KPBS Voted San Diego’s “Most-Admired News Outlet”! On May 23, 2017, Tom Karlo and Trina Hester attended the first annual Malin Burnham Awards: A Fundraiser for Reality Changers at UC San Diego, and were thrilled to accept the award for San Diego’s “Most-Admired News Outlet”. Nominees and winners were determined by the public through online votes, which makes this award all the more meaningful as a testament to the integrity and dedication to fact-based reporting that the KPBS News Team produces every day. And we couldn’t do it without your loyal and generous support. Thank you! Pictured here: Tom, Trina, and members of the KPBS News and Development teams. PC Post | Summer 2017 2 Why I Love the Producers Club - Susan Thompson - John and I became Producers Club members in 2012, We’ve gone to private homes and country clubs for through spontaneous membership gifts we had given lectures, and to universities, symphony halls, and to KPBS. I don’t believe we knew there was a PC auditoriums for musical and read aloud programs. But before that time, but we could not turn down the perhaps my favorite activities have been those where opportunity to join the gang at the Valencia Hotel, we had an opportunity to hear up close and personal, when all of a sudden we were pronounced members. those we have depended upon most for reliable news At the time we felt as though we already spent much coverage and entertainment — Rebecca Eaton, Ira of our unscripted time with KPBS or NPR: we watched Glass, David Greene, Marco Werman, Garrison Nova, Frontline, MASTERPIECE Theater, American Keillor, Alison St. John, and my hero of all time, Gwen Experience, Rick Steves, Ifill. (If Robert Siegel ever Martha Stewart, Pati Jinich, shows, I’ll be there in a Rick Bayless, Steven Raichlen, minute!) and listened to This American Life, Radio Lab, Morning This past year we did the Edition, All Things Considered, unthinkable: we traveled with The Takeaway, Wait, Wait, KPBS to the Galapagos and Don’t Tell Me, Prairie Home Machu Picchu. Most of the Companion. We were begin- traveling we do is on our own ning to seriously contemplate — we plan the itinerary, take retirement, and felt as though care of flights, reserve hotels we would have more time to John & Susan Thompson (with the help of Rick Steves, pursue those interests we’d naturally), make necessary had to put on a back burner. It was pretty easy to reservations for popular venues, secure train tickets commit to the public programming we cared deeply in advance. This time we let KPBS do all the leg work about. and we had the most wonderful experience. We saw incredible sights, we heard knowledgeable people, Since then, we have enjoyed so many experiences in we hiked, we snorkeled, we kayaked. And every place the county that we, even though we’ve spent most of we stayed or ate seemed a destination in and of itself. our lives in San Diego, would likely not have known about. We’ve been theater goers for 50 years, but The people we’ve met at PC events have always been went to plays at the Old Globe, Cygnet, Lyceum, interesting, aware, personable, gracious, and those Moonlight Theater, productions we initially had not who accompanied us on this trip have become dear been attracted to, but we went because the PC was friends. We are so grateful to KPBS for giving us this going, we loved them. We went to museums in opportunity to grow with others determined to know Oceanside (art) and Carlsbad (music) that we were and understand more about the world we live in--not unaware existed. Also, in Oceanside, we visited the El just “our” world, but the ENTIRE world. Corazon Compost Facility and came home with a bucket of mulch. I was so excited! __________________________________________________________________________________________ Know someone who loves KPBS as much as you do? Invite them to join us.
