Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland may be admitted without formal proposal oQ payment of the entrance fee and the subscription for the cu?r~nt year. All others, being registered medical practitioners, or those interested in the science of medicine shall be proposed by two Fellows before election. Any registered Medical Practitioner may be elected a MEMBER, the election to be conducted in the same manner as that of Fellows. Registered Medical Practitioners temporarily resident in Dublin, may be elected as Associates. Registered Medical Students may be elected as Student Associates. ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS-Fellows shall pay £3. 3s. Od. and Members £2. 2s. Od. Associates and Student AssoCiates shall pay five shillings. Fellows and Members not residing within 15 miles of Dublin shall pay £1. lis. 6d. Subscriptions shall become due on the first day of October in each year. A Fellow or Member whose subscription is morc than onc year in arrear shall cease to belong to the Academy unless the delay shall be accounted for to the satisfaction of the General Council. An entrance fee of £1. Is. Od. is charged to Fellows. Visitors must be personally introduced by, a Fellow or Member. The ORDINARY MEETINGS will be held on Wednesday and Friday evenings, from October until Junc, with special exceptions. This number represents those whose subscriptions have been paid. Ten years ago the number of Fellows was 540. The number of Members is 49 and the number of Honorary Fellows is 9. The Grayes Lecture under the auspices of the Academy and the Medical Research Council of Ireland was delivered on April 18th.

    1 Notes on the Wilkinson family of Limerick City and County by Noel Murphy. Dr Thomas Arthur’s Fee Book. 1624. This Fee Book records that a Mrs Wilkinson of Limerick paid Doctor Arthur for the treatment of her friend in 1624. The Civil Survey of County Limerick. 1654/6. Page xlv tells us that “Captn Robertt Willkinson” was one of the Jurors of Inquisition for the City of Limerick. (City and Liberties). See page 399 and turn to page 457 where his name is given, more correctly, as Captn Robert Wilkinson. Note: ‐ Jurors of Inquisition were appointed from the ranks of old inhabitants who were acquainted with the lands and boundaries of their neighbourhood. This suggests that the Wilkinson family were present in Limerick City before the Cromwellian period. On page 510 Captain Robert Wilkinson is Indexed for Internal pages 2 and 12. The page 2 referred to is to be found in the main book at page 400 and tells us that Captain Robert Wilkinson was now occupying a Stone House on the High Street in St John’s Parish, valued at £15. (High St. in St. John’s Parish is today, Broad St. plus John’s St.). Page 12 refers only to an adjoining property to Wilkinson’s house held by a different person. God’s other Children: Protestant nonconformists etc. etc. Some Quakers meeting at the house of Captain Robert Wilkinson were all arrested by Henry Ingoldsby, Governor of Limerick in 1656. He attended Belvedere College for his primary and secondary schooling. Accepted by University College Dublin (UCD) for a BA in Modern History & Political Economy, he achieved first place in his undergraduate exams and graduated with First Class Honours in 1943 before being called to the Irish Bar in 1945. Recipient of a UCD postgraduate scholarship, he was awarded a MA in Modern Irish History in 1950 before taking leave from his work as Assistant Lecturer in UCD to attend Peterhouse College, Cambridge University for postgraduate studies, completing a Ph.D. on the subject of Anglo-Irish relations 1841-1850 in 1955. He spent the year 1953-1954 at the University of Marburg in Germany on a German government scholarship. Nowlan was first appointed to the staff of UCD in 1948 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History; further appointments in 1957 saw him promoted to College Lecturer and in 1966, to Associate Professor of Modern Irish History, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1986. In 1974, he had been appointed the first Chairman of the Combined Departments of History.
