Ruby Langford Ginibi: Bundjalung Historian, Writer and Educator Patricia Grimshaw School of Historical and Philosophical Studies University of Melbourne, Parkville, VIC. 3010 [email protected] Abstract: The chapter considers the leadership of Ruby Langford Ginibi, whose writings recorded the history of the Bundjalung people of the Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales. She became prominent in national debates on Indigenous issues from the publication in 1988 of her autobiography, Don’t Take Your Love to Town until her death in 2011. Langford Ginibi was an effective voice in the attempt to persuade non-Aboriginal Australians to acknowledge the oppressive character of settler colonialism and its outcome in negative aspects of many Indigenous Australians’ lives in contemporary Australia. Above all, she drove understanding of the precariousness Indigenous peoples’ livelihoods and the social wellbeing of their families when they left impoverished communities to seek waged work in far flung rural and in urban environments. Through her numerous publications, her research, public talks and interviews, Langford Ginibi made a major contribution to Australia that was recognized by numerous prestigious awards and an honorary doctorate. In 2012, a special issue of the Journal of the European Association of Studies on Australia commemorated her achievements. Key words: Aboriginal historians, Aboriginal writers, Indigenous rights, Bundjalung people, human rights, social justice In 1988 a Bundjalung woman, Ruby Langford (later Ruby Langford Ginibi), published her autobiography Don’t Take Your Love to Town to considerable applause, including the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s Award for Literature.1 Encouraged that she had an audience open to the story of the fraught life situations of Indigenous people, Langford Ginibi continued to produce works that informed non-Indigenous Australians about the past experiences of her people until shortly before her death in October 2011. -

Photograph courtesy of Jimmy Sharman Jnr. 48 PROFESSIONAL ABORIGINAL BOXERS IN EASTERN AUSTRALIA 1930-1979* Richard Broome At first glance the money and prestige available to Aborigines through the sport of professional boxing suggest that boxing might have allowed Aborigines to escape the usual subordinate and outcast condition assigned to them by European-dominated Australian society. This paper attempts to examine the truth of this popular conception of boxing. It also seeks to retrieve the Aboriginal experience of the fight game, for of all sports, only football has rivalled the importance of boxing in Aboriginal community and sporting life and Aboriginal folklore. The examination of the Aboriginal experience in the world of boxing should increase our understanding of race relations in Australia. Professional boxing is a distinctive sport because fighters are in the business of inflicting bodily injury for money in potentially tough physical encounters. The professionals are even distinguished from amateur boxers, because the ‘lily-whites’ are protected from injury by rigid rules and very strict refereeing. It is this fact of institutionalized violence which is at the core of the tight-knit nature of this sporting subculture, centred as it is around inner city gymnasiums where the faithful gather to talk their own jargon and watch the hopefuls go through the rituals of shadow boxing, skipping, bag punching and sparring. -

The role of anthropology in the representation and governance of Indigenous life is itself an important subject for anthropological inquiry, considering that Indigenous people of Australia have long been the objects of interest and imagination by outsiders for their cultural formulations of kinship, ritual, art, gender, and politics. These representations—in feature films about them (such as Rabbit-Proof Fence and Australia), New Age Literature (such as Mutant Message Down Under), or museum exhibitions (such as in the Museum of Sydney or the Australian Museum)—are now also in dialogue with Indigenous forms of cultural production, in genres as diverse as film, television, drama, dance, and archiving. The course will explore how Aboriginal people have struggled to reproduce themselves and their traditions on their own terms, asserting their right to forms of cultural autonomy and self-determination. Through the examination of ethnographic texts, historical accounts, films, live performances, and an autobiography, we will consider the ways in which Aboriginalities are being challenged and constructed in contemporary Australia. The course will consist of lectures interspersed with discussions, student presentations, and films/other media; we may also have guest presenters. -
