A first ever visit to Colne for me making it teams in the league playing up to 15. This sees ground number 241. Ground number 240 had them sitting in 16th place. Only three games have been the new Wembley which is also covered in been played at home which probably accounts for this programme. Quite a contrast in Wembley to the pitch having plenty of grass on it. Colne but one thing both had in common was We had been warned that it was quite high up the cold! and rather exposed. The warnings were right. It was a decent set up though. The guy on the gate sat with his dog selling programmes. I had pre-ordered the ten I needed for our subscribers which looked to be a good move at he only looked like he had 25 or so for sale.

As football crash-and-burn stories go, it’s hard to beat the implosion of Colne Dynamoes nearly 30 years ago. In the late 1980s, the Dynamoes – bankrolled by millionaire chairman-manager Graham White – charged through the non-League pyramid on a budget to make some Football League clubs jealous. And then, in August 1990, having been denied promotion to the Conference because their ground wasn’t up to standard, they folded overnight. The new Colne set about getting up and running some six years later and they are now a well established NPL side plying their trade in the North £2 programme with plenty of ads. Not a lot of Western section of the league. reading material. I probably expected a bit more An FA Cup run and postponed matches has seen from a club who put out some very good media them play only 8 league games with some other content.

This picture probably shows off the significant On top of the hill overlooking the town of Colne slope the best.

There wasn’t a press area as such and there certainly wasn’t any power so it was a case of trying to make the laptops batteries last long enough to cover the game on our Matchday Live Service. I did the hour up until Kick Off with Alan covering the match up until the last few minutes when I took back over. My laptop was hanging on by the skin of its teeth and we were dreading having to cover extra- time and penalties so when David Morgan got the winner in added time, of which we had no idea how long there was going to be, we were doubly A decent Southport following, who gave great grateful. backing to the team, in the gate of 312 probably It was once again disappointing to see the split 50/50. Why bother, they won’t be put through as it is going out on the club’s official website. People hiding behind aliases or using other people’s names to slate the club, manager, volunteers? They are very brave aren’t they. As for the game. 2-0 down and heading out of the Trophy at the first attempt until Devarn continued his great run of form with another great finish on the stroke of half time. We hadn’t played the considerable slope that well in the first half and getting the goal was the turning point. We dominated the second half against a decent side and the introduction of the two subs brought a new dimension to the game and it was Brad who once again grabbed himself a milestone goal, not a particularly momentous one this one, the 100th FA Trophy away goal we have scored, but for those of us of a statistical persuasion any thing to brighten Man Of The Match Devarn once again. up the spreadsheets helps! That was the equaliser and the last 20 minutes was all Southport but it The game was played three years to the day looked to be heading into extra time and possibly since the man who lead us to Wembley Paul even penalties until Morgs late winner. Does the new Wembley count as a new ground if you have been to the old one? Time to consult my membership of the 100 Grounds Club to check. Yes, it does so an added bonus is one to add to the ground count making it 240, you will read elsewhere about 241. I have never seen England play at Wembley. It’s been on the bucket list for some time but for one reason or another I’ve never made it. Quite surprising that as someone who is very pro-England in anything in life I have never seen my National team play at the home of football.

We travelled down on the Wednesday and made straight for Surbiton were the daughter lives. I had had a quick look to see if there was a game in the locality on the Wednesday night to add another ground to the total but alas not. The journey down from to highlighted just how much rain there had been in the days before we travelled as several of the fields were well and truly I’ve seen them play at The Emirates and at the old flooded. Ninian Park (that was a lively occasion) but never at The forecast for the Thursday was more rain but Wembley so the opportunity was too good to miss. we were very lucky and it stayed dry. We paid a visit To make it worthwhile I wanted it to be a to The Brands Museum (well worth it for anyone competitive match and not a friendly. over 50) before heading off for a walk around The England v Montenegro game with England Wembley. We got there far too early in honesty but still needing a point was an ideal time. I couldn’t help think about the win at Slough and the draw at Haig Avenue in the second leg in front of a packed house in the most tense game I have ever witnessed. The days leading up to the game, travelling down on the Saturday, staying overnight in Dunstable and being the first car parked up at the stadium on the Sunday morning and loving I have been in two 100,000 gates at the old watching the thousands of Southport fans arriving Wembley for Football League Cup Finals in the 70’s by coach and car, It all came flooding back. As for the game. You couldn’t ask for more, a Anyhow, back on track. The sniffer dogs were out in force and even though I had nothing to hide they do make you feel a bit on edge! One thing that did surprise me was the friendliness of all the stewards and people working at the ground. I don’t know why I was surprised but they couldn’t have been nicer. We had been warned that you couldn’t take any big bags in but obviously people tried to ignore the warnings as several were stopped before entering.

Kane celebrating his hat-trick goal. I did something I don’t like doing and left a couple of minutes before the end in the hope of beating the rush to Wembley Park Tube Station. Unfortunately about 35,000 other people had the same idea but we made our way on to a Tube without any major problem and the train went straight to Waterloo which connected with our train back to Surbiton and we were back at base for 11.15. Once we got in after another bag search I wasn’t We returned on the Friday morning without any disappointed, it’s a fantastic stadium and even problems and had plenty of time to put the final better when almost full. It promised to be a fantastic night, it didn’t disappoint! Massive congratulations and thanks to Dan Hayes for pulling it all together. There was a packed house, great food and lots of stories of our former players to keep everyone entertained. It was great to see Jimmy Murray in attendance. He had been reported as having passed away in 2014!!!!!

Gary Cooper inducted by Joe Strong (his first visit back to Haig Avenue for over 30 years)

Thank you to Les Rooney who provided the technical services on the night with all the music and microphones. Trevor can always be relied upon for a song and he didn’t disappoint with a fine rendition of King Of The Road which Les quickly found the music to much to Trevor’s delight. There were so may highlights but getting Gary Cooper and Joe Strong, who we all thought had disappeared of the face of the earth, together was inducted by Michael Braham special. That was just one of many. Seeing the tears on the faces of the Patrick family when the tributes were being paid to their grandfather and great grandfather. The pride that some of the inductees had playing for the club came across loud and clear. A very special night indeed and as everyone who attended said we can’t wait for the second batch of inductees now. It would be great if in a few years we were inducting David Morgan after he scores the winning goal at Wembley to win the FA Trophy or Sammo when he scores the goal in the Play Off Final to get us firstly back in the National League and then back in the Football League. Football is all about dreams after all. Eric Redrobe inducted by Noel Warham and Keith Mitchell
