Job Description Part-Time Teacher of Physical Education Job Description Part-time Teacher of Physical Education George Watson’s College wishes to appoint a permanent, part-time Teacher of Physical Education (0.5FTE). The post will be available from August 2018 and represents an excellent opportunity for a practitioner with outstanding drive and ability to begin or continue their career in a high profile and supportive setting. In addition we are seeking to appoint a part-time Teacher of Physical Education and Hockey Performance Coach. Applications for both posts together as a full-time role would be considered. THE SCHOOL George Watson’s College is renowned as a large, inclusive and vibrant co-educational school offering all-through education for children from 3-18. Despite its size, everyone remarks that it has a small- school ‘feel’: the close-knit and friendly relationships amongst all its constituents are a hallmark of the School. Its motto – ex corde caritas (Love from the Heart) – is central to its values as it seeks to sustain what is described as ‘The Watson’s Family’. This tangible sense of togetherness is significantly enhanced by everyone being on one purpose-built site, which is located in the attractive residential district of Morningside, to the South West of the centre of Edinburgh. Edinburgh itself is the second strongest city economy in the UK, outside of London, with the highest percentage of graduates and professionally qualified adults in the UK and over 25% of school age children attending fee-paying schools. Watson’s is proud of its independent status and, whilst remaining true to its Scottish roots, seeks to sustain and develop an international perspective. The curriculum is adapting to the innovations inherent in Scotland’s new Curriculum for Excellence and the new Scottish National Qualifications. In addition, the School offers its older pupils the opportunity to take the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. Watson’s is the only school to offer this alternative alongside Scottish qualifications. The School welcomes a wide range of academic ability, and has very high academic standards, with 90% of pupils going on to Higher Education and a large proportion of pupils achieving outstanding success. Watson’s also has excellent facilities, and offers a huge range of courses as well as extra- curricular activities. In addition, it has particular strengths in Sport, Music, Drama, Outdoor Education, Technology and in Support for Learning. The School is very well resourced with a campus-wide IT network. The current Principal, Mr Melvyn Roffe took up his post in August 2014. He is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC). The Senior School Approximately two-thirds of pupils in the Senior School have progressed there from the Junior School. On arrival, they have a carefully worked out induction programme which includes a residential experience together in the first term. 1 In First and Second Year, a diverse and stimulating timetable balances challenging academic progression with a variety of learning experiences. Pupils study many of their subjects in their form classes but are set in English and Mathematics. This enables them to progress at a pace that provides the appropriate level of challenge and provides them with an opportunity to mix with the rest of their year group. From Second Year, pupils discuss their personal targets and study options with teachers, through to their key certificate examinations, and we ensure that they choose subjects and levels that match their abilities and aspirations. At Watson's we are proud of the exceptionally broad range of certificate courses we offer. Available at various levels of certification within the national qualifications framework, our extensive provision includes subjects across the spectrum of arts, sciences and social sciences, with a notably wide selection of languages, including Mandarin Chinese. We are pleased to be the only School in the world to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme alongside Scottish qualifications. It is important that we prepare pupils for the increased independence they will require after school. A programme of study skills encourages independent thought and enquiry. Throughout their time at Watson's, pupils make confident use of our outstanding IT facilities and our Library. Department details Physical Education and Sport at George Watson’s College George Watson’s College is one of the leading independent schools for sport in the UK. Based in the Centre for Sport, the Department comprises 16 teachers and 1 support staff. The Centre for Sport itself provides state of the art fitness equipment along with a swimming pool and a suite of sports halls and gymnasium spaces. Outside there are two all-weather playing surfaces and a range of onsite grass pitches including the famous Myreside pitch with its grandstand which is also used by the Watsonian (Rugby) Football Club and Edinburgh Rugby. Three pavilions complete the outstanding sporting facilities available at the School. Pupils have access to specialist PE teaching from the age of 3 (Nursery) and PE remains a part of the core curriculum offer for all pupils through to Senior 5. Pupils are prepared for Scottish Qualifications (National 4/5s, Highers Advanced Highers and IB Sport and Exercise Science) teaching for the International Baccalaureate Sport, Exercise and Health Science programme will commence at the start of the 2015/16 Session. Extra-curricular sport is a central part of the life at George Watson’s College. Pupils participate in a wide range of sports at all levels from the social to the elite. The School’s main competitive sports are athletics, cricket, hockey, rowing, rugby and tennis but many other opportunities are also afforded to pupils, for example in angling, curling, football, netball and swimming. The ethos throughout the School is one of participation and inclusion where excellence is achieved as a result of mass participation rather than despite it. Sport at George Watson’s College draws on a strong heritage that is reflected in the success of former pupils such as Gavin and Scott Hastings and Sir Chris Hoy. More recently, current and former pupils and 2 staff were a significant component of Team Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Craig Hamilton (Class of 2009) won a silver medal in 4 x 200m Swimming freestyle relay; Harry Leitch (Class of 2003) reached the bronze medal play-off in the Squash men’s doubles; Athlete Jayne Nisbet (Class of 2006) qualified for the high jump final ending up in tenth position; Sarah Jones (Class of 2001) reached the bronze medal play-off in the Wrestling (69kg); and Patrick Dawson (Class of 2006) reached the bronze medal contests in Judo (73kg). Former pupil James Heatly was ninth in the 1m competition and eighth in the 3m competition. Stuart McInally (class of 2008) plays Rugby for Edinburgh and Scotland. Although many of us have become more accustomed to online meetings, this is not something that has been considered previously within our Constitution. It has not been ruled out, but neither has it been ruled in. In the continuing uncertainty of these times, we have concluded that this format offers the best option, at present, to ensure the safety of our members; to remain in step with possible government guidance on gatherings; and to guarantee - as far as is possible - that the AGM may be held at all, in order to conduct the business that we are required to within our governance, and to allow presentation of the Annual Report to take place.
