School Nickname “Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. It was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letter- man’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

School Colors Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

All-Region/All-American Players Central Oklahoma has had eight players receive NCAA Division II All-Region recognition a combined 12 times. Taylor Bevis is the only three-time All-Region selection in program history, earning that honor in 2016, ‘17 and 18. Alma Brahimaj (2000-02), Lacie Allen (2006- 07) and Barbara Jackson (2014-15) were each two-time honorees. The Bronchos have had five players earn All-American honors as well. The University of Central Oklahoma Athletics Hall of Fame, founded in 1990, has 136 members, plus three teams. The Broncho volleyball program has produced four UCO hall of famers over the years. Amy Parten was the first volleyball player ever inducted into the hall, going in as part of the Class of 2002. Kristin Vincent followed in the Class of 2008. Two other Broncho greats have entered the hall. Kate O’Neill joined in the Class of 2016 and Alma Brahimaj in the Class of 2017. Here are their Hall of Fame bios:

Amy Parten Amy Parten put UCO volleyball on the Lone Star Conference map from 1989-92, ending her sensational four-year career as the holder of 13 school records and leading the Bronchos to 89 wins. Amy had 410 kills and 328 digs as a freshman to earn honorable mention All-LSC honors, then collected 879 kills and 615 digs the following two season in picking up second-team All-LSC recognition. Parten became UCO’s first-ever first-team All-LSC player as a senior in 1992 with a spectacular season that included what were then single-season school records for kills (624) and digs (548). Parten finished her career with 1,913 kills in 5,098 attacks, both school records then that rank second now, along with 1,491 digs and 70 solo blocked shots.

Kristin Vincent Kristin Vincent was one of the top middle blockers in the Lone Star Conference throughout her career as a four-year starter at UCO from 1990-93. She finished with a league-record 515 assisted blocks, a school-record 177 solo blocks and a .323 career hitting percentage. Vincent came in as a true freshman in 1990 and started all season, then was an honorable mention All-LSC pick in 1991 after col- lecting a single-season school record 164 assisted blocks while finishing second in the LSC in hitting percentage (.306). A product of Arlington, Texas, Vincent earned honorable mention All-LSC acclaim again in 1992 while finishing second in the con- ference in both total blocks (211) and hitting percentage (.311). Vincent led the league in hitting percentage (.377) and finishing third in blocks (155) while collecting a career-high 313 kills in -pick ing up first-team All-LSC recognition as a senior in 1993.

Kate O’Neill O’Neill was a four-year starter for the Bronchos at middle blocker from 1994-97 and finished her career as one of the finest play- ers in school history. She was named Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year in 1994 after making 345 kills and 116 blocks in helping UCO capture its first-ever conference title and make its initial appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament. O’Neill came back the next season to earn second-team All-LSC honors after collecting 474 kills and 93 blocks with a .312 hitting percentage and then lettered in a reserve role on the UCO basketball team. She had 438 kills, 158 blocks and a .356 hitting percent- age as a first-team All-LSC pick as a junior.
