Considered one the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, the Multipurpose Building is in its 34th year of service to the university. The $5.5 million facility was built at no expense to the State of Missouri, as financing was accomplished solely through student fees.

The “Multi” truly lives up to its name, as it is one of the busiest places on campus. In addition to being the home of Mules and Jennies basketball and indoor track and field, Jennies volleyball, and Mules wrestling, the facility is used by university students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public.

Designed primarily for recreational use, the building features a spacious main arena with a six-lane track, a swimming pool, five indoor and two outdoor handball/racquetball courts, areas for free and universal weights, an activities area, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and offices for UCM’s Intercollegiate Athletics staff. The main arena can accommodate four basketball or six volleyball courts at one time or all of the events for an indoor track meet.

Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 7,500 for bas- ketball and volleyball, making it the largest such facility in the MIAA. It also seats 1,640 fans for indoor track meets and 10,000 people for concerts.

Numerous special events take place in the Multi each year. It hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Associa- tion’s state volleyball tournament from 1988 utnil 2008, while state high school playoff games for basketball are also played annually in the building.

In addition, the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are contested in the Multipurpose Building. The facility is also used for Central’s annual commencement ceremonies, major concerts, and other UCM events.

The Multi underwent a major renovation during the summer of 1998. An inlaid-wood floor was installed in the main arena, replacing most of the original Tartan surface and eliminating the need for the portable-wood floor that had been used for basketball since 1988, while the running track was resurfaced and new jumping and vaulting pits were created for track and field. 14 Head Coach Justin Ensign Head Coach Justin Ensign

The University of Central Missouri hired from within as former assistant Justin Ensign remains at UCM for the third season, taking over as the Interim Head Wrestling Coach for the 2010-11 season.

“I think Justin is the right man for the job, he held together the wrestling program this spring after Robin’s (Ersland) departure.” UCM Athletic Director Jerry Hughes said. “This will make it a smooth transition as he already knows the student-athletes, staff, school and community.”

Ensign served the past two years as a graduate assistant coach under NCAA Division-II wrestling Hall-of-Fame coach, Robin Ersland. Ersland departed UCM for the head position at Minot State (N.D.) following 15 seasons as the Mules head coach. Ensign has seen the Mules complie a 14-16 dual record in the past two seasons, while finishing in the top-25 at the National Championships both seasons (18th in 2009, 22nd in 2010). Ensign also helped guide the Mules to five individual All-American performances.

“I am very thankful and excited for this opportunity given to me by Athletic Director Jerry Hughes and the administration.” Ensign said. “Central Missouri is a great academic institution with rich wrestling tradition. We have had some legendary head coaches in Roger Denker, Mike Hagerty, and one of my mentors, Robin Ersland. I hope to continue their legacy of the Mules wrestling program into the future. We have a good group of guys returning and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Ensign came to UCM from Division I Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., where he coached for one season after a four-year career for the Seahawks. During his career there, he was named team MVP two times. He spent two seasons ranked in the top 5 in the CAA and was a two-year team captain, and two-time Iron Man award winner. He was a four-year starter, twice at 141 and two at 149 pounds. He was coached his first two years by Joe Ryan and spent his last two under current Tif- fin University head coach Doug Jesse.

As a coach, Ensign spent the 2007-08 season as the lone assis- tant, helping the team finish fourth at the Virginia Duals. He also had two NCAA-I East Region third place winners.

University of Central Missouri Mules wrestling opens a Kansas and Missouri area, which he did, but he also landed new chapter this season as fifteen-year Head Coach Robin two prospects from Arizona and Colorado. Ensign speaks to Ersland passed the torch to his understudy, Justin Ensign. his athletes with an honesty rooted in his own experiences as Ensign spent the past two seasons with Ersland as a graduate a athlete himself. It’s one of the characteristics that make him assistant, soaking up as much knowledge from the coaching an intriguing find, worth donning a black and red singlet for. Hall-of-Famer as possible in order to guide him into his first “It’s been hard work to take over for Robin (Ersland), but head coaching job. I was ready for it. Working with college guys Americans. who love the sport makes it fun for me.” UCM wrestlers have historically been in really good shape, this year is no different. The older guys are carrying on the tradition and showing the younger wrestlers how it’s done and what being a Mule is all about. Even the coaching staff has been working really hard in the room. Former Mule Jesse Whitson and first-year graduate assistant coach Andy Nicola are already putting the Mules philosophy into action and ready to watch it take off when the 2010-11 season begins November 13, as the Mules host the UCM Open. Once again the schedule is loaded with NWCA top-20 Seniors; Gillenwater, Hayes, and Walker teams including preseason ranked No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney, No. 9 Wisconsin-Parkside, No. 11 Central Oklahoma, and The 2010-11 Mules do not have a national qualifier returning No. T-20 Fort Hays State. to the lineup. However, four letterman return. Seniors The team’s goals remain high, as always. In the bigger Brandon Hayes and Marcus Walker each lettered a season picture, Ensign says placing in the top-15 at nationals is ago. Hayes is a two-time letter winner. Sophomores Brandon absolutely achievable. Yes, that means an improvement Russow and Phil Witt each earned letters with a combined from last year. But, where big points were counted on from 43 wins and 76 takedowns between them in 2009-10. Toss Bloodgood and Bailes last year , those points will still be Senior Cody Gillenwater into the mix and the Mules have a attainable through a collective effort. core lineup with dangerously good potential. To get there, Ensign hopes to finish top-3 in the region. The seniors will work to keep the rest of the team on track That means plenty of guys will need to qualify with a top-4 and improving from day-to-day. Walker and Hayes have seen finish in their weight. The three seniors’ combined record of 51-43 a year ago led to a 5th place regional finish for Hayes and 6th for Walker. Gillenwater may have been one of the most underrated wrestlers last season. Ensign has told his guys that there is nothing standing in the way of them improving on the 22nd overall finish at last year’s National Championship Tournament. “As a coaching staff, looking at the pre-season ranking, we see wrestlers that our guys have beaten in the past. We definitely see a path to where we want be towards the end of the season. If our guys continue to train hungry, and stay healthy, they will get to the podium at the end of the year.” Ensign’s relentless effort throughout the recruiting season has given the Mules a good young base for those seniors to mold. In all, 16 new faces joined the program. The coach Sophomore Brandon Russow voiced his preference for bringing athletes from the from 2010-11 Season Preview 19

Forrest at 149 last year. He’s an exciting guy to watch and he could surprise a lot of teams. Cloutier will also see a lot of action. 157: Front runners are Neumann and Naylor, they both have been getting better each year. Neuman has the edge because he has been better in tournaments and wrestle- offs, but it’s up in the air. Zeb Spicer has been really tough in the weight-room and practices. Cloutier might squeeze in because the competition at 149 is so tough. 165: We need to see how Chase Chavers recovers from knee surgery. He’s committed to making weight and when he gets healthy he could make a strong run in that weight class nationally. Until that situation unfolds Todd Brier, or possibly the non-starter from 157 in Naylor, Neuman, or Spicer will be called on to start there. Sophomore Phil Witt 174: Willie Ressel will see some time for us this year. He’s put in his time and works really hard. Over the years he’s had some nice wins to build on. I think he’s ready to step it up a Coaches Corner notch. Ensign gives a look into the locker room, highlighting the 184: Witt shown to me that he has what it takes to hold strong points of the 2010-11 Mules that class for us. He’s right there and beat the 2009 defending national champ twice last year.” The seniors have a lock on their starting spots, that leaves seven starting roles up for grabs. Here’s a weight by weight breakdown of the 2010-11 Mules. 125: Trevor Brown matured last year. He placed at the Denker and won some matches. He works hard and will go out and fight as hard as anyone. 133: A really tough group. Gillenwater placed in some tough tournaments but was always in the shadow of Bloodgood. I think he’s poised to have a good season. He’s doing the little things right in the practice room and outside. 141: Walker made all-region last year. He’ll be challenged by the two guys at 133 who don’t win out. It’s going to be another competitive weight class. Walker has shown that he can be a leader and take his talent to the next level. He’s a smart kid and listens really well, it also helps that he has a god-given talent in his athleticism. 149: Russow had a really good year last year, finishing fourth in the nation in pins. The outlook for the 2009-2010 Mules was a promising one. With three All-Americans returning and a crop of young talent in the room for coach Ersland’s final season, expectations were high. The Mules began the year as the No. 15 ranked team in the NWCA preseason poll. Before the dual season began, three of the four returning national qualifiers were sidelined with injury, including two of three All-Americans. However, the program battled through one of the toughest schedules in the country. For the 16th consecutive year it produced NCAA national tournament qualifiers. Seniors Cory Bloodgood (141) and Matt Bailes (174) each made All-American status. The team ended up in 22nd place. Bloodgood’s fifth place finish was the highest for a Mule in the 141-pound class since Stas Khaitin took fifth in 2001. Bailes also stood on the podium for Central Missouri in seventh place. Central Missouri hosted the Super 2 Regional Tournament. Bailes and Bloodgood qualified with third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Three talented underclassmen, Phil Witt (184), Doug Thompson (197), and Brandon Hayes (HWT) all finished fifth, one match away from qualifying. Marcus Walker (133) and Bryan Click (165) each placed sixth. Walker fell victim to eventual national runner-up, UNO’s Cody Garcia. Hayes was knocked out of the championship bracket by eventual heavyweight national champion, UNO’s Elijah Madison. Bloodgood led the team with 35 wins. He was followed by Hayes (28), Russow (25), Bailes (24), and Witt (18). A 5-9 record was the lowest win total since Ersland’s third season (1996-97) when the Mules went 3-9. 2009-10 Dual Meet Results Six Mules made the NWCA All-Academic teams.
