THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Weymouth to Winchester for the last of our home pre-season friendlies. In the 2015/16 season Weymouth beat us 2-1 in the F A Trophy on this ground coming from 1-0 behind at the interval with Warren Bentley scoring our goal, and Dean Evans and Jordan Copp scoring for Weymouth, who were indebted to veteran goalkeeper Jason Matthews for some fine saves in the game. Today’s game is given added spice by the fact that Warren Bentley who scored our goal in that game is now a Weymouth player and he remains good friends with many of the Winchester players and he attended the post-match entertainment and Danny King’s testimonial. Last season Weymouth finished fifth in the Premier Division of the Southern League with 97 points from 46 games, but finished fifth and then lost to Kings Lynn in the playoff semi-final. Interestingly enough Macclesfield who won last year’s National League and with it promotion to the football league obtained 92 points from 46 games, and must be rare for a team to finish fifth with as many points as Weymouth achieved. I have been to Weymouth’s ground twice in 2005/06 and 2009/10, on both occasions they were in the Conference South. It is worth remembering though that they were founder members of what was the Alliance (now the National League), and have spent a total of 10 seasons in non-league football’s top flight, finishing runners up in the first season and being in the top nine on five occasions. In both 1963/64 and 1964/65 Weymouth were Southern Premier League champions. And they finished runners up in the first season of the Alliance Premier League. In 1949/50 they reached the 3rd round proper of the F A Cup where they lost 4-0 to Manchester United, while in 1961/62 they went one round further, but were beaten by Preston North End. Notable players to play for Weymouth are , , , Tony Agana, and Ted MacDougall. Although cricket scoring duties mean that it is unlikely that I will see today’s game we hope that those who attend enjoy the match.
