Abstract: This thesis returns love to the purview of Marxism and punk, which had attempted to ban the interpersonal in respective critiques of abstractions. Love-as-sense—as it is figured by Marx— will be distinguished from the love-of-love-songs, and from commodity fetishism and alienation, which relate to this recuperated love qua perception or experience. As its musical output exhibited residue of free love’s failure, and cited sixties pop which characterized love as mutual ownership, American and British punk from 1976-80 will be analyzed for its interrogation of commodified love. An introductory chapter will define love as an aesthetic activity and organize theoretical and musical sources according to the prominence of the body.

At The Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) we feel it is important that our activities make an impression on the world. The Conservatory has a vision: we want to be among the leading educational institutions in the field of contemporary rhythmic music. The students receiving an education at the Conservatory and the knowledge being acquired through research and development must contribute to the field on an international level. This is a very ambitious goal for a relatively small, arts educational institution up here in the frozen North. However, it is one that we feel is realistic and in recent years we have been working towards that goal.

UNIVERSITY OF COPENH AGEN FACULTY OF HUMANITIE S FILM AND MEDIA STUDI ES, 2013 CURRICULUM MASTER THESIS WITH CONCENTRATION I N FILM AND AUDIOVISU AL AESTHETICS ANALOG AND RETRO AESTHETICS IN THE DIGITAL ERA OF MUSIC VIDEOS AND THE ROLE OF NOSTALGIA Author: Irene Martinez Luna KU ID: ngs735 Supervisor: Lennard Højbjerg Name of department: Department of Media, Cognition and Communication Submitted on: September 2017 Number of characters: 130.679 Standard pages: 54,5 Audiovisual product link: https://vimeo.com/232330410 Password: masterthesis Download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g7rwp4v8gtngobr/Collider%20_%20Just%20Started.mp4?dl=0 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the recent trend of using analog and retro aesthetics in music videos in a context where the high definition digital aesthetic is the norm. The viewer experience of the feeling of nostalgia often associated with the analog and retro aesthetics is examined in depth. Finally, the thesis argues that use of analog and retro aesthetics and the associated nostalgia this evokes in the spectator can position and distinguish a music video in the market towards potential audiences. By using a theoretical analytical approach, the research proposes answers to the primary research question: What are the meanings and purposes of using analog and retro aesthetics in contemporary music videos and in which way are they related to nostalgia? Subsequent questions arising from the research explore the differences in the use of analog and retro aesthetics by mainstream or alternative bands. Specifically, a distinction is made between the use of the aesthetic merely to follow a trend as opposed to using the aesthetic to emphasizing the message behind the music video.

  • Kristin Kontrol Bio
Kristin Kontrol Bio Sometimes you have to rip it up and start again. It was a tough call for Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls was her guise for the better part of a decade, an outlet through which she had crafted an instantly identifiable body of work. Demos made in a studio apartment on a nylon string guitar and posted to a Myspace page pricked the ears of Sub Pop. From there, Dee Dee assembled her group of badass, blackclad cadets and toured the world. Over the course of three albums, four EPs, and a bold brace of singles, Dum Dum Girls morphed from the girlgroupgonebad moves of debut album I Will Be (2010), to the plush noirpop of 2014’s Too True, with its motorik beats and svelte harmonies; a dark heart burning bright. But sometimes the project you pour your soul into ends up hemming you in. As her music evolved, Dee Dee found that she would be forever refracted through the prism of Dum Dum Girls’ early work: retroleaning female harmonies, a backdrop of lofi, fuzzedup guitars. At the top of 2015, she decided to shed her skin, ditching Dee Dee for her real name, Kristin, and adding Kontrol. It was a spontaneous idea – but it resonated with her. As Karen O once counseled her, it may be a leap into the unknown, but little risk means little reward. Her challenge was to start fresh, and go further back into her relationship with music. Her goal was to sweep all her loves together into one genreless experience.
