ABSTRACT Muriel Spark has received great acclaim from both American and British critics for her wit, humour and use of the macabre. To my knowledge, no c r itic has examined her work wholly for the element of satire found in it. Analysis of her novels shows that she has satir­ ized many segments of society from the young who are s t i l l at school to the near-centenarians. Setting her novels in the period between the wars and Just after the second world war, she has stressed the loss of moral values and has portrayed both the lost young generation who seek substitutes for faith, and the aged who refuse to face the idea of death. Although she treats her subjects in a comic vein her themes are fundamentally serious. Much of her success lie s in the Juxtaposition of the absurd and the fantastic with a realistic view of life. In all her novels she shows her skill as a craftsman, for with crisp dialogue and an economy of words she moves backwards and forwards in time with perfect ease, and her characters are quickly portrayed with deft descriptive phrases. She balances wit with wisdom, and after enjoying the comedy, the reader is left with the feeling that all is not well with the world. i i Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. INTRODUCTION Between 1957 and 1963 Muriel Spark published seven novels, two books of short stories, and one play; she also collaborated with Derek Stanford in a critical study of the life work of Emily Bronte. As poet, critic, and novelist she has won acclaim in Britain and the United States. In view of the widespread interest in her achievement there seems to be good reason to examine certain aspects of her work in order to ascertain the cause for the rapid and favourable recognition of her fic tio n . Muriel Spark was born in Edinburgh in 1918 of a Jewish father and a Protestant mother.*- She spent several years in A frica, returning to England in 1944 to work in the In telligen ce M inistry. With the coming of peace she became a journalist on the staff of the trade magazine Argentor. In 1947 as General-Secretary of the Poetry Society, she interviewed and corresponded with many writers and from close study of their writings she became familiar with contemporary literary trends. Opportunity for a wider sphere of activity induced her to work with a publisher's publicity agent until she became associated with Derek Stanford as editor and publisher of the Forum. They collaborated also in a number of biographical and critical studies until 1956. When Mrs. Spark entered the Catholic Church in 1954 she retired to the country to write her first novel, The Comforters (1957). Each novel has had immediate success and she won first prize in The Observer short story competition. One of her stories, "The Black Madonna" appeared in 1963 on the B.B.C. tele v isio n programme. A film 3 version of Memento Mori w ill soon appear in England ; and Doctors of Philosophy was staged in London in the summer of 1963. Mrs. Spark, at present in New York, has two novels ready for the press, The Mandelbaum Gate and The Hot House on the East R iver. In reviewing Mrs. Spark's fictional output the critical consensus notes in particular her unique g ift of comic invention. She is "one of our most entertaining comic n ovelists" ,^ "one of the very best comic writers",'* and "our most ch illin g comic writer since Evelyn Waugh".^ Some critics have referred to her style and subject matter: Always unpredictable in her subject matter, she is , for the most part, altogether predictable in her ability to captivate, to entertain and to impart that additional quality which -j raises her at least a Btep above so many of her contemporaries. 2 In Voices at Play (London, 1961). 3 See The Sunday Herald Tribune. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. v ii The critics alert us also to her "creative power, dialogue, tart humour, and an odd conglomeration of characters,"® and to her "deadly ear for the banalities of daily chatter and a tender sense of human hesi- 9 tancy". One of Mrs. Spark's compatriots notes that she enjoys evident advantages: "wit, a capacity to communicate human oddity and so litu d e ."10 An American c r it ic , alluding to her powers of construction, and imaginative insight remarks: Her work is distinguished by wit and pungency and alarming sharpness of observation, all controlled by instinct, with a religious (in fact, a Catholic) sensibility. Working with the oddest m aterials, she manages a kind of g risly comedy of doom; with exquisite tact and deftness she d elivers a terrib le judgment upon her emblematic London, her blighted contemporary city. The enabling emotion is loathing, and the atmosphere evoked is close, oppressive, suffocating. 11- In this chorus of acclaim, a dissonant voice is occasionally heard. In assessing her work Frederick R. Karl says, Miss Spark's novels are a sport, light to the point of froth. She can w rite about murder, betrayal, deception, and adultery as thought these were the norms of a crazy- quilt society.12 In a review of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie a writer states that: 8 Anon., in a review of The Comforters. This is because both principles can guarantee the dignity and equality of sovereign states when resolving issues in international relation. Not every statement of persona non grata has to culminate in expulsion because a statement may be issued by the receiving state both after the diplomatic agent has started performing his functions and even before he arrives at the receiving state. If such a statement is followed by the expulsion of the diplomat, it should be based on article 41 of the Vienna Convention, 1961 (infringement on laws of receiving state and/or espionage actions). Also, expulsion may occur due to war and severance of diplomatic relation between two states. Indonesia has had to deal with issues of persona non grata on several occasions both as receiving and sending state. This paper analyses several cases of declaration of persona non grata involving several countries, especially Indonesia in order to give a better understanding of how the declaration of persona non grata plays out between states, and the significance of the Vienna Convention of 1961 on diplomatic relations.

    Page !1 of !26 Gaenor Burchett-Vass March 2014 Repetition and narrative time in Muriel Spark’s ‘The Bachelors’, ‘The Ballad of Peckham Rye’ and ‘A Member of the Family’ ‘Story time’ is not the same thing as ‘narrative time’. The Russian Formalists, active during the early years of the twentieth century, used the terms ‘fabula’ and ‘sjuzhet’ to refer respectively to the ‘chronological sequence of events’ and the ‘order and manner in which [these events] are actually presented in the narrative’ (Jefferson and Robey, 1986: 39). Scenes which occur once in story time, the fabula, can be repeated many times in the narrative, or the sjuzhet, and any such scene will be brought into prominence, or foregrounded, thereby inviting the reader to assign significance to it. Genette’s work on ‘frequency’ in the second half of the twentieth century is built on the foundations established by the Formalists. In his Narrative Discourse, first published in French as Figures III in 1972, Genette distinguishes three possible methods available to the writer for recounting events: the singulative, repetitive and iterative. More recent work among narratologists has pinpointed the difficulties inherent in the fabula/sjuzhet distinction, briefly summarised as follows. The fabula is essentially a construct, put together by the reader at the time of reading and revised to create a final version once the text has been read. It has no external existence unless the fabula and sjuzhet can be seen to be absolutely identical. A ‘primary’ narrative must be identified to enable the construction of a fabula: this is not always straightforward and disagreements cannot easily be resolved.

Robert Hosmer’s introduction – gleeful, gossipy, gushing – sets the tone for this compelling collection of intimate encounters with the late Dame Muriel Spark by connoisseurs of her poetic art. The editor has assembled a veritable Brodie Set who can scarce contain their enthusiasm for their prime subject. Hosmer is clear about the book’s aims, hoping “readers of this volume will gain a keen sense of Muriel Spark as a person, derived in good measure from reading her own words, unfiltered and uncensored, and a considerable critical appreciation of her work as articulated by some of her best readers”. Of the sixteen essays gathered here, seven are previously published, so I will pass over the elegant insights of my colleague Gerry Carruthers, as well as those of Frank Kermode, John Lanchester, Doris Lessing, John Mortimer, and John Updike, and the fascinating interview Hosmer conducted with Spark in 2005. Abstract: Muriel Spark’s The Ballad of Peckham Rye (1960) ruptures time and blurs the boundary between reality and illusion. The story of lower-class life in an industrial suburb south of London is undercharged by the ‘balladic’ demonic villain (or hero?), Dougal Douglas. This controversial duality of a Satanic (evil- seductive) character who invokes fantasy into daily life is characteristic of Muriel Spark’s delight in playing the game of fiction and realism, and of her refusal to follow the traditional time scheme of fiction. My argument in this paper will centre on the implication of the boundary between fiction and realism, and on how this implication contributes to the justification of a villain as a demonic hero. If there exists only one question, it might be: who are the villains who are making chaotic rumors?     Studia Litteraria Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis 6 (2011) DOI: 10.4467/20843933ST.11.005.0303 BOŻENA KUCAŁA Instytut Filologii Angielskiej Uniwersytet Jagielloński The Natural and the Supernatural in Muriel Spark’s Fiction Abstract A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fi ction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is mani- fested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fi ction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fi ction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fi ction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fi ction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience.

ABSTRACT This thesis presents a theory of the self as produced through processes of recognition that unfold and are conditioned by public, political spaces. My account stresses the dynamic and continuous processes of identity formation, understanding the self as continually composed through intersubjective processes of recognition that unfold within and are conditioned by the public spaces wherein subjects appear before one another. My theory of the self informs a critique of contemporary identity politics, understanding the justice sought by such politics as hampered by identity enclosure. In contrast to my understanding of the self, the self of identity enclosure is understood as a series of connecting, philosophical pathologies that replicate conditions of oppression through their ontological, epistemological, and phenomenological positions on the self and political space. The politics of enclosure hinge upon a presumptive fixity, understanding the self as abstracted from political spaces of appearance, as a factic entity that is simply given once and for all. Beginning with Hegel's account of identity as recognised, I stress the phenomenological dimensions of recognition, using these to demonstrate how recognition requires a fundamental break from the fixity and rigidity often displayed within the politics of enclosure.
