The appointment by the Holy See of Fellowship members William May of the Catholic University of America and John Finnis of Oxford University to the International Theological Commission is a well deserved recognition of two scholars whose research talents have been well known for years, not less so than their firm and full commitment to the meaning and integrity of the Catholic faith. They are also obedient sons of the Church, who recognize that the final judge of their work-if it touches the truth of the Catholic faith-is magisterium. These virtues-intelligence, industry, faith, fidelity, humility, obedience, prayerfullness, are necessary compo- nents of anyone who aspires to be a Catholic theologian. One can study the world's experience with religious thought without being a theologian. One can be a scholar in religious matters without being a Christian, certainly without being a Catholic theologian. But the Catholic theologian, is exercising a "genuinely ecclesial authority," which he usually derives from his ca- nonical mission. He is sent by pope and bishops to preach and teach in a way no different than the apostles who were sent by Christ. Even if this canonical mission has not been explicated, theologizing can only be done in communion with the faith, and this means in communion with the magisterium. Who said this? The International Theological Commission (ITHC) in 1976, following five years of meetings over the relationship of Catholic theology to the magisterium. ITHC, with theologians like Yves Congars, Barnabas Ahern, Philip Delhaye participating, published twelve theses which situated Catholic theologians "in medio ecclesiae," subject to the magis- terium. -

Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting. -

C H A P T E R 3 3 NARBERTH 1980 Area: 0.52 square mile ESTABLISHED: 1895 The Narberth Association in 1891 installed sixty oil lamps on the Narberth Park tract of developer S. Almira Vance at the residents’ expense. It fur nished oil, and a lamplighter earned $7.50 a month. By spring of 1893, the Bala and Merion Electric Com pany had installed electric street lighting on the tract, featuring twenty-four lights of sixteen candlepower Before becoming a borough in 1895, Narberth was each. Narberth Park still had just forty-five houses, not one village but six successive settlements—Indian, and Narberth Avenue was the only macadamized Swedish, Welsh, the hamlet of Libertyville, the street. Pavements were of wood. There were no con nucleus of a “Godey’s L ady’s Book town” called necting drains or sewer system, and no police. BIBLIOFICTIONS: OVIDIAN HEROINES AND THE TUDOR BOOK by Lindsay Ann Reid A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Lindsay Ann Reid (2009) ABSTRACT ―Bibliofictions: Ovidian Heroines and the Tudor Book‖ Lindsay Ann Reid Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Graduate Department of English, University of Toronto This dissertation explores how the mythological heroines from Ovid‘s Heroides and Metamorphoses were catalogued, conflated, reconceived, and recontextualized in vernacular literature; in so doing, it joins considerations of voice, authority, and gender with reflections on Tudor technologies of textual reproduction and ideas about the book. In the late medieval and Renaissance eras, Ovid‘s poetry stimulated the imaginations of authors ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower to Isabella Whitney, William Shakespeare, and Michael Drayton. Ovid‘s characteristic bookishness—his interest in textual revision and his thematization of the physicality and malleability of art in its physical environments—was not lost upon these postclassical interpreters who engaged with his polysemous cast of female characters. His numerous English protégés replicated and expanded Ovid‘s metatextual concerns by reading and rewriting his metamorphic poetry in light of the metaphors through which they understood both established networks of scribal dissemination and emergent modes of printed book production. My study of Greco-Roman tradition and English ―bibliofictions‖ (or fictive representations of books, their life cycles, and the communication circuits in which they operate) melds literary analysis with the theoretical concerns of book history by focusing on intersections and interactions between physical, metaphorical, and imaginary books. -

Smith Washington, D.C. 2016 A Church Apart: The Catholic Church in the Rural South, 1939-1990 Seth R. Smith, Ph.D. Director: Leslie Woodcock Tentler, Ph.D. This dissertation examines Catholicism in the rural South to answer three questions. The first is how did priests and lay Catholics engage in a pluralistic American society before and after Vatican II while drastically outnumbered? The second is what did it mean to be part of the universal Catholic Church while isolated geographically, socially, and institutionally? Finally, how do we balance the impact of major national and international events on the Catholicism in the rural South with the importance of local context? This dissertation seeks to answer these questions by examining the history of seven parishes – four pastored by Glenmary Home Missioners and three pastored by non-Glenmarians – in the rural South between 1939 and 1990. Throughout much of the twentieth century, Southern Catholics were regarded with suspicion by their neighbors without the protections offered by numbers or their own confessional institutions. Catholics in the rural South dealt with this in two ways. The first was by emphasizing their Southerness. Apart from their religious beliefs, they were virtually indistinguishable from their fellow Southerners, and their views on politics, economics, and race hewed much closer to their non-Catholic neighbors than their co-religionists in the North.
