Notes on the Wilkinson Family of Limerick City and County by Noel Murphy 1 Notes on the Wilkinson family of Limerick City and County by Noel Murphy. Dr Thomas Arthur’s Fee Book. 1624. This Fee Book records that a Mrs Wilkinson of Limerick paid Doctor Arthur for the treatment of her friend in 1624. The Civil Survey of County Limerick. 1654/6. Page xlv tells us that “Captn Robertt Willkinson” was one of the Jurors of Inquisition for the City of Limerick. (City and Liberties). See page 399 and turn to page 457 where his name is given, more correctly, as Captn Robert Wilkinson. Note: ‐ Jurors of Inquisition were appointed from the ranks of old inhabitants who were acquainted with the lands and boundaries of their neighbourhood. This suggests that the Wilkinson family were present in Limerick City before the Cromwellian period. On page 510 Captain Robert Wilkinson is Indexed for Internal pages 2 and 12. The page 2 referred to is to be found in the main book at page 400 and tells us that Captain Robert Wilkinson was now occupying a Stone House on the High Street in St John’s Parish, valued at £15. (High St. in St. John’s Parish is today, Broad St. plus John’s St.). Page 12 refers only to an adjoining property to Wilkinson’s house held by a different person. God’s other Children: Protestant nonconformists etc. etc. Some Quakers meeting at the house of Captain Robert Wilkinson were all arrested by Henry Ingoldsby, Governor of Limerick in 1656. A History of the rise and progress of the people called Quakers in Ireland. 1653 – 1700. Printed 1751. The account states that Capt. Robert Wilkinson was a Preacher in Limerick but not a Quaker and some newly arrived Quakers went to hear him. One of them disagreed with what he was saying and in a strong voice said “Serpent be silent”. That seemed to end Robert’s preaching days and the book notes that at the end of his days he became foolish. Census of Ireland, 1659. By Seamus Pender. This list gives, Robert Wilkinson as living at Caherelly And Thomas Wilkinson as living at Castleconnell. Poll Tax Collectors for County Limerick. 1661. Captain Robert Wilkinson was one of forty Poll Tax collectors for Co. Limerick. The Cromwellian Settlement of the County of Limerick. By James Grene Barry. Part 5. In Abbeyowney Parish. Granted to Robert Wilkinson 240 acres in the Townlands of Moogher and Gortanakitty plus 77 acres of mountain land in the same. Sale of Houses. 1668. The Earl of Roscommon and the Earl of Orrery sold two houses in Irishtown, Limerick, to Sir Ralph Wilson. One of the houses was a double sized Cagework occupied by Captain Robert Wilkinson and four other men. It was near Mungret Lane or Street. This Street marks the junction of Broad Street and John’s Street. Familysearch. 1698. Married at St. John’s, Limerick, Robert Wilkinson to Cassandra Topping on the 25/05/1698. 2 Whelpy’s Abstracts of Irish Chancery Bills 1601 – 1801. No. 123. Thomas Ievers v. Jephson Busteed, Robert Palmer and Elizabeth his wife, Thomas Wilkinson Senior and Junior. 18 Jan. 1717. Supplt. in 1714, purchased lands from the Wilkinsons on which Palmer had a claim. (Ievers starts with a Capital i) Registry of Deeds Index Project Nick Reddan Memorial 5875 Dated 01/11/1714 It would appear that the lands of Madibye (Maddyboy) had been granted to a Robert Wilkinson, now deceased, by Letters Patent. These lands were now being transferred to Robert’s son Thomas Wilkinson senior of Caheroly (Cahirelly) who had a son and heir, Thomas Wilkinson junior. Living in Limerick, 1715. Robert Wilkinson, Sheriff of Limerick City in 1701 was still alive in 1715. See below. He was still alive in 1745 but was dead by 1754 when his widow was collecting his pension. Registry of Deeds Index Project. Nick Reddan Memorial 62287 Dated 23/07/1737 This Records the lease by George Wilkinson of Limerick City and his wife Margaret Twigg, the daughter of Alderman Robert Twigg of property in Limerick to a third party. The Hoare Estate maps of Limerick City, 1747. Map No 20 shows 2 houses fronting on to High St. and directly opposite Castle St. with 2 more houses behind fronting on to Flag Lane. These 4 houses were leased to Robert Twigg in 1700 and then in 1724, after Robert Twigg died, they were leased by Elizabeth Hoare to Twigg’s daughter Margaret. Margaret married George Wilkinson of Limerick City in 1720, Recte 1730, and the lease was renewed to the widow Margaret Wilkinson in 1747. (This may be the Margaret who died in 1775. See under 1775 below. Burke claims that Alderman Twigg died in 1727 and that Margaret was born in 1693 and married George Wilkinson of Ballyvalley, Co. Clare in 1720. Familysearch gives their marriage date as 29/11/1730). George Wilkinson and his wife leased lands of the deceased Robert Twigg to Joseph Sexton on the 23/07/1737. (A John Wilkinson of Ballyvalley was a witness to a deed on the 08/10/1709). Familysearch George Wilkinson and his wife Margaret Twigg had the following children baptised in St Mary’s Cathedral. Elizabeth on the 28/10/1731, Robert on the 02/06/1733, Mary on the 09/05/1734 and George on the 21/05/1736. Limerick Wills. William Wilkinson, Gent. of Limerick Probate 1724. Elizabeth Wilkinson, Widow, Limerick Probate 1751. In 1726 A Thomas Wilkinson of Limerick City held a lease for land in Clanwilliam Barony. His son and heir was Henry Wilkinson. Thomas Wilkinson Junior was alive on the 29/05/1738. 3 Limerick Archives. Corporation Account Books. 1744 – 1745. Alderman Robert Wilkinson received £12 from the Corporation covering payment due from 29/09/1744 to 29/09/1745. He received two further payments that year, one for £1‐7‐3 and the second for £2‐6‐7 ½. (Robert Wilkinson was Sheriff of Limerick City in 1701 but never served as Mayor so he must have been elected Alderman for holding some other high ranking office. The Recorder of the City was often elected an Alderman). A James Wilkinson received two payments in this period of £2 each time. 1754 – 1755 A Mrs Wilkinson received two payments of £4. (These were two half‐yearly payments of her Aldermans widow’s pension. She can only be the widow of Alderman Robert Wilkinson). 1755 ‐1756. Mrs Wilkinson received the same payments this year also. A third payment reads Mrs Wilkinson, ‐‐‐‐‐Mrs Barbara Parker………….£2. (I would read this as Mrs Parker receiving 3 months pension, Oct. Nov. and Dec. due on the death of Mrs Wilkinson in December 1756, Mrs Barbara Parker being a next of Kin to Mrs Wilkinson). (See “Merry Widows of Limerick City, 1777 to 1801” in The Old Limerick Journal, Number 44, Winter 2010). Rosemary ffolliott’s newspaper abstracts. 1750 – 1820. Limerick Local Studies. William Wilkinson = Mrs Jacoba Sussana Bowchier Cahirelly Kilcullane. B. B. M. 03/07/1763 D. D. Faulkner’s Dublin Journal. Saturday 10/03/1764. Married in Limerick, Cornelius Holmes to Miss Margaret Wilkinson, daughter of Thomas Wilkinson of Cahirelly, Co. Limerick. (Was this Thomas Senior or Junior?). 4 Index of Freeholders for Limerick City and County. 1760, 1768 and 1776. Francis Wilkinson was not listed in the 1760 list of voters but did appear in the 1768 and 1776 lists which stated that his Freeholding was at Cahirelly and that he also lived at Cahirelly. To be a Freeholder and a Voter he would have to be an adult, i.e. over 21 years of age in 1768. George Wilkinson of Castleconnell was listed in 1760 and 1768 but is not mentioned in the 1776 list as he died in 1773 as given in next entry. William Wilkinson who was a Freeholder with land in Cahirelly but who lived in Limerick City is listed in 1768 and 1776. Probably the husband of Jacoba Susanna Bowchier above. The 1761 List of Voters by Nick Reddan. Thomas Wilkinson living at Cahirelly with his Freehold also in Cahirelly George Wilkinson living at Castleconnell. His Freehold was at Bohergar. The Gentleman’s and London Magazine. 1741 – 1794 Died at Limerick, Thomas Wilkinson. Reported on the 23/12/1769. Dublin Hibernian Journal. Monday 12/04/1773. Died at Castleconnell, Co. Limerick, George Wilkinson. (Not the husband of Margaret Twigg). Dublin Hibernian Journal. Friday 07/07/1775. Died at Limerick in an advanced age, Mrs Margaret Wilkinson widow of George Wilkinson. (Is this Margaret Twigg?) Dublin Hibernian Journal. Wednesday 10/01/1781. Married, Samuel Andrews of Ranelagh Road to Miss Maria Bell Wilkinson, daughter of the late George Wilkinson of Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. Walkers Hibernian Magazine. October 1786 Married at Kilpeacon church, William Gabbett junior of Mount Mimet to Miss Mary Wilkinson of Cahirelly. Kings County Chronicle. 20/11/1857. (James Tandy Wilkinson married Catherine Lackey in 1789. He was born circa 1767 so was about 22 years of age when he married). One of his sons was Henry Purdon Wilkinson who was born circa 1800.
