Tentative details are as follows1: (A) Promotion of Traditional Arts and Culture: 1. Opening Ceremony (Dates and venues to be confirmed) The 2017 Festival will feature events of different natures, encompassing traditional and innovative ideas, to showcase the unique customs, all-embracing arts forms and old traditions of the Southern District. Local residents and tourists alike will be able to savour the exclusive charm of the district. The Opening Ceremony of the 2017 Festival will include an abundance of arts and cultural activities and splendid performances by local organisations, etc. 2. Hung Shing Festival in Ap Lei Chau (Between end of February and mid-March, Ap Lei Chau) Hung Shing Festival, a major annual event in Ap Lei Chau, falls on the 13th of the second lunar month. The highlight of the festival is the Hung Shing Festival Parade, during which a number of “Fa Pau” (flower-cannon) teams enlivened by dragon and lion dances parade through the area carrying the statues of Hung Shing and other deities. With the participation of all residents, the whole area is filled with festive joy. Starting from Hung Shing Temple Square and heading towards Ap Lei Chau Park along Ap Lei Chau Main Street, the parade carries blessings to the local residents. Cantonese opera stars will be invited to perform “plays for the gods” for five consecutive days to express thanks to 1 The Unveiling Ceremony of the Southern District Literary Trail Landmark “Stray Birds 31” would be incorporated as one of the programmes of the 2017 Festival. the deities for blessings. 3. Cantonese Opera Performances in the Southern District (Mid-March, Ap Lei Chau) Cantonese opera, a kind of traditional Chinese operas, was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The Cantonese opera in Hong Kong has a distinctive local heritage as it has mingled the unique lifestyle and arts of Hong Kong. Majestic bamboo theatres will be erected in different locations in Ap Lei Chau for the performances of fantastic opera excerpts by renowned Cantonese opera artists showcasing traditional Chinese culture. To deepen foreign visitors and the young audience’s understanding of the culture of Cantonese opera and traditional Chinese stories and to enhance their interest in this traditional form of drama, bilingual programme booklets will be provided. This activity will no doubt be equally attractive to opera fans and non-opera fans and this precious heritage will hopefully be preserved and passed on to the next generation. 4. Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races (30 May, Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter) Tuen Ng Festival is not only a traditional Chinese festival, but also a time for staging spectacular sports event. Dragon boat rowing is known to the world as an international sport. The dragon boat races held in the Southern District during Tuen Ng Festival has been a highly popular annual event receiving substantial media attention. Apart from celebrating the traditional festival, this annual event has a special significance for the fishermen, who will pray for favourable weather. The event will also attract the participation of many local organisations and large corporations. The comparable strength of competing teams will add to the excitement of the race. When athletes paddle the ornately carved and brightly decorated dragon boats to battle it out on the water, tens of thousands of enthusiastic spectators cheer in excitement. Both the participants and spectators can also take this opportunity to appreciate the unique fishing port character of Aberdeen. As the dragon boat race will be 2 incorporated as one of the programmes of the 2017 Festival, it is going to be an even more spectacular event that you cannot afford to miss. 5. Guided Tours on Fishermen Culture (Dates to be confirmed, Aberdeen) The fishermen culture of Aberdeen has a long history. The Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market (the Fish Market) in the vicinity of the Aberdeen Promenade is the largest among the seven wholesale fish markets operated by the Fish Marketing Organization. The Fish Market concerned undertakes the provision of facilities and services for wholesale of ice-cold marine fish and live seafood, the supply of clean seawater, as well as the promotion of local fisheries products and industry. Moreover, the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter is the iconic landmark of the Southern District and the hub of fisheries assets. To introduce and promote the rich heritage of fishermen culture of the Southern District and the history of its fishing harbour, the organiser will organise guided tours on fishermen culture, whereby participants will be showed around the Fish Market and be able to learn how to identify various live seafood species, in a bid to enhance their knowledge of the fishermen culture. 6. Fire Dragon Dance for Mid-autumn Festival (4 October, Pok Fu Lam Village, etc.) Being a major celebratory activity for the Mid-autumn Festival in Pok Fu Lam Village, fire dragon dance has a century-old history. On the night of the Mid-autumn Festival, apart from joining the unique ceremony of fire dragon dance by personally placing joss sticks onto the bodies of the dragons as a means of praying for good health, participants can also appreciate the elegant figures of the fire dragons at a close distance as well as witness a marvellous parade of fire dragons dancing on the streets, thereby experiencing an unforgettable festive night. On that night, several fire dragons made of straw will parade through Pok Fu Lam Village. The fire dragons will first pay homage at the Earth God altar and the Li Ling Divine pagoda inside the village to pray for safety and good luck of all villagers. After that, they will dance their way to the Waterfall Bay, where it returns to the sea, thereby completing the traditional ritual 3 named “dragon’s return to the sea”. Community Engagement Programme on Arts Education – Roving Marquee Show cum Workshops (Between end of March and early April, Aberdeen Promenade) The Community Engagement Programme on Arts Education is organised by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation with sponsorship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. This Roving Marquee Show cum Workshop will be staged in three districts of the territory, enabling people from different districts to appreciate and participate in this meaningful project on arts promotion and education. As far as the Hong Kong Island is concerned, the activities will be held at the Aberdeen Promenade, Southern District. It is planned that a marquee in vibrant colours will be erected at the basketball court inside the Promenade in due course. There are plans to invite secondary and primary schools, youth centres and special schools, etc. to pay a visit to the marquee for participating in various experience workshops free of charge, while these workshops will also be open to members of the public and local stakeholders during weekends. The experience workshops will encompass three components, namely “Theatre Education and Story Sharing Session”, “Music Appreciation Workshop” and “Juggling Workshop”, which aim to offer foundation training that integrates physical skills (perseverance, energy and agility) and personal tactile sense (attention, patience and arts appreciation) to participants and the audiences for them to experience for themselves the diversity and abundance of arts. 2. In addition to booth games, the organiser will also invite local schools and arts and cultural organisations to participate in cultural performances in the Carnival, including dances and performances by Chinese and Western orchestras and choirs. It is expected that the cultural performances and booth games will encourage local organisations and schools to participate in celebrations for the National Day and share the festive joy with the local residents. 4. Literary Trail Guided Tours and Cruise Trips (Dates and venues to be confirmed) SDC has started the planning of the “Southern District Literary Trail” since 2010, whereby commemorative landmarks will be established along the way to connect the spots where five literati/scholars, namely XIAO Hong, Eileen CHANG, CAI Yuanpei, XU Dishan and HU Shih, have left their footprints. When strolling along the Literary Trail at leisure, local people and overseas visitors may admire the footprints left by these cultural luminaries in a tribute to their past ties with Hong Kong. The organiser will organise guided tours on the “Southern District Literary Trail” during the 2017 Festival, enabling the public to discover nostalgia for the past through better understanding of the landmarks, historic buildings and declared monuments along the Southern District Literary Trail.
