Dear Asian Access Staff and Guests: Many of you have asked about optional vacation opportunities after the 40th Anniversary in Port Dickson, Malaysia. Our local event coordinator has negotiated a variety of packages you can take advantage of if you like. The first set of options revolves around two nights and three days in Kuala Lumpur. You can stay at any of a number of downtown hotels at discounted rates (from RM200 to RM350 per night and including breakfast) and choose any of the sightseeing tours listed as options 1-16. The second set of options (#17 – 21) is hotel and activity package deals (not including airfare, see each option for details of what is included, but all are two nights and three days). You will go directly from Port Dickson to the KL Airport and take a flight to whichever destination that you choose among the various destinations. This is initial information. However, there are still large areas of forested lands scattered throughout the state either under forest reserves, owned by the state, private companies or private landowners. Since the beginning of civilization rivers have been the most important source of food, water resources and transportation. In Malaysia, human settlement always related or concentrated along the rivers. Sungai Selangor (Selangor River), is one of the main rivers in the state of Selangor. The headwater of Sungai Selangor originates from the highland area of the Titiwangsa Range, which is part of the Main Range, the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia. It is an important source of water supply for domestic and agriculture use and fishing industries for people living along the riverbanks. Sungai Selangor flows mainly through oil palm estates and small villages and it does not pass through any major towns. Thus the riparian vegetation along the riverbanks is still intact. According to a report prepared by the Department of Environment, Sungai Selangor river basin is listed as one of the two cleanest rivers in Selangor (Environmental Quality Report, 1996). This river is highlighted here not because of its important food and water resources but of its ecotourism factor.

    BAY OF BENGAL PROGRAMME BOBP/REP/86 REPORT OF THE REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MARINE PROTECTED AREAS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT 1-4 November, 1999 Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia BAY OF BENGAL PROGRAMME Chennai, India 2000 ii Preface This document is the report of a regional symposium on marine protected areas and their management, held in Alor Setar, Kedah state, Malaysia, from 1 to 4 November, 1999. It was organised by the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia, with support from the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) and was attended by representatives from the seven member-countries of the BOBP and resource persons from Australia and the Philippines. The document contains the text of the Alor Setar Declaration passed by the symposium participants and papers presented at the symposium plus brief reports of question-and-answer sessions. The BOBP is a multi-agency regional fisheries programme that covers seven countries around the Bay of Bengal — Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand. The Programme plays a catalytic and consultative role in developing coastal fisheries management in the Bay of Bengal, thereby helping improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk in the member-countries. The BOBP is sponsored by the Governments of Denmark and Japan. The executing agency is the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). iii Foreword The Bay of Bengal Programme has carried out several pilot activities on management of marine aquatic resources during its Third Phase (1994-2000). One activity that has aroused great interest throughout the region relates to the Pulau Payar Marine Park in Malaysia. It has enabled the development and testing of methods and approaches to improve the management and conservation of marine parks.

The lack of documentation on the early periods of library history creates an emphasis on developments in the modern period. This is not out of order since it is only recently that libraries in West Malaysia and Singapore have been recognized as one of the important media of mass education. Lack of funds, failure to recognize the importance of libraries, and problems caused by the federal structure of gc,vernment are blamed for this delay in development. Hinderances to future development are the lack of trained librarians, problems of having to provide material in several different languages, and the lack of national bibliographies, union catalogs and lists of serials. It is known that open green space is always capable of providing recreational opportunities to the local community. Templer Park, located between Rawang and Selayang, is seen as a strategic location to attract nearby communities from heavily populated areas to perform their recreational activities. However, the function of the park may be in doubt if the park has not successfully fulfilled the recreational needs and demands among local residents. Since more and more people are living in cities, Templer Park’s function as one of the most important green spaces in the state of Selangor must be understood because people’s interest for recreation activities is increasing too. Therefore, this study investigated the factors influencing participation in recreational activities at Templer Park. A total of 200 respondents were involved in this study by answering survey questionnaires regarding the factors that might contribute to their decision to choose Templer Park as a place for them to carry out recreational activities. Based on the data collected, this study found that the two main factors which put off respondents living nearby from coming to the park include being too busy with other chores and they thought that there was nothing interesting about the park that could attract them to go there.
