S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 10TH MARCH 2018 Welcome to players, officials and supporters from Dewsbury Moor Maroons for this afternoon’s NCL Division 3 game. Dewsbury re-entered the NCL in 2015 having previously been in the competition from 1995 to 2002. The club has been going for over 50 years and run teams at most age groups. The last time we met was in 2015 when we were successful in both games, beating them away in May 40 – 14 then again at home in September 28 - 10 We have been busy during the close season and expectations in the club are high. With the new coaching teams in place of Matthew Nicholson and Jack Bussey with the 1st team and Mark Lilley, Jordan Lilley, Ash Golding and Sam Hallas looking after the newly formed Academy team, player numbers are high. I would like to thank all the coaches for their commitment and hard work over the close season. Both teams have had success in the pre-season games with the 1st team winning 2 out of 2 and the Academy lads winning all their 3 games so things are looking up. Hopefully we can get promotion at the first attempt after the disappointment of relegation last season. The Academy season will start first weekend in April. On the club front we are hoping to raise in excess of £30k to pay for a new state of the art irrigation system, if anybody has any ideas for fundraising for this, please let us know. Hopefully we may be in a position to have it installed for the summer of 2018 but a lot of hard work will have to be done between then and now. A reminder that the club AGM is being held on Monday 13th March, 7.30pm. All fully paid up members are welcome to attend and vote. Anybody wishing to go on the committee please put your name down on the list on the notice board. We have now changed kit and leisurewear supplier to O’Neiils. If you wish to order anything you can order online, go to O’Neills and then the “Stanningley” shop or order through a club official. For the club there is a minimum order so we will always place an order on the 1st Monday of every month. Congratulations to our ladies team who have won the Women’s League for 2016/17. Anybody wishing to go on the bus to Gateshead on 11th March please see Tom or Poppy. Club Lotto - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. The 2015 treble-winners struggled badly for decent results, as we all know, and not only slipped out of the Challenge Cup early on but also found themselves languishing in the nether regions of Super League. Chief Executive Gary Hetherington and his management colleagues, however, held their nerve and were duly rewarded with eventual survival after a campaign which had been inevitably hindered by the retirement of key figures such as Kevin Sinfield, Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai, by a series of injuries and, not least, by the flooding in December 2015 of the club’s training complex at Kirkstall. How Leeds will fare in 2017 is another issue – by the time fans read these notes some idea will have been gained from the Rhinos’ trip to Castleford Tigers on Thursday evening – but one thing’s for sure, they will not panic. Contrast this with the awful scenario at Leicester City. Even those of us who are no great fans of soccer were captivated by the way Leicester won the Premier League last season in what was a truly magical campaign. Fast-forward a few short months, however, and we find that the approach of City’s owner, Wichai Siwatthanaprapha, is diametrically opposite to that of Hetherington. City, fighting relegation in a vivid example of `after the Lord Mayor’s show’, have famously sacked their eminently affable and canny manager Claudio Ranieri, and even folk in what is a cynical and hard-nose sport are appalled. It’s sickening, really, and rams home the message that no matter how successful a manager or coach might have been he is only a few bad results away from being axed. Rugby League has, in truth, a similarly ruthless approach, regardless of Hetherington’s admirable stance; few coaches are more than three successive defeats away from having their jobs questioned. Even so, the Leicester fiasco is an extreme example of the syndrome. Ranieri clearly had a great relationship with journalists (McDermott’s might not be quite as warm, but whose is?) and that may well have helped fuel the dismay at the Italian’s sacking, but a wonderful fairy-tale story has, I think, been tainted by this very sorry end. The episode, though, does make Leeds Rhinos look even better, and I hope that all other Rugby League clubs, including those at amateur level, take in the lesson. Boards and committees should, in my opinion, stand by their coaches, even if results don’t go the way everyone in the camp would like. Pressing the panic button and bringing in someone else who might bring improvement but who will probably be no better rarely works and, as teams in the Kingstone Press Cider National Conference League embark on a new campaign – with some perhaps scheduled to lose their first three games and find themselves at the wrong end of the early-season table – the experience at Leicester, even if City do avoid the drop, may be a salutary one.
