  • Saddleworth Sketches
This is a reproduction of a library book that was digitized by Google as part of an ongoing effort to preserve the information in books and make it universally accessible. https://books.google.com Saddle worth ^KETCHES. I Saddleworth Sketches JOSEPH BRADBURY. OLDHAM : HIRST & RENNIE. MANCHESTER: JOHN HEYWOOD. LONDON : SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, & Co. PUBLISHERS' PREFACE. ANY of the Sketches composing the present volume appeared in the Oldham Chronicle during the winter months of 1870-1, and, in reprinting them in a more permanent form, no attempt has been made to give them the character of a History of Saddleworth. The original idea of their writer, Mr. Joseph Brad bury, has been adhered to, but, in consequence of his prolonged absence from Oldham, he has not been able to undertake the revision. One of the Sketches has been omitted, the others to some extent con densed, and the whole carefully corrected, so that it is hoped errors in circumstances and dates have been minimised, if not altogether avoided. During the task of revision, interesting material accumulated rapidly, and much has necessarily been omitted in order that the book might not become too bulky. The additions, for which Mr. Bradbury is not responsible, are the paper on "Rush Bearing in the Olden Time," kindly placed at our disposal by G. Shaw, Esq., and the three chapters following the Table of Chronology. The only considerable additions in the other Sketches are the additional facts and speculations in connection with the Green field murder, extending from page 17 to 34, and a few anecdotes respect ing the Rev.

  • Chapter 27: Margaret Street
DRAFT CHAPTER 27 Margaret Street In 1742 the Daily Advertiser ran a notice inviting offers for a collection of shells ‘fit either for the Cabinet, Grotto, Frame, or Flower Work’ to be viewed at a house near Oxford Market at the east end of Margaret Street, ‘a Pedestal in Shell-Work over the door’.1 That may be the first public reference to Margaret Street. By then this street of four blocks, running east out of the south corner of Cavendish Square up to the edge of the Cavendish–Harley estate at Wells Street, was well on its way to completion. It had acquired its name by the time the original estate layout was published by John Prince back in 1719 (see Ill. ##/##). It commemorated the 2nd Earl of Oxford’s four-year-old daughter Lady Margaret Harley, whose marriage to the 2nd Duke of Portland at the Oxford Chapel fifteen years later brought the property into the Cavendish- Bentinck family. Had Prince’s plan been followed, Margaret Street would have been shorter, terminating after just two blocks in a large square, ‘Marybone Place’, intended for a market on the axis of Great Portland Street. But the revised plan of the early 1720s, made or influenced by James Gibbs, reduced the size of what became Oxford Market, leaving Margaret Street free to run on eastwards to the estate border. Development at either end of the street started in the 1720s, more firmly at the western end, beyond Bolsover and Edward Streets. It continued apace throughout the 1730s, so that by the time of the Daily Advertiser notice, head leases had been granted for the whole north side except for the future sites of All Saints Church and Audley House (Nos 9–12).

Their Marcio L.F. Nascimento developments have traced remarkable histories since their first commercial discoveries in the 1940s and 1950s, both the work of Don Stookey. These products and processes have transformed modern life and are two of the most widely reported methods for special glass manufacturing. They provide security, are of high quality mass produc- tion. The U.S., Japan and China have been leaders in PG glass development, the second place going to China in terms of GC research communities. We have observed very significant progress in recent decades with an exponential growth in the number of scientific publications and patents for PGs and GCs due to new publications, author keywords, affiliations and primary characterization techniques.
