Shaw | 2018 ORGANIZATION NOMENCLATURE Dieteria canescens (Pursh) Nutt. until recently Names, subtaxa, chromosome number(s), hybridization. (2010) was known as Machaeranthera canescens (Pursh) A. Gray (ITIS 2017; USDA NRCS 2017). This species belongs to the Astereae tribe of the Asteraceae family (Morgan Range, habitat, plant associations, elevation, soils. 2006) and will hereafter be referred to by its common name, hoary tansyaster. NRCS Plant Code. MACA2 (USDA NRCS 2017). Life form, morphology, distinguishing characteristics, reproduction. Subtaxa. The Flora of North America (Morgan 2006) recognizes ten varieties of hoary tansyaster: Dieteria canescens var. Growth rate, successional status, disturbance ecology, importance to canescens, ambigua, aristata, glabra, incana, animals/people. leucanthemifolia, nebraskana, sessiliflora, shastensis, and ziegleri. Gray Common Name: Multilobed groundsel Species Code: PAMU11 Ecotype: Intermountain West and Rocky Mountains General Distribution: Western North America Propagation Goal: Seeds Propagation Method: Seed Product Type: Propagules (seeds, cuttings, poles, etc.) Propagule Collection: Wildland collections can be made by hand stripping or shaking ripe seed into collection bags. Seed can be collected slightly early by harvesting the entire inflorescence and allowing the seed to after ripen. Propagule Processing: Unprocessed seed is first sent through a Westrup laboratory brush machine with a number 7 mantle at a speed of 2. The gate is left approximately 1 cm open to allow the brushed seed to fall through to the catch pan below. The brushes dislodge the seed from the heads and remove the pappus. The brushed material is then cleaned using a Westrup LA-LS multi-deck air screen cleaner with a 1.55 top screen, blank middle, and solid bottom screen. The air is set at approximately 1.5 to pick up the removed pappus, unfilled achenes and light inert matter. These methods yield high purities (90- 100%). There are approximately 900,000 seeds/lb. Pre-Planting Treatments: Seed is stored in cool-dry conditions with temperatures of approximately 10° C (50° F) and relative humidity of 20 to 30%. -

Flora of the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory Annotated Catalog of Vascular Plants Updated June 2013 Ann M. Howald This updated catalog for the flora of the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL) includes all vascular plants identified during field studies conducted from 1978 through spring 2013. Taxonomic nomenclature is mainly consistent with The Jepson Manual, Second Edition (Baldwin et al. 2012). The families, genera, and species are arranged alphabetically. The scientific name of each species is followed by a common name of popular usage. No attempt was made to determine all common names that might apply to a given species. Scientific names of native species are in bold type; those of introduced species are in plain type. Annotations for all taxa include: 1) life form (e.g., annual herb, perennial herb, etc.); 2) flower color; and 3) the general abundance and distribution at SNARL. For flowering plants, the approximate flowering period in the eastern Sierra is given. Locations of most landscape features mentioned in the text (e.g., headquarters building, stream control structure 3, etc.) and numbering of the stream control structures, are as shown on current maps of SNARL. The most recent previously applied scientific name is given in brackets. A voucher specimen deposited at a herbarium participating in the Consortium of California Herbaria (CCH) is cited for most taxa. A set of duplicate herbarium specimens is housed at SNARL. Asters of Yesteryear (Updated April 2018) About this Update: The document was originally posted in a shorter version, to accompany the brief article "Where Have all our Asters Gone?" in the Fall 2017 issue of Sego Lily. In that version it consisted simply of photos of a number of plants that had at some time been included in Aster but that no longer are, as per Flora of North America. In this version I have added names to the photos to indicate how they have changed since their original publication: Date and original name as published (Basionym) IF name used in Intermountain Flora (1994) UF name used in A Utah Flora (1983-2016) FNA name used in Flora of North America (2006) I have also added tables to show the renaming of two groups of species in the Astereae tribe as organized in Intermountain Flora. Color coding shows how splitting of the major genera largely follows fault lines already in place No color Renamed Bright Green Conserved Various Natural groupings $ Plant not in Utah It is noteworthy how few species retain the names used in 1994, but also how the renaming often follows patterns already observed. Asters of Yesteryear (Updated April 2018) Here are larger photos (16 inches wide or tall at normal screen resolution of 72 dpi) of the plants shown in Sego Lily of Fall 2017, arranged by date of original publication. None of them (except Aster amellus on this page) are now regarded as true asters – but they all were at one stage in their history. Now all are in different genera, most of them using names that were published over 100 years ago.
