USR BOOKLET aw.indd 1 27/11/2018 下午12:25 SummitAbout the Programme University Social Responsibility Network

niversities are increasingly expected to play a broader role than educating youth and creating knowledge. The Urapidly changing environment in which universities operate requires them to contribute more to the betterment of society through the integration of social responsibility into institutional management, teaching, research, services and public activities. The notion of university social responsibility (USR) transcends the traditional mission of universities and emphasises the social relevance of higher education.

The University Social Responsibility Network (USRN) was established in 2015 on the belief that universities have an obligation to work together to fi nd solutions to address the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the world today, making the world more just, inclusive, peaceful and sustainable. The USRN brings together a group of universities from across the world committed to USR to exchange ideas, resources and practices and to collaborate on impactful projects in an endeavour to promote and elevate the global movement of USR in higher education.

MEMBERSHIP The USRN currently has 16 member institutions worldwide:

• Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan • The University of Manchester, UK • Beijing Normal University, China • Tufts University, USA • Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, UK • University of Haifa, • Kyoto University, Japan • University of New South Wales, Australia • Peking University, China • University of Pretoria, South Africa • Sichuan University, China • University of São Paulo, Brazil • Simon Fraser University, Canada • Washington University in St Louis, USA • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong • Yonsei University, Korea

2

USR BOOKLET aw.indd 2 27/11/2018 下午12:25 OUR VISION • Be an effective collaborative platform for all USRN member institutions in pursuit of USR. • Be an important global player in spearheading USR strategic development for the betterment of universities and the world.

OUR MISSION • To provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, resources, policies, practices, problems and solutions to foster USR among member institutions. • To develop collaborative USR projects with varied scopes and scales within the USRN. • To contribute to the global discussions and development of USR through networking and partnerships within the USRN and with other networks and alliances.

WHAT WE DO Committed to creating a vibrant platform for collaboration, the USRN has identified several areas for impactful collaboration:

1. Global Student Engagement

Student Exchange Opportunity and International Service-Learning Programme The USRN has been active in student exchange, particularly in international service learning, with member institutions opening up their programmes to student participation within the Network.

Its past service-learning exchange programmes have included projects in Sichuan, China (post-disaster rehabilitation), Kyoto, Japan (active ageing), Phnom Penh, Cambodia (solar power installation), Kigali, Rwanda (sustainable water fi lter system building) and Pretoria, South Africa (community engagement and development).

Annual Global Youth Leaders Summit The annual Global Youth Leaders Summit is a ground-breaking international student leader conference that brings together student leaders worldwide to debate and discuss how young leaders can make a difference in the world through community participation and projects.

Each year, the Global Youth Leaders Summit opens up spaces for students from the USRN member universities to join and exchange ideas on different community engagement projects with other international student presenters. The students are also given the opportunity to actualise their project ideas by forming a project group and applying for project seed funding.

Young Community Leaders Fund The Young Community Leaders Fund was established to encourage and support students from USRN member universities to initiate and organise projects in teams with students from other institutions, with the aim of enhancing their intercultural understanding and nurturing their community leadership skills and global citizenship.

The fi rst student project funded by the Young Community Leaders Fund was led by a group of students from six USRN universities, with the aim of serving the local community in slum areas of Uganda.

USR BOOKLET aw.indd 3 27/11/2018 下午12:25 Summit Programme

2. Professional Development Workshop The USRN organises the Professional Development Workshop each year for USR capacity building, with member institutions taking turns to host the workshop in their respective countries to facilitate mutual learning and to exchange good USR-related practices and policies. The University of Manchester, University of Pretoria and University of São Paulo have hosted previous workshops.

3. Promoting Global USR Awareness

Bi-Annual International USR Summit Every alternate year, the USRN member institutions take turns hosting the International USR Summit in their respective countries. The Summit, a flagship event of the Network, serves as an effective platform for university leaders, senior government officials, administrators, scholars, practitioners and students worldwide to share insights and best practices on issues concerning USR and university-community partnership. The Summit also provides an excellent opportunity for different stakeholders to foster partnerships and collaborations, contributing to global USR development.

USR Month To enhance awareness of the USR movement, the Network organises USR Month every October to advocate the social responsibility of higher education. Member universities demonstrate and highlight their commitment to USR by showcasing their USR activities during USR Month. Through the commemoration of USR Month, universities affiliated with the USRN are able to learn from each other’s USR initiatives and motivate other universities outside of the Network to strengthen their USR initiatives.

Social Impact Metrics and Impact Stories The USRN strives to develop better metrics to capture social impact. Many university rankings do not adequately capture the social impact of higher education. USR efforts often make impact in ways that are outside of citations or traditional metrics. The Network is currently collating a set of impact stories from member institutions to demonstrate the versatility of USR in creating social impact.

4. Research on Global Issues The USRN is a strategic network of leading research universities with strong track records in conducting research to address the world’s greatest challenges. Leveraging the strong research tradition of its member institutions, the USRN develops research clusters focused on critical global issues, aiming to produce high-level research and to generate impact through inter-disciplinary and cross-border collaborations.

Some research themes that the Network is working on include the following, which are also linked with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. • Climate Change and Sustainable Development • Cultural Diversity and Social Inclusion • Disaster Risk Reduction and Governance • Food Safety and Quality • Innovative Solutions for Ageing Society • Refugees and Migration

A USRN Student Research Attachment programme will be held by Kyoto University in early 2019 and a Residential Research Workshop will be held at Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge in the summer of 2019.

4

USR BOOKLET aw.indd 4 27/11/2018 下午12:25 5. Publications The book titled ‘University Social Responsibility and Quality of Life: A Global Survey of Concepts and Experiences’ (co-edited by Professor Daniel Shek and Professor Robert Hollister) was published by Springer in 2017. The book not only documents the USR policies and practices of the USRN member institutions, but also explores the conceptualisation and different dimensions of USR. Each USRN member institution contributed a chapter to the book.

The Network is currently working on a second book project to explore fostering USR through a cultural approach.

USRN MEMBER INSTITUTIONS No membership fee is required to join the USRN. However, the following criteria are applied in assessing membership applications: • Institutional track record in and commitment to USR • Institutional commitment to the USRN • Institutional reputation • Geographic location of the institution against the USRN’s geographic representation

SECRETARIAT The USRN Secretariat is hosted at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

USR BOOKLET aw.indd 5 27/11/2018 下午12:25 SummitMessage Programme

Prof. Ron ROBIN

President, University of Haifa

I am proud and honored to be writing these words to you.

These are exciting times for the University. The Summit, entitled "Nurturing a Culture for University Social Responsibility", serves as an opportunity for institutes of higher education to converse internationally about the key issue of integration and diversity in academia. We are proud and honored to host the 2018 USR summit.

The University of Haifa's Faculty and student population is unique in its composition. We are the most pluralistic institution of higher learning in Israel and a shining example of how excellent research and teaching can be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and inclusion. This is our contribution to the State of Israel and its continued strength.

The University’s distinctive mission is to foster academic excellence in an atmosphere of tolerance and diversity – an environment, which contributes to excellent research and to more exceptional, creative and productive alumni.

To our guests this year, we are grateful for your attendance and support of the USR Network. To all of you who have worked so hard for the past months to make this summit possible – I profoundly grateful for your commitment and passion.

Best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable summit.

USR BOOKLET aw.indd 6 27/11/2018 下午12:25 Prof. Timothy W. Tong

President, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Welcome to the University Social Responsibility (USR) Summit 2018.

The Summit, themed “Universities’ Social Responsibility in Shaping a Future of Critical Hope”, focuses on the role of higher education in shaping the future of our society when the world is facing challenges relating to climate change, poverty, inequality, confl ict and on many other fronts.

The USR Summit is a biennial flagship event of the University Social Responsibility Network (USRN), a global alliance initiated by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with 16 member universities from across the world. The last Summit, hosted in 2016 by Peking University in Beijing with the extensive participation of other universities in Mainland China, raised awareness of USR in the Mainland. I am sure this year’s Summit, with support from Israel’s higher education sector and the participation of delegates from different countries, will be another success, generating impacts in the region and the world.

I take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to all the member universities of the USRN and all the distinguished speakers for their contributions to the Summit. Our special thanks go to the Local Organizing Committee, comprising senior academic leaders in Israel and representatives from the Office of the President of Israel, and our co-hosting partners – University of Haifa and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

I wish you all an inspiring and rewarding Summit.

Timothy W. Tong, Ph.D. President The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Dr. Angelina YUEN

Chair, Executive Committee, University Social Responsibility Network Senior Advisor to the President The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The University Social Responsibility Network (USRN) is a global alliance of 16 member universities united in their commitment to university social responsibility, with representation in each major continent and region of the world. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is proud to have initiated this network and host its Secretariat. The network is intentionally kept relatively small in size to facilitate collaboration and strategic development. It embraces a vision: to be an important global player in spearheading University Social Responsibility (USR) strategic development for the betterment of universities and the world.

The biennial USR Summit is a major vehicle of realizing this vision. After the Beijing USR Summit 2016 hosted by Peking University, I am glad that USR Summit 2018 is being held in Israel, having garnered so much support from the Israeli and international communities. This has demonstrated the support the Summit is able to garner and the influence it can have in the region and the world.

Besides the USR Summit, the USRN engages in a wide range of activities, from organizing student exchange in service learning and student summit, to staff development, publication and research. In 2018 alone, the network has organized a Staff Development Programme at University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, staged a Student Summit in Hong Kong and Beijing, launched a scheme in student research attachment, conducted service-learning summer exchange, and inaugurated a USR Month (October) campaign, not to mention the Summit we are having here in Israel.

Student development is a major area of focus for the USRN. You will be witnessing a milestone in our work in student development as we are launching in the Summit a USR student network with USRN member universities’ students as main representatives. We hope the student network will be a force to be reckoned with internationally in students’ global citizenship and leadership development. The student network will be a valued partner of the USRN in promotion of USR.

I would like to thank all Summit participants for your joining the USRN in an exciting and inspiring global dialogue about universities’ role in building a future of hope and peace, and I hope to see you in future events of the USRN.
