Rambling in Overdrive: Travelling Through Tasmanian Literature CA Cranston Two years ago I published an anthology of original and published writings about Tasmania titled Along these lines: From Trowenna to Tasmania1 — a mistake it turns out (as far as the title goes) as readers generally assume that Trowenna is some other place, rather than some other time. The idea was to situate various texts about Tasmania into context, so that when traveling the arterial highways of the heart- shaped island one was presented with stories and histories (time) that live on the sides of the road (place). This paper will address the theme of the conference (‘Originally Tasmanian. Creativity and Innovation in the Island State’) with a methodology similar to that ‘driving’ the anthology. It will examine the relationship between context (the origin) and text (the representation), and by implication, the relationship between natural and symbolic worlds. The ramble, which textually refers to the discursive — ideas, like automobiles, that ‘run about’ — will be accommodated, and as such will occasionally disrupt normal expectations of chronology, the historian’s purview. The motivation for the anthology came out of a need to experience at first hand niggling doubts about the textual construction of the island. I was a migrant so (in terms of the conference theme) I’m not ‘Originally Tasmanian’. I was living in a biotic community I knew nothing about and for which I had no language. I was presented with a textual culture I knew little about, and I was hungry for island stories. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 2 Abstract This thesis argues that real-life forgery cases significantly shaped the form of Victorian fiction. Forgeries of bills of exchange, wills, parish registers or other documents were depicted in at least one hundred novels between 1846 and 1879. Many of these portrayals were inspired by celebrated real-life forgery cases. Forgeries are fictions, and Victorian fiction’s representations of forgery were often self- reflexive. Chapter one establishes the historical, legal and literary contexts for forgery in the Victorian period. Chapter two demonstrates how real-life forgers prompted Victorian fiction to explore its ambivalences about various conceptions of realist representation. Chapter three shows how real-life forgers enabled Victorian fiction to develop the genre of sensationalism. Chapter four investigates how real-life forgers influenced fiction’s questioning of its epistemological status in Victorian culture. -

Just one more? It is a bit like being tempted by chocolate cake or asparagus puffs. We-e-ll, just one more. Just a wee bit. Just a taste. And so here it is. I justified it to myself using much the same argument I use when there’s a little bit of something nice left on a plate. It doesn’t seem worth putting away. Also I had a few little bits and pieces, ideas, things I thought I would like to follow up, still sitting around. Of course this is a specious argument. Give me a few months and I will have collected piles of new things to add to my leftovers. And although I sometimes feel I am wasting time, all those wonderful things I could be doing and am not, I am increasingly inclined to think that, like family history, ‘writers’ calendars’ constantly press out the boundaries of my life and knowledge and imagination. I won’t claim that they make me a better person, there is absolutely no evidence for that, but they make me a more ‘satisfied’ person and in a curious way I think that is valuable. The world is full of dissatisfied people, I don’t mean dissatisfied with the political and social status of a suffering world, but dissatisfied with what they’ve got, they want a bigger share, something different, someone else’s life (all those programs asking people who they would like to be) … but just give me a good book and enough light to read by and I ‘wudn’t call the quane me cousin’. -

Ralph Rashleigh BARRY ARGYLE AMES TUCKER'S novel, Ralph Rashleigh,1 divides into four parts: experience in England, convict life, adventures with J bushrangers, and adventures among aborigines. There is no plot to the novel ; its four parts are held together by the presence of the hero, whose name, Rashleigh, summarises his character in the way that Roderick Random's does in Smollett's novel. Of Smollett's novel, The Oxford Companion lo English Literature says 'much of the story is repulsive'; and the same can be said of Tucker's. This is not its only interest, but it is an important one. The novel deals with a repulsive period in Australia's history ; but unlike Caroline Leakey's The Broad Arrow2 or John Lang's The Convict's Life,3 it deals with that period as though it mattered. The only predictable aspect of Tucker's novel is its form: this is eighteenth century picaresque, its emblem the open road. There are several possible reasons for this old-fashioned air. The first is that early Australia was in much the same condition as England often appeared to the educated metropolitan in the eighteenth century. Beyond the roads and tracks there was little but trees, hills, scrub, and the fear that accompanies the unknown. A further reason for the similarity between eighteenth century novels and Tucker's is Tucker's wish to tell his English readers, even those few who were members of the Port Macquarie Literary Club and Tucker's first audience in 1845, of the variety of Australian conditions. -

Journal of Language and Cultural Education, 2018, 6(2) ISSN 1339-4584 SlovakEdu DOI: 10.2478/jolace-2018-0020 Dark and literary: A tour to the Isle of the Dead Daniel Xerri University of Malta, Malta [email protected] Abstract Sites associated with the dark and literary aspects of tourism can prove beneficial to travellers since they can play an educational role while instigating an emotional and intellectual response. This article illustrates how a tour to the Isle of the Dead at Port Arthur in Tasmania provided the nescient traveller with insights into the literary and historical heritage of the place. The experience also acted as an inner journey in that it challenged the traveller to reassess his engagement with travel destinations. Key words: dark tourism, Henry Savery, literary tourism, Port Arthur, Tasmania. 1 Introduction Ever since very young I have been fascinated by two particular aspects of travel. The first consists of visiting places associated with the books and authors that have played a formative role in my life. In this category I could mention Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s apartment at 5, Kuznechny Pereulok in St Petersburg, or else Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which is the setting for André Malraux’s (1930) La Voie Royale [The Way of the Kings]. The second aspect concerns places linked to death or human tragedy. Examples of these consist of the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan and Hỏa Lò Prison in Hanoi. Whereas the first kind of travel destination is typical of literary tourism, the second type is emblematic of what Lennon and Foley (2000) call dark tourism. -

It was a time when colonisers tried to define the geography of Australia and describe the conditions of living in the penal and settler colony. The birth of the novel in Australia did not occur until the nineteenth century was well underway, even though, soon after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, numerous writings tried to tell of the Australian experience to please a mainly British readership. These everyday descriptions, whether fictional or real, nourished or challenged the fantasies of conquering a new world and of establishing a new colony. The colonial writers wrote for a British readership who were keen to know what could be discovered in the Antipodes. Consequently, the stories gave specific details of the native flora and fauna, the exotic setting of the Australian bush, the living conditions of the convicts and, from the 1850s onwards, the thrilling adventures of the gold-diggers. The picturesque inspired many writers (as it did colonial painters who had come from Europe with an intellectual baggage and an artistic training that eventually proved ineffectual in translating the real Antipodes). -
