Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football Assistant Coach: Scott Chenoweth coach C.W. Wantland. Todd Steidley, a for- mer national champion for Central Oklahoma who went on to win sev- en state titles as a high school coach in the state, is in his second year at the helm of the Bron- chos. Steidley had an imme- diate impact during the 2016-17 campaign, lead- ing UCO to the first unde- feated dual season (18-0) in the illustrious history of a program that has captured 15 national championships. 4 2017-18 UCO Wrestling Assistant Coaches Scott Chenoweth

The newest addition to the Central Oklahoma wrestling staff is Scott Chenoweth, a former Division I All-American and highly-successful high school head coach who joined the program in September 2017. Chenoweth was a three-time state champion at Perry High School in addition to winning a Junior National Freestyle national title. He went on to have great suc- cess at the University of Nebraska, finishing as a three-time All-American for the Huskers. Scott returned to his alma mater to take over as head coach in 1995 and led the Maroons to unprecedented success during a 16-year tenure. He guided the Ma- roons to 12 state championships and 11 dual state titles in that span while coach- ing 42 individual state champions. Chenoweth served as USA Junior World Freestyle team coach in 2008 and 2010 and was a National Coach of the Year finalist in 2010. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Service to Wrestling in 2011. Chenoweth left coaching 2011, but continued as an administrator in Perry until 2017. Scott is married (Sage) and has two children (Sebastian and Savannah).

Sam Hazewinkel

Former Division I All-American and Olympian Sam Hazewinkel is in his second year as an assistant coach for the Central Oklahoma wrestling program. Hazewinkel had an immediate impact after coming to UCO for the 2016-17 sea- son, helping lead the Bronchos to the first unbeaten dual season (18-0) in school history and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual champion- ship. Hazewinkel, of the same family inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, brings one of the better resumes and pedigrees in all of wrestling to UCO. National champion, All-American, Olympian -- Hazewinkel has done it all. Same went 140-0 in high school at Pensacola Christian Academy and was a three- time state champion. From there, he went to the University of Oklahoma and was a four-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American. Also a four-time U.S. Open Champion, twice in Freestyle and twice in Greco, Hazewinkel was a 2008 University World Champion in Greco. The same year, he served as alternate for the Olympics and in 2012 was also an Olympian in both Freestyle and Greco. After competing in the Olympics, Hazewinkel joined his father and uncle as Olympians. Sam and his father, Dave, are the only father-son Olympians in American wrestling history. Sam is married (Rachel) and has one son (Josh).

23 2017-18 UCO Wrestling ALL-AMERICANS In 64 seasons of wrestling, Central Oklahoma has had 132 The Bronchos have had at least seven All-Americans 12 times wrestlers win All-America honors a combined 239 times. Ten (1979, '81, '84, '85, '87, '89, '90 '93, '94, '95, '02 and '07) with a wrestlers have been four-time All-Americans, 22 have earned high of eight in 1981, '94, '95 and '07. 25 2017-18 UCO Wrestling National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has long had one of the most successful wrestling programs in the nation, having claimed 15 national championships. UCO won eight titles while members of the NAIA and has taken seven crowns since joining NCAA Division II in 1990. Known for its outstand- ing golf courses, Edmond has hosted some of the most exciting PGA and celebrity events in the past two decades at world-famous Oak Tree Golf Club. Edmond is the fastest growing, most economically dynamic city in Oklahoma. Dr. Don Betz became Central Oklahoma’s 20th president in August 2011, after having previously served as UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005. President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the leading metropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school, and he’s been the driving force in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus. President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years, developing a reputation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through his international activities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations. Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He also served as chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU and as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-99. In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the vice president of university relations and professor of political science. While at NSU, he also was the executive director of the educational foundation, assistant to the president, dean of continuing education and special programs, director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program. From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired the Inter- national Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO) network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions. A frequent writer and speaker, President Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with -news papers, radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to more than 80 countries. While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, board member for BancFirst in Tahle- quah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges President’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International Education Committee. President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Interna- tional Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He also completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.

Athletic Director Eddie Griffin

Eddie Griffin returned to his alma mater as the new director of athletics in October of 2017. Griffin comes to UCO after serving as the president of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Asso- ciation. He also served as an athletic director for Oklahoma City Public Schools and Northeastern State University, as well as head wrestling coach at Clemson University. Griffin, who graduated with his Master of Education from Central and later became the head wrestling coach for the Bronchos, helped lay a foundation for success in athletics at UCO. He led the Bronchos to three of their first four national championships in wrestling. In 2008, Griffin was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to coaching at Clemson University, Griffin’s four-year run as UCO’s head wrestling coach not only set the tone for the Bronchos to become one of the most revered programs in the country, but it rivals that of any coach in the sport. He was named the Rookie Coach of the Year by Amateur Wrestling News in 1979. He coached 26 All-Americans, 11 individual national cham- pions and put together a 40-18-1 dual record that included wins over Alabama, Arizona, Brigham Young, Oregon and Washington. Griffin was named NAIA National Coach of the Year three times in four seasons. Griffin’s 1981 team was perhaps the best in NAIA history, scoring a tournament-record 155.25 points and crowning six individual champions, while running away with the title. The Bronchos won again in 1982. Griffin becomes the eighth athletic director at Central Oklahoma. The UCO Bronchos compete in nine women’s and five men’s sports as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The university’s athletics program has a rich tradition of success, with 18 national championships and more than 400 All-Americans throughout its history.

Assistant Athletic Director/Operations Gunnar Poff Gunnar Poff is in his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic director for operations after serving the previous four years as coordinator of ticket sales for the Bronchos. Poff took over his new role in May 2014 and is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of UCO’s Athletic Department. Gunnar also serves as sport supervisor for five sports and is responsible for the areas of athletic training, strength & conditioning, ticketing and game-day operations. A native of Sayre, Gunnar was a pitcher for the Southwestern Oklahoma baseball team during the mid- 2000s and earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from SWOSU in 2007. Poff went on to earn a Master of Education in intercollegiate athletics administration in 2009 from the University of Oklahoma, working in the office of event management during his tenure at OU. Gunnar is married (Tessa) and has three daughters (Presley, Piper and Devyn).

Assistant Athletic Director/Business Britni Brannon Serving as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic director for business is Britni Brannon, who is also UCO’s senior women’s administrator. An Oklahoma native, Brannon graduated from UCO in 2002 and spent the next five years working for an audio/visual company doing marketing, advertising and materials management. A Certified Procurement Officer with the State of Oklahoma, Brannon returned to UCO in 2007 as a Buyer II in the Purchasing, Payment Services & Travel department and was in that capacity until moving to the athletic department as business manager in the fall of 2012. Britni is married (Todd) and has one son (Alex).

Assistant Athletic Director/Compliance Darnell Smith In his eighth year as assistant athletic director for compliance at Central Oklahoma, Darnell Smith, manages the areas of NCAA compliance, student-athlete services and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), while also directing the student-athlete welfare programming and serving as Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Athletics. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Smith was a four-year member and two-year starter of the Oklahoma State football team from 2002-06 at defensive end. A standout student-athlete, he was a three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar award at OSU and earned second-team honors on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team among other accolades. Smith came to UCO from the University of New Mexico, where he served as director of compliance from February 2009 to June 2010. In his role with UNM he managed 11 sports by maintaining institutional control in all aspects of compliance. Prior to his time at UNM, Smith served as a management development trainee from June 2008 to February 2009 with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. He is married (Candace) and has one son (Darnell, Jr.).

39 2017-18 UCO Wrestling Athletic Administration Assistant Athletic Director/Sponsorships and Marketing Brandon Baker Brandon Baker is in his seventh year at Central Oklahoma as assistant athletic director for sponsorships and marketing. He is responsible for corporate sponsorships and marketing for all athletic events on the UCO campus, working with local, regional and national businesses to create memorable experiences for both fans and sponsors. Baker was at the Oklahoma City RedHawks for 10 years before coming to UCO, working with corporate sponsorships, baseball operations, game-day experience and ticket office management. He spent two years prior to that with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. A native of Fulton, Mo., Baker is a University of Missouri graduate and was involved with the Mizzou chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Baker is married (Erin) and has two sons (Benjamin and Evan).

Director of Athletic Compliance Jeremy Rogers Jeremy Rogers joined the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department in November of 2012 and currently serves as director of athletic compliance. A native of Medford, Rogers played football at Southern Nazarene University and earned all-conference honors at tight end. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from SNU in 2007. Jeremy went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2012. While at OU he worked as an intern for the Athletic Compliance Department and Office of Legal Counsel. Jeremy is licensed to practice law in the state of Oklahoma and is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Assocation. Jeremy is married (Rachel) and they have two children - son (Mason) and daughter (Norah).

Director of Stampede Club Al Jones Al Jones took over as director of Central Oklahoma’s Stampede Club in July 2014. The Stampede Club is the athletic booster club for all UCO sports and helps support the athletic department through financial contributions and other events. Jones, who has been involved with Broncho athletics in a variety of ways since the early 1960s, had served as executive director and membership coordinator of Alumni Relations at UCO for six years before joining the athletic department. Jones was a student trainer and manager for the 1962 Central football team that won the NAIA national championship and he earned both bachelor’s (1966) and master’s (1974) degrees in education from UCO. A past member of both the 45th Infantry Division Army National Guard and United States Air Force Reserves, Jones was a teacher for many years at Stillwater and Millwood in addition to serving as headmaster/superintendent at Oklahoma Christian Schools. He worked in private business from 1998 until coming to UCO in April 2008 as executive director of Alumni Relations. Al is married (Sharon) and has two sons (Jon and Jeff).

Director of Ticket Operations Bill Shaw Bill Shaw took over as Director of Ticket Sales for the University of Central Oklahoma Athletic Department in September of 2017. Shaw oversees all aspects of ticket sales both online, and at the box office of football, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, men’s & women’s basketball, and softball. He returns to Central Oklahoma where he previously worked as the assistant coach for women’s basketball. Shaw served under current head coach Guy Hardaker from 2008-14, helping the Bronchos reach the Sweet 16 in 2009 and 2011. Shaw comes to UCO following three years in the private business sector. Bill is married (Patricia) and has two children (Andy and Hayden).
