Studia Litteraria Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis 6 (2011) DOI: 10.4467/20843933ST.11.005.0303 BOŻENA KUCAŁA Instytut Filologii Angielskiej Uniwersytet Jagielloński The Natural and the Supernatural in Muriel Spark’s Fiction Abstract A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fi ction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is mani- fested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fi ction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fi ction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fi ction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fi ction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience. -

Ⓒ Hitotsubashi University CRIME AND CREATIVITY: THE ANTI-IMAGINATION NOVELS OF MURIEL SPARK REIKO KAWAMOTO I There are two kinds of professionals who inhabit Muriel Sparkʼs fictional world most conspicuously: creators and criminals. Each category can be both expanded and subdivided. On the one hand, her novels present quite a few novelists ̶ Caroline Rose in The Comforters (1957), Charmian Colston in Memento Mori (1959), Fleur Talbot in Loitering with Intent (1981), and Roland Mahler and Chris Wiley in The Finishing School (2004) ̶ in addition to a variety of other artist figures, such as the poet Nicholas Farringdon in The Girls of Slender Means (1963), the film director Tom Richards in Reality and Dreams (1996), the actress Annabel Christopher in The Public Image (1968), and the teacher Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961). On the other hand, there are crooks and outlaws of all degrees and types, including frauds, particularly of the religious kind, such as Patrick Seton in The Bachelors (1960), Hubert Mallindaine in The Takeover (1976), Hector Bartlett in A Far Cry from Kensington (1988), and Beate Pappenheim in Aiding and Abetting (2000); thieves, ranging from petty voyeurs to bands of diamond smugglers; and both real and potential murderers, who appear in almost all her novels. The inevitable ancillaries of both professions also abound, in the form of editors, critics and “ pisseurs de copie” (to use a phrase from A Far Cry from Kensington, meaning those who “urinate” worthless writing) to hover over the authors, as well as police officers and private detectives to investigate the criminals, and psychiatrists and psychologists to analyze their minds. -

That’s the answer in my books. Born in 1918 in Edinburgh, Muriel Spark originally worked as a secretary and then a poet and literary journalist. She was completely unknown and impoverished until she started her career as a story writer and novelist. Then everything changed overnight. A poet and novelist, she also wrote children’s books, radio plays, a comedy Doctors of Philosophy, (first performed in London in 1962 and published 1963) and biographies of nineteenth-century literary figures, including Mary Shelley and Emily Brontë. For her long career of literary achievement, which began in 1951, when she won a short-story competition in the Observer, Muriel Spark garnered international praise and many awards, which include the David Cohen Prize for Literature, the Ingersoll T.S. Eliot Award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Boccaccio Prize for European Literature, the Gold Pen Award, the first Enlightenment Award and the Italia Prize for dramatic radio.
