REPORT OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL Session 1967-68
The GeI)eral Council announces that the number of -Fellows is now 751. a ilet increase"f 11 during the year. This number represents those. wbpse subscriptions have been paid and it wilI,prol>i'bly be substan· tially increased when the list of Fellows in 'the new SectiO!l. of Psychiatry is complete. The number of mem~rs is 34 and the number of honorary Fellows is 8. A notable eveni in the -history of th<: Academy was the decision to add a fourteenth section to be named the Section of Psyohia1ry. The Graves Lecture under the auspices of the Academy and the Medical Researoh Council of Ireland was delivered on 3rd May 1968. The lecturer was Or. Noel Peter Gerard Clairke of the sChool of Pathology. University College. Dublin. His subject was Mechanisms of Thrombosis. The attendance !!lumbered 121. I \ Se,ction of Surgery. :Six meetings were held. On 24th November 1967 Dr. Tom Stamey of Stanford J]niversity, U.S.A., read a paper on !!he Diagnosis and Trea,lment of Reno-Vascular Hypertension. On 7th December 1967 -Mr.·H. Browne and· Mr. T. Noonan compared The Operative versus Conservative Treatment of Perforated Peptic Ulcer. This was followed by a discussion on Enucleation versus Transurethral Prostatectomy iii which the following. took part : -Mr. Dufi, Mr. O'F1ynn, Mr. Corcoran and Mr. Walsh.. The third meeting was held in SI. Vincent's Hospital on 5th January, 1968, at which fourteen cases were shown and dis cussed. On 16th February, 1968, Mr. R. Guy Pulver.taft of Derby addressed the section on the subject of Fundamentals in the Care of the Injured Hand and on 19th April. 1968 Mr. M. V. Sheehan-delivered his Presidential address, his subject being Road Traffic Accidents. The final meeting on 24th ~ay, 1968, was held in conjunction with the Society of Gastro-enterology wherr the following subjects were dealt with: Crohn's Disease of the Duodenum (professor Collins) ; Parathyroid Adenoma (Mr. F. X. O'Connell); Coarctation of Ab dominal Aorta. post-operative (Mr. Mehigan and Mr. Brady); Cush ing's Syndroma (Mr. H. Browne); Allo Vin Graft (professor MacGowan); Case of Intestinal Obstruction (Mr. Coolican); Gross Lower Limb Deformity (Mr. Brady and Mr. Regan); Spontaneous Perforation of the Colon (Mr. Lavelle) and Renal Vein Thrombosis in Siblings (Mr. B. O'Donnell and Mr. E. Guiney).

Oxytocin as an Adjunct to Surgical Induction of Labour; [)r. Gallagher (Dublin) Unstable Lie; Dr. J. Stanley (Dublin) Three Years' Experience of Incompetent Cervix; Dr. D. Smith C!lel(ast) Follow-up of Cervical Screening; Dr. A. R;chardson (Dublin); Transverse. Lie; fDr. A. Greene (Dublin) Anie-pimum 1(enous Thrombosis. - On 1st December, 1967, the section considered the annual reports of the three Dublin Maternity Hospitals, the visiting speaker being PIOfessor Geoffrey Dixon (Bristol). On 12th January, 1968, the matter discussed was Hospital Planning with particular reference to Mater nity Hospitals. The speakers were Dr. M. Ffrench-O'Carroll and Mr. T. P. Kennedy (Architect) and the subsequent discussion was led· by Dr. O'Driscoll (National Maternity Hospital) and Dr. W. Gavin (Coombe Hospital). On 23rd February, 1968, the subject was Recent Advances in the Preparation of Haemolytic Disease. The 'pril!cipaJ speaker was Dr. R. B. McConnell (Livepool) iUld the discussi!ln was introduced by Dr. Robert Carroll and Dr. D. Mellon. On 22nd Ma:rch, 1968, Cl~rrent Views on Genital Tract Carcinoma were con tributed by the following: Professor de Valera (Surgical treatment of Carcinoma of the Vulva); Dr. FinbaIlf Cross '(Radiotherapy "in Genital Tract Carcinoma)-; D~. J. J. Fennelly (Che1ilOtherapy in Overian, Uterine and Trophoblastic Malignancy); Dr. DOuglas Thornes (Fibrinolysis in the Management of Carcinoma). Th.,. final meeting was beld in Limerick. The following were the speakers: Dr. I. Holloway (Obstetrics in Limerick) ; Dr. John Leahy (Cardio myopathics in Pregnancy); :Qr. M. Curtin (Multiple Pregnancy/; and -Dr. D. O'Sullivan (Vaginal Hysterectomy with film).
Section of Pathology. Six meetings were held. On 6th Oc\ober, 1967, Dr, EUen. Moor house reported on A Hospital Study of Transferable Drug ~esis tance. This was followed, by a case report on Congeniial Toxo plasmosis by Professor 0, J. Holland and Dr. M, Harle Barry. On 17th November, 1967, there was a discussion on the subject of Electrophoretic a~d Immunodiffusion Techniques and their Value as a Diagnostic Aid to the Clinician, introduced by Dr. John Kohn of SI. Mary's Hospital, London. On 13th December, 1967. the agenda included papefB in Bacteriuria in Pregnancy (Dr. Robj:rt Carroll) and the Histological Features of Hepaloblastoma (Dr. c. T., Doyle), On 19th 'January. 196)l, the Sectiolj heard two papers. Dr. T, Healy dealt with Cellular -Reaction in .Gancer under two Ceads. "Pushing Carcinoma" of Ihe slomach in. Man Imd &/ila!!,ous Carcinqma in the hamster cheekpouch, This was followed by a paper on Myelosclerosis in a mongol infanl presenting Os Leukaemia 'by Dr. F. Hillman (Wigan). On 1st March, 1968. Dr. J. Dempsey deliv~Od J.1~ presiden tial Address. his subject being Gasrrilis, a Hisiol(JgU:ll( Study pf _600 Biopsies and a review of some possible conseqyeQce.\;. President of the Civil Pilots Medical 'Board read a paper on Fitness for Flying. On 6th ·December. 1967. Professor Ivor Browne spoke on The Place of Com munity Medicine in a Regional Health Service. O~ 17th JailUary. 1968. the subject discussed was Domiciliary Obstetrics; including a PersontiI Series of 1.500 Cases by a General Practitioner {Dr. James Barnes). On 9th Febnlary. 1968. Dr. J. P. Corridan (Cork) reaa a paper on Trichinosis in Cork.. On 27th March. 1968 the 'President {Dr. Geoffrey BourkeLspoko on Af:curacy 01 Death Certification. On 8th May. 1968 the County Medical ·Officer. Offaly (Dr. Anthony Reeves) read a paper on · th~ subject of. Chronic Disease-a Challenge.
Section of Odontology. Five meetings were held: On 11th October. 1967. Mr. Liarn Conway reported on Dentistry for Children in the United States. On 8th November. 1967. Dr. Noel Clarke read a paper on Recent Advances in Mechanisms of Haemostasis and Fibrinolysis at Vascular Level. On 13th December. 1967. Dr. Forgal Nally spoke on Myeloma like Plasma-Cell Lesion of the Maxilla. On 10th January 1968 a paper by ,Mr. Walter Allwright was entitled Preventive Dentistry-not so much a Programme as a way of life. A clinical meeting was held in Belfast School of Dentistry on 16th March. 1968.
Section of Laryngology and Otology. The first of four meetings was held in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital where clinical cases were .hown. On 5th January. there wore two papers-one on The Management of Tracheostomy by Dr. R. Davys '\lid the other on the Anaesthetist and the Otolaryngologist together. This was a joint meeting with the Section of Anaesthetics. On 26th January. 196,. Mr. R. R. Woods gave an account of 300 Stapedectomies and at the last meeting on 18th May. 1968 Dr. Francis J. Bonner lectured On Electromyographic Observations in the Human lArynx.
Section of Andesthetics. Three meetings were held: At the meeting on 3rd October. 1968 , the speaker was Professor J. F. CruJ of Nijmegen and the subject of his address was Metabolic Acidosis and Muscle Relaxants. The second meeting was held on 22nd. November. 1967 when the subject was I -Clinical Uses of Isoprenaline. The speakers were Professor P. Cannon. Dr. W. S. Wren. Dr. T. Chapman and Dr. Sean Blake. Tlie third meeting was held jointly with the Section of Laryngology and Otology on 5th January. 1968 (q.v.). The meeting on 6th March. 1968. was devoted to the subject of I Panquonium Bromide and the speakers were Dr. W. R. Buckett (Orgimon Laborato~ies) who dealt with hs Pharmacology and pro W. L. M. Section of Biological Scienc~s. Four meetings were held. On I3tb October 1967 .there wef~ five , This ~ communications. was followed on 15th December, 1961 by I six short papers and on 8th March, 1968 'by a similar number. The final moeting was held on 1st July and 2nd, July, 1968 in Gl!l~ay during wbich ,time sixteen papers were .read. Detajls of the activities of this section are publisbed in tbe Transactions of the Academy in tbe 10umal. .
Section of Paediatrics. At the first of four meetings on 3rd NoveI1lber, 1968; Dr. 1. P.·R. Rees delivered bis Presidential address ·on the subject of Paediatric Societies. The subseqnent speakers were Dr. R. q. BarrY (president, Irisb Paediatric Association), Dr. Joan -LogllJ1. (p~i4ent, Ulster Paediatric Association), Professor R. E. ISteen (prt;.sident, British Paediatric Association). On 15th December, 1967, four Francis Joseph. Dunkin died on 21st April, 1967 and Iris death was not previously noted in this Rellor!. He qualified in Medicine in'the National University in 1949. He was Professor of Oral Surgery in the DenciJ. Hospital, \;lublin and became a Fellow of the Academy in 1951.
)!:dward'(Jeddis Redman died on' 10th November, 1967. He was qualified in Dublin Universiiy in 1944. 'D.M.R in 1948 and F.F.R. in 1953. He 'was radiologist on the staff of Mereer's Hospital and con tributed a number of papers to the Journals in his specialty. He became a Fellow of the Academy in 1958.
David Smith Torrens died on 24th November, 1967, at the age of 70: He qualified in Medicine in Dubliil University in 1922. After a period as a Demonstrator in I1hysiology' he was appointed Professor in 1936 and held that post for the record'period "Of 31 years. He was also elected King's' ProfessOr of the Institutes'of Medicine:His leanmg was towards teaching rather than research 'and he liad a ' lifelong interest in horolOgy, becoming an honorary freeman of the 'Worship' ful Company of Clockmakers. He was a Fellow of thd Academy since 1935.
,Robert Thompson, a Fellow sincd930 died on 8th December, 1967, at Pinner, Middlesex. He qualified with honours at Belfast in 1922 and specialised in Mental and Nervous Diseases.
Cornelius Dermot O'Connell died on 7th bnua'ry, 1968. at the age of 55. He qualified in the National University.in 1936, L.A.H. in 1952 and obtained the M.Ch. in the previous year. He ~pecialised in the Ear, Nose and Throat and held many appointments, including OOIIsultant Report of the General Council, Session 1967-68 7 to the Dublin Health Authority, Mercer,'s Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hosp..ital, Adelaide Road. He became a Fellow of the Academy in 1950.
Patrick Joseph Theodore O'Farrell died in London on 7th June, 1968. He obtained the conjoint qualification in 1910. He beciune a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Irelan4 in 1933 havigg already obtained the D.T.M. (Liverpool) and the D.P.H., !,{,U.1. He was honorary L.L.D. of both Dublin and Wales. He also had the unusual honour of holding the Presidency of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and the British Medical Association. During his active life he was PhysiCian to St. Vincent's HospitaL He had been a Fellow of the Academy from 1926 until the time of his retirement.
William Charles Kidney died on 30th May, 1968. He qualified in the National University .in 193,9 _a.nd proceeded to D.P.H. (N.D.!.) D.C.H. (1943) and M.D. (1945). He was Director of Paediatrics, Coombe Hospital and visiting Physician to Our Lady's H9SPital, Crumlin. In addition he was past President of the Irish Paediatric Socie~ and the Paediatril' Syclion. -of the Acad~niy of 'Ypil'h he became a Fellow in,1944.
Francis Joseph Morrin died on 11th July, 191,)8. He was qualified in 19~5 from University College, Du!>lin. He entered the RA.M.C. and served with distinction in France and on hospital ships in. the Mediterranean for which service he received the honour of OhevaIier, Legion d'Honnour following which he acted for some years as Director of Medical Services in the Army of the .Irish Free State. M.Ch, in 1926 he became Surgeon to Jervis Slt'eet Hospital and later St. Vincent's HospitaL He was also consulting Surgeon ~o SI. Anne's Hospital and the CQombe HospitaL He was a Fellow of the Academy for forty-three years.
