MAN OF THE MATCH

v YORK CITY

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our former stewards, Tony Archer. Tony passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 5th and although he had been unwell for some time it was still unexpected. Tony had volunteered for several seasons but unfortunately had to leave this season due to ill health. He acted as a meeter and greeter outside the ground on a matchday helping and guiding visiting fans to ensure their visit to Haig Avenue was a positive one. He was a truly lovely man and will be sadly missed. Condolences from everyone at Southport Football Club After another excellent display Zehn picked up the MOTM to Tony’s family and friends. award against York City CLUB SHOP DISCOUNTS THROUGHOUT JANUARY From 1 January, there will be at least 10% off all goods on sale in the Club Shop. #ONEPORT11 IN PROFILE JAMES HOUGHTON MEDIA ASSISTANT

I was asked by Rob if I would mind writing something for the programme about my role at the club and what I do on a match day. So here I am.

During the summer I finished my Sports approached Southport FC Media Manager Alan Journalism degree at Staffordshire University. Jones to see if he would be looking for any help in the upcoming season. During my time at University I worked at the Liverpool County FA, producing written content about the 18-19 Liverpool Senior Cup. As I’m sure you’re well aware, Southport won this competition so I got to know Alan well, corresponding with him via email to arrange interviews with Liam Watson and my attendance at the Quarter-Final tie at Haig Ave between Port and Tranmere Rovers. So thankfully when I emailed Alan asking him if I could come and help out in Southport’s media team he was more than happy to have me tag along.

A Proud Day as I graduate. On a home matchday, I tend to arrive around 2-3 hours before kick off in order to get everything As I’m sure you can well imagine, watching and ready and start creating content for the club’s writing about sports is a pretty popular job and platforms. The first thing I’ll do is get set up for as such is a highly competitive field. While whichever task I have during the match. This is applying for jobs I decided it was important to usually either running matchday live (available keep my skills sharp by using them regularly, so I on the club website), posting updates via

12#ONEPORT Twitter, writing a match report for the club website and Southport Visiter or any combination of those jobs.

Once set up I’ll stand around for a little bit, catching up with the rest of the media team until around an hour before kick off. At this point I will head down the tunnel to the referee’s room to wait for both team’s manager and captain to appear ready to exchange team sheets. Before they head inside to do this, I'll take a quick picture of both team sheets and run to the club secretary’s office to produce team sheets for the media and those in hospitality. This is usually a quick task but can take a while if the handwriting of the opposition manager is not very neat. In I also assisted at Kidsgrove Athletic last season that case it usually takes some quick google searches and some creative license to work out If you see me wandering around the ground at what’s written. home or away games come up and say hi. 16#ONEPORT I had been looking forward to the visit, I love visiting new grounds and considering it is relatively close I’m surprised the clubs had never met before in some competition or other but no, this was our first ever visit. Fylde became the 217th different team we have played in Non League Football. The trip was not helped by Junction 32 to 33 being closed meaning there was a long tail back of traffic trying to get on the A6 which lengthened the journey by 15 minutes. Coming back we decided to avoid the motorways having seen the length of the tailbacks trying to get on the M6. The gate of 907 included a very good and noisy travelling contingent of around 200, it was a good job they were there as there was not one encouraging chant from the Fylde fans all afternoon. It even seemed to be muted applause when they scored. I couldn’t help but get the feeling the ambition of the Football League by

PREVIOUS CLUBS Glasshoughton Welfare, Ossett Town, Shaw Lane.

Craig Elliott was appointed manager of Boston United in November 2017. Having guided Shaw Lane to three promotions in four seasons with the Barnsley-based club, Elliott stepped up to become Adam Murray's permanent successor at The Jakemans Stadium. He had previously managed Glasshoughton Welfare and Ossett Town, having retired early from his playing days due to injury. Following four successive victories in December 2017, Elliott was awarded the Vanarama manager of the month award.

THE NEW GROUND We have probably made our last ever visit to York Street as Boston prepare for a move to the brand new stadium next season.

I for one will miss the ground as the view out to The Stump is as good as any but also looking forward to seeing the new set up. We had a quick drive out to the site when we were there in September.
