Following a short historic review of the development and metamorphoses of each piece over time, the reader is off ered 240 positions (480 in total) from tournament practice as well as from the magic world of chess composition. In each position a royal piece plays either a crucial off ensive or defensive role. Th ese positions are subdivided into 60 themes, four positions per theme, ar- ranged by their increasing diffi culty. Th e reader may use the positions as train- ing challenges to improve his understanding and playing skills or just to enjoy playing through them. In either case he will learn to appreciate the charac- teristic qualities of each piece alone and in collaboration with other pieces. We thank all the chess players and composers for use of these examples to support this ode to the Royal Chess Couple. Hans Böhm and Yochanan Afek A BRIEF HISTORICAL REVIEW Raya! Mantri! Hasti! Asva! Ratha! Padati! Excuse me? Th ese are the names of the chess pieces from the now virtually extinct Sanskrit, the mother tongue of most Indo-European languages. How and where did the game of chess begin? With this question before them four- teen chess historians from diff erent countries met in Königstein (Germany) in 1991. In view of the gratifying fl ood of insights, the Max Euwe Center in Amsterdam organized a follow-up conference in 1993. Th ese meetings were then repeated every couple of years with the last one taking place in 2005. First it was decided that chess would be defi ned as a board game consist- ing of sixty-four squares on an eight by eight fi eld with an equal number of pieces on both sides. Th e pieces have distinctive designs as well as their own characteristic movements. Th e main goal is to trap the main piece, the king, without capturing it. Th is is a broad defi nition that goes for chess as known today but also for its predecessing versions. According to the historians, the history of chess can be divided into roughly four periods: (1) 4000–400 BC, the forerunners, (2) 400 BC–750 India, Iran, Arabia, (3) 750–1475 Europe in the Middle Ages, (4) 1475–today. FIRST PERIOD: ESTIMATED PRECURSORS: 4000–400 BC Th e fi rst period is characterized by the requirement that the pieces would come from one side to the other side of the board. In that period the move was oft en determined by dice and the player who fi rst brought all his piec- es to the other side was the winner. Just like in checkers captured pieces could no longer remain on the board. Chess historian and composer Ger- hard Josten (born 1938 in Duisburg) found the origin of the promotion in a ring game of the Sumerians. He points to the Gilgamesh epic of about 2300 BC, in which a man seeks his self-destination in relation to the gods. 12 THE ROYAL CHESS COUPLE IN ACTION Th e pieces at the bottom row represent the gods and the pawns represent man. By bringing his pieces to the other side of the board man could be- come equal to God thus fulfi lling the urge for immortality. Philosopher chess players have sought meanings in the pieces across man’s history and will continue to do so into the future across all cultures. We may attach as much value to these spiritual references in our chess culture as we wish, or we may attach no hidden meaning to the pieces at all. THE DIRECT PRECURSOR Th e direct predecessor of chess is the so-called ‘Chaturanga for four people’. Chaturanga, a word in Sanskrit which means four-part, was a war game played on an ‘ashtapada board’, i.e. a game board of eight by eight squares. Th e moves were determined with the help of dice and therefore Chaturanga must be regarded as a game of luck. It is known that in 326 BC Alexander the Great was facing an army of 50,000 infantry soldiers, 1000 chariots, 130 elephants and 3,000 horses, the four-part Indian army.

Chess players are often interested in this question that has never been answered authoritatively, because it requires a comparison between chess players of different eras who never met across the board. In this contribution, we attempt to make such a comparison. It is based on the evaluation of the games played by the World Chess Champions in their championship matches. The evaluation is performed by the chess-playing program CRAFTY. For this purpose we slightly adapted CRAFTY. Our analysis takes into account the differences in players' styles to compensate the fact that calm positional players in their typical games have less chance to commit gross tactical errors than aggressive tactical players. Therefore, we designed a method to assess the difculty of positions. Some of the results of this computer analysis might be quite surprising. Overall, the results can be nicely interpreted by a chess expert. 1. INTRODUCTION Who is the best chess player of all time? This is a frequently posed and interesting question, to which there is no well founded, objective answer, because it requires a comparison between chess players of different eras who never met across the board. With the emergence of high-quality chess programs a possibility of such an objective comparison arises. However, so far computers were mostly used as a tool for statistical analysis of the players' results. Such statistical analyses often do neither reect the true strengths of the players, nor do they reect their quality of play.

    The Wangling Wizards The chess problems of the Warton brothers Compiled by Michael McDowell ½ û White to play and mate in 3 British Chess Problem Society 2005 The Wangling Wizards Introduction Tom and Joe Warton were two of the most popular British chess problem composers of the twentieth century. They were often compared to the American "Puzzle King" Sam Loyd because they rarely composed problems illustrating formal themes, instead directing their energies towards hoodwinking the solver. Piquant keys and well-concealed manoeuvres formed the basis of a style that became known as "Wartonesque" and earned the brothers the nickname "the Wangling Wizards". Thomas Joseph Warton was born on 18 th July 1885 at South Mimms, Hertfordshire, and Joseph John Warton on 22 nd September 1900 at Notting Hill, London. Another brother, Edwin, also composed problems, and there may have been a fourth composing Warton, as a two-mover appeared in the August 1916 issue of the Chess Amateur under the name G. F. Warton. After a brief flourish Edwin abandoned composition, although as late as 1946 he published a problem in Chess . Tom and Joe began composing around 1913. After Tom’s early retirement from the Metropolitan Police Force they churned out problems by the hundred, both individually and as a duo, their total output having been estimated at over 2600 problems. Tom died on 23rd May 1955. Joe continued to compose, and in the 1960s published a number of joints with Jim Cresswell, problem editor of the Busmen's Chess Review , who shared his liking for mutates. Many pleasing works appeared in the BCR under their amusing pseudonym "Wartocress".

    FIDE Laws of Chess FIDE Laws of Chess cover over-the-board play. The Laws of Chess have two parts: 1. Basic Rules of Play and 2. Competition Rules. The English text is the authentic version of the Laws of Chess (which was adopted at the 84th FIDE Congress at Tallinn (Estonia) coming into force on 1 July 2014. In these Laws the words ‘he’, ‘him’, and ‘his’ shall be considered to include ‘she’ and ‘her’. PREFACE The Laws of Chess cannot cover all possible situations that may arise during a game, nor can they regulate all administrative questions. Where cases are not precisely regulated by an Article of the Laws, it should be possible to reach a correct decision by studying analogous situations which are discussed in the Laws. The Laws assume that arbiters have the necessary competence, sound judgement and absolute objectivity. Too detailed a rule might deprive the arbiter of his freedom of judgement and thus prevent him from finding a solution to a problem dictated by fairness, logic and special factors. FIDE appeals to all chess players and federations to accept this view. A necessary condition for a game to be rated by FIDE is that it shall be played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess. It is recommended that competitive games not rated by FIDE be played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess. Member federations may ask FIDE to give a ruling on matters relating to the Laws of Chess.     GM Miguel Illescas and the Internet Chess Club present: Top 10 Checkmate Pa=erns GM Miguel Illescas doesn't need a presentation, but we're talking about one of the most influential chess players in the last decades, especially in Spain, just to put things in the right perspective. Miguel, so far, has won the Spanish national championship of 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2010. In team competitions, he has represented his country at many Olympiads, from 1986 onwards, and won an individual bronze medal at Turin in 2006. Miguel won international tournaments too, such as Las Palmas 1987 and 1988, Oviedo 1991, Pamplona 1991/92, 2nd at Leon 1992 (after Boris Gulko), 3rd at Chalkidiki 1992 (after Vladimir Kramnik and Joel Lautier), Lisbon Zonal 1993, and 2nd at Wijk aan Zee 1993 (after Anatoly Karpov). He kept winning during the latter part of the nineties, including Linares (MEX) 1994, Linares (ESP) Zonal 1995, Madrid 1996, and Pamplona 1997/98. Some Palmares! The ultimate goal of a chess player is to checkmate the opponent. We know that – especially at the higher level – it's rare to see someone get checkmated over the board, but when it happens, there is a sense of fulfillment that only a checkmate can give. To learn how to checkmate an opponent is not an easy task, though. Checkmating is probably the only phase of the game that can be associated with mathematics. Maths and checkmating have one crucial thing in common: patterns! GM Miguel is not going to show us a long list of checkmate examples: the series intends to teach patterns.

Kalimantan 37, Jember 68121 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This thesis discusses about English Chess Game through Roland Barthes's Myth. In this thesis, I use documentary technique as method of analysis. The analysis is done by the observation of the rules, colors, and images of the English chess game. In addition, chessman and chess formation are analyzed using syntagmatic and paradigmatic relation theory to explore the correlation between symbols of the English chess game with the existence of Christian in the middle age of England. The result of this thesis shows the relation of English chess game with the history of England in the middle age where Christian ideology influences the social, military, and government political life of the English empire.
