On May 23, 2017, Tom Karlo and Trina Hester attended the first annual Malin Burnham Awards: A Fundraiser for Reality Changers at UC San Diego, and were thrilled to accept the award for San Diego’s “Most-Admired News Outlet”. Nominees and winners were determined by the public through online votes, which makes this award all the more meaningful as a testament to the integrity and dedication to fact-based reporting that the KPBS News Team produces every day. PC Post | Summer 2017 2 Why I Love the Producers Club - Susan Thompson - John and I became Producers Club members in 2012, We’ve gone to private homes and country clubs for through spontaneous membership gifts we had given lectures, and to universities, symphony halls, and to KPBS.     Laurie Garrett Senior Fellow for Global Health Council on Foreign Relations 58 East 68th Street New York, NY 10065 Direct: 212-434-9794 [email protected] As a medical and science writer for Newsday in New York City, Laurie Garrett became the only writer ever to have been awarded all three of the big “Ps” of journalism: the Peabody, the Polk (twice), and the Pulitzer. Laurie is also the best-selling author of The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance, and Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health. In March2004, Laurie took the position of Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an expert on global health with a particular focus on newly emerging and re-emerging diseases; public health and their effects on foreign policy and national security. Garrett has been honored with three doctorates in human letters honoris causa from Wesleyan Illinois University, the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and Georgetown University. Garrett was born in Los Angeles, a fifth generation Los Angeleno. She attended public schools in the San Marino School District, graduating in 1969 from San Marino High School. She graduated with honors in biology from the University of California in Santa Cruz (1975). She attended graduate school in the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology at UC Berkeley and did research at Stanford University in the laboratory of Dr. Leonard Herzenberg (1975-77). As a graduate student Garrett was awarded a full NIH fellowship. During her PhD studies, Garrett started reporting on science news at KPFA, a local radio station.

    Ansar al-Sharia and Governance in Southern Yemen By Robin Simcox emen is one of the most impoverished nations in the middle East. It has also emerged as the most important front of the U.S.-led war against al-Qaeda (AQ) and its affiliates. Given that the Yemeni state’s in- ability to provide basic provisions and services is a key driver behind AQ’s growth, these two issues have become inextricably linked. YA war for territory between the Yemeni government and AQ’s Yemeni franchise, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), has escalated since the start of the “Arab Spring” in 2011. Throughout the upheaval, the AQAP made significant territorial gains, especially in the Abyan and Shabwa provinces. In March 2011, al-Qaeda’s in- surgent wing Ansar al-Sharia (AAS) took control of the southern town of Ja’ar in Abyan.1 While the town’s fall to AQAP was significant, it was not a complete surprise. AQAP already had a strong base there; Ja’ar supplied the Afghan mujahideen with fighters in the 1980s, and remnants of the Aden Abyan Islamic Army already lived in the city. Two months later, AQAP took control of Zinjibar, Abyan’s capital. Shaqwa, in Shabwa province, was then captured in August 2011. The towns were subsequently declared Islamic “emirates.” Meanwhile, AQAP’s leadership remained entrenched in the mountainous territory of Azzan in Shabwa.
