Mary Murillo Also Known As: Mary O’Connor, Mary Velle Lived: January 22, 1888 - February 4, 1944 Worked as: adapter, film company managing director, scenario writer, screenwriter, theatre actress Worked In: France, United Kingdom: England, United States by Christina Petersen In March 1918, Moving Picture World heralded British screenwriter Mary Murillo as a “remarkable example” of “the meteoric flights to fame and fortune which have marked the careers of many present day leaders in the motion picture profession” (1525). This was more than just promotional hyperbole, since, in just four years, Murillo had penned over thirty features, including a highly successful adaptation of East Lynne (1916) starring Theda Bara and the original story for Cheating the Public (1918), “which proved a sensation” at its New York debut according to Moving Picture World (1525). Murillo wrote or adapted over fifty films from 1913 to 1934 in the United States, England, and France, including slapstick comedies, melodramas, fairy tale adaptations, and vehicles for female stars such as Bara, Ethel Barrymore, Clara Kimball Young, Olga Petrova, and Norma Talmadge. As a scenarist, her range included several films focused on contemporary issues—gender equality, women’s suffrage, economic progressivism, and labor reform—while others, such as the child-oriented adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk (1917), seem to have been meant to appeal as pure escapism. In the latter half of her career, Murillo left the United States for England where she joined several ventures, but never equaled her American output. Born in January 1888 and educated at the Sacred Heart Convent in Roehampton, England, Murillo immigrated to the United States in 1908 at the age of nineteen (“Mary Murillo, Script Writer” 1525; McKernan 2015, 80). -

Stern, Associate Professor of Economics Abstract The film industry, namely Hollywood, is characterized by a pattern of large budget releases during what may be termed peak seasons. The peak seasons are centered on holidays, when demand is high, which in turn leads to greater box office revenue. This environment creates competition for release during these days and as such, distributors must compete in releases. This dissertation analyzes this behavior by incorporating game theoretic models to determine optimal release patterns. An economic history of the film industry and film distributors provides the foundation to current film practices. The economic history entails distributor practices through the various eras of Hollywood. A brief analysis of the major film distributors is also given. Chapter three introduces two-player noncooperative games. The first group of games centers on two players engaging in simultaneous play. From these games, a coordination failure arises and the second group games are specified under a correlated equilibrium. With correlated equilibria, it is possible to increase expected payoffs to distributors and increase social welfare. The game theory models are then tested with a series of regressions with data from 1998 – 2008. -

Later that year, following Ingrid Bergman Centennial .......................9 a staff strike, WNET’s newly created program BLACK JOURNAL (with Greaves as executive producer) was established “under black editorial control,” becoming the first nationally syndicated newsmagazine of its kind, and home base for a Best of Totally Awesome: new generation of filmmakers redefining documentary. 1968 also marked the production of the first Hollywood studio film Great Films of the 1980s .....................13 directed by an African American, Gordon Park’s THE LEARNING TREE. The three year cycle, presented ewery Sunday evening at 5:00 through April 29, 1979, will trace the evolution of film from these early works through such masters as Griffith, Chaplin, von Stroheim, and King Vidor and concluding with the recent works "Death in Venice" by Luchino Visconti and Robert Altman's "McCabe and Mrs. Miller." This major series, consisting of 148 weekly programs, was organized by Jon Gartenberg, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Film and is designed to show that film history is "a network of interrelationships and influences between one work and another over the past eighty years." Thus, though a great many classic films are not included, many lesser-known but historically important films will be shown and such phenomena as the beginnings of the motion picture, early experiments with sound, and the development of such genres as Westerns, the historical drama, and movie serials will be examined. While examples of foreign films, shorts, avant- garde, and animated films are included, the primary emphasis of the cycle is to show the development of the American feature film from its roots through 1971. -

While Hollywood is the global symbol of the entertainment industry, much of the actual production occurs in Burbank. The film industry took root in Burbank in the 1920’s whenFirst National Pictures (now Warner Bros.) constructed its studio there in 1926. Columbia quickly followed in 1934, Walt Disney Studios in 1939 and NBC in 1951. The city remains home to four major film and television studios- Warner Bros, Disney/ABC, Cocasts’s NBC Universal and Dreamworks Animation. Various smaller film studios including Cartoon Network, Nicelodeon, KCET and The Burbank Studios are also located in Burbank. These studios act as magnets In attracting ancillary service providers to the media industry who occupy additional space in the market.
