This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. Wee Victoria Institution, Jalan Hang Tuah, 55200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia E-mail : [email protected] ABSTRACT This study identifies the pattern of Internet use among 608 upper secondary science students from fourteen schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All schools have computers, out of which 9 have Internet facilities and 3 Internet terminals are located in the school resource centres. About 51.5% of respondent used the Internet. The main reasons for non-use are lack of skill and non-availability. The users mainly accessed the Net from their homes and acquired Internet skills by self-teaching or learning from friends. Slightly over 70% of Net users spent less than 5 hours a week on various functions, but few used it for study-related activities. The average time spent on the Internet was 4.89 hours per week. Most of the Net users (91.4%) explored the World Wide Web while 75.4% used E-mail, 52.1% used IRC or ICQ, 15.7% joined Newsgroups, 2.2% used it for downloading, and 0.6% used it for playing online games. Major problems faced were “lack of skills” and “lack of time”. The Internet was perceived to be a rich information reservoir that provides fast and efficient access to information. The majority believed that Internet did not affect their learning process, with 20.7% reporting a positive effect and 4.5% a negative effect. -

EDUCATIONAL PROVISION FOR YOUNG PRISONERS: TO REALIZE RIGHTS OR TO REHABILITATE? A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Rosfizah Md Taib School of Law, Brunel University August 2012 Abstract This thesis examines the extent to which, and the reasons why, the government of Malaysia provides educational opportunities for children and young people who are being detained in the closed (penal) institutions on orders under section 91 (1) (f) and section 97 of the Child Act, 2001. This thesis presents a detailed analysis of the driving factor(s) that motivate the government of Malaysia in formulating and implementing policy and law in regards to providing educational opportunities for such young people. The thesis, therefore, examines the conceptualization by the Malaysia Prisons Department of children‟s rights, particularly their rights to education and offender rehabilitation. Analysis reveals that, educational rights in Malaysia have such priority because education is seen generally as the way to socialize (all) young people and to improve human capital and economic potential in Malaysia. Consequently, rehabilitation in Malaysian penal institutions is conceptualized almost entirely as education. The thesis argues that the Malaysian government has been using children‟s rights to education and also offender rehabilitation to improve the process of socialization of young people in prisons institutions to enable them to contribute to the achievement of the national goals. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS To My Beloved Late Parents, MD. DewarpNet: Single-Image Document Unwarping With Stacked 3D and 2D Regression Networks Sagnik Das∗ Ke Ma∗ Zhixin Shu Dimitris Samaras Roy Shilkrot Stony Brook University fsadas, kemma, zhshu, samaras, [email protected] Abstract Capturing document images with hand-held devices in unstructured environments is a common practice nowadays. However, “casual” photos of documents are usually unsuit- able for automatic information extraction, mainly due to physical distortion of the document paper, as well as var- ious camera positions and illumination conditions. In this work, we propose DewarpNet, a deep-learning approach for document image unwarping from a single image. Our insight is that the 3D geometry of the document not only determines the warping of its texture but also causes the il- lumination effects. Therefore, our novelty resides on the ex- plicit modeling of 3D shape for document paper in an end- to-end pipeline. Also, we contribute the largest and most comprehensive dataset for document image unwarping to date – Doc3D. This dataset features multiple ground-truth annotations, including 3D shape, surface normals, UV map, Figure 1. Document image unwarping. Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I have been unconsciously entangled in a historical process of the making of modern Buddhism. There was a Chinese temple beside my house in Penang, Malaysia. The main deity was likely a deified imperial court officer, though no historical record documented his origin. A mosque serenely resided along the main street approximately 50 meters from my house. At the end of the street was a Hindu temple decorated with colorful statues. Less than five minutes’ walk from my house was a Buddhist association in a two-storey terrace. During my childhood, the Chinese temple was a playground. My friends and I respected the deities worshipped there but sometimes innocently stole sweets and fruits donated by worshippers as offerings. Each year, three major religious events were organized by the temple committee: the end of the first lunar month marked the spring celebration of a deity in the temple; the seventh lunar month was the Hungry Ghost Festival; and the eighth month honored, She Fu Da Ren, the temple deity’s birthday. The temple was busy throughout the year. Neighbors gathered there to chat about national politics and local gossip. The traditional Chinese temple was thus deeply rooted in the community. In terms of religious intimacy with different nearby temples, the Chinese temple ranked first, followed by the Hindu temple and finally, the mosque, which had a psychological distant demarcated by racial boundaries. I accompanied my mother several times to the Hindu temple. Once, I asked her why she prayed to a Hindu deity.
