the cosmopolitan writings of Alexander Trocchi and Muriel Spark empowered Scottish Literature by transcending the real and imagined borders of Scotland and challenging the limitations imposed by the Scottish Literary Renaissance of the inter-war years. During the 1960s, disagreements amongst some Scottish writers centred on the question of how to represent ‘Scottishness’ in literary form.     CARACTERIZACIÓN E IDENTIDAD FEMENINA EN LA OBRA DE MURIEL SPARK Margarita ESTÉVEZ SAÁ Universidad de Santiago de Compostela RESUMEN La escritora escocesa Muriel Spark nos ha presentado a lo largo de su obra una gama de personajes femeninos tan variada que impide una concepción esencialista y predeterminada sobre la condición femenina. En este trabajo analizaré el proceso de reflexión sobre su identidad que llevan a cabo algunas de las protagonistas de las obras más conocidas de Muriel Spark. Comprobaremos cómo nos topamos en su ficción con una serie de personajes que proyectan imágenes idealizadas de sí mismas que contrastan con las versiones que se les intenta imponer desde fuera. Este trabajo analiza, además, la consecuente reflexión que se detecta en las obras de Muriel Spark sobre las posibilidades y los límites del proceso de caracterización del personaje femenino. Palabras clave: identidad, caracterización, Muriel Spark, personaje femenino. ARTÍCULO La escritora escocesa Muriel Spark (nombrada Dama del Imperio Británico en 1993) juega recurrentemente en sus novelas con dicotomías tradicionales como verdad versus ficción, realidad versus fantasía o ilusión, vida versus muerte, etc. Estos pares son 99 MARGARITA ESTÉVEZ SAÁ continuamente subvertidos y, lo que es más importante en mi opinión, la autora reflexiona y ejemplifica las ventajas de esta subversión, así como los peligros y desventajas que puede conllevar este juego para la construcción o simplemente para la reflexión en torno a la identidad femenina1. Me interesa particularmente en el presente trabajo atender al juego que la escritora mantiene con la tradicional oposición verdad vs. ficción, que tendré en cuenta en las líneas que siguen con el objeto de analizar las consecuencias que tiene para la noción de identidad femenina que la autora baraja en su ficción.
