It took a while for the Wanderers to get into the game but in the second half they began to get a grip and grabbed their reward by pulling a goal back in the seventy third minute when James McShane halved the deficit with a well struck volley.

Seconds later and Anthony had a chance to restore Weymouth’s two- goal advantage, a great run from Ben Thomson set Anthony up on the edge of the area, but his shot flew over the Dorking goal and into the empty stand.

To follow was two huge penalty shouts for the Terras. In the seventy sixth minute when Thomson had his shirt pulled in the box by Philpott, Lamport emphatically waved away any Weymouth appeals.

Weymouth had another huge penalty shout minutes later, this time Whelan brought down just inside the penalty area after a nice one-two with Brooks; Lamport again waved away the appeals.

Dorking were finally rewarded for their endeavour with five minutes to play, substitute Buchanan firing past Ward into the bottom corner to find an equaliser for the Wanderers and looked to be sending the game to a penalty shootout.

Jaidon Anthony did look to have won it with minutes remaining, the ball ended up in the back of the net after his initial shot was saved, but the linesman ruled Anthony to have been offside.

But the lead was restored with minutes to go, after just celebrating his thirty sixth birthday, Yemi Odubade popped up in stoppage with his thigh to score the winner and send the Terras one step closing to National League football.

01.08.20 WEYMOUTH v DARTFORD 11 AFTER WINNING THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER SOUTH OVER ONE YEAR AGO, MARK MOLESLEY AND WEYMOUTH COULD NOT HAVE DREAMED THEY WOULD BE IN THE SCENARIO THEY HAVE NOW, 90 MINUTES AWAY FROM THE NATIONAL LEAGUE AFTER 11 YEARS AWAY FROM THE NON-LEAGUE PINNACLE.

An experienced figure as a player, Molesley made over 350 appearances at multiple clubs from the Isthmian Premier to League One, most notably playing in the Football League for AFC Bournemouth for almost five years.

When Molesley became Weymouth manager in April 2017, the Terras were mid-table in the Southern League and averaged attendances of 500 at the Bob Lucas Stadium. Over three years on, that stadium, the club and the manager will be hosting Weymouth’s biggest game for over a decade.

“The previous ten years had been a tough time for Weymouth after a rapid decline from the National League and the club had stagnated in the Southern League. If it wasn’t for the volunteers, some who are still here, the club would be gone. To see us now with this chance of reaching the National League, it’s a great story for the club and it’s a testament to the hard work that has been put in on and off the pitch.

“When I first started managing at the club, it was such a different experience. As a player, you can think selfishly about your own role but as a manager, you have to focus on every role. I remember my first game as a manager, mentally it was very draining and I remember not sleeping much the night.

“The job is so consuming that I haven’t had the chance to reminisce on my playing career yet because there is always something else in this job that takes your attention. The role at Weymouth has been very time-consuming but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Molesley has been part of Weymouth’s rapid rise and provided an opportunity to secure back-to-back promotions if they overcome visitors Dartford, but he makes it no secret that his South Coast success is inspired.

“I’m indebted to my wonderful staff around me for the success we’ve had in this division

01.08.20 WEYMOUTH V DARTFORD 13 DARTFORD SUFFERED FINAL DAY HEARTBREAK AT THE END OF LAST SEASON AND BEGAN THE 2019/20 CAMPAIGN HORRIBLY, LOSING 4-1 TO EVENTUAL CHAMPIONS WEALDSTONE ON THE OPENING DAY. AFTER ONE WIN FROM THE OPENING NINE FIXTURES, JOINT-MANAGERS JAMIE COYLE AND ADAM FLANAGAN WERE DISMISSED.

The Darts could not have found a better candidate to take the helm as Steve King was elected to save Dartford’s season. King is the most successful manager in National League South history, finishing in each of the top six positions in previous campaigns.

King started his managerial career at Lewes over a decade-and-a-half ago, winning the National League South in 2008. Since then he has made three unsuccessful appearances in the National League South Promotion Finals with Farnborough, Whitehawk and last season with Welling United. Today, he will want to make it fourth time lucky.

“Play-off finals are a one-off. We lost one where we deserved to lose on the day and we’ve lost two where I feel we didn’t deserve to lose it. I don’t think I can look back from previous experiences in this position because I haven’t won a final at this level yet.

“The experience I can take is that I know this league extremely well and I have had successful experiences of making it to the final. I need to get over the line and hopefully the stars are shining down on us this time around because we never expected to get there.

“Emotionally, to get over the line this time around would be massive because my staff and I have been together for all the other finals as well. It would bring success after all the hard work that we have put in over the years at multiple clubs.”

When King took over in October 2019, the Darts were in 17th position in the National League South table and far adrift from a play-off berth. Dartford turned their season around from the inspiring appointment of their new manager, starting with a narrow 1-0 victory at Oxford City.
