NG***, Christian JUBERTHIE**»* et Vasile DEÇU***** I - GENERALITES Le vaste archipel indonésien se compose de 13 000 îles, réparties sur 5 000 km d'est en ouest, et couvrant au total 1 900 000 km2. C'est encore en partie une terra incognito en biospéologie en raison de la dispersion de ces karsts et des difficultés d'accès à de nombreuses régions. II - HISTORIQUE Comme les autres peuples du sud-est asiatique, les Indonésiens pénètrent sous terre. On connaît, en effet, quelques grottes dont les entrées servent traditionnellement de sépulture. D'autres sont activement exploitées pour leur guano, leur phosphate, leurs nids d'hirondelles (Sumatra, Kalimantan), ou comme réserves d'eau (Gunung Sewu à Java, île de Muna à Sulawesi Selatan). Il existe également de nombreuses grottes ornées à Sulawesi (GLOVER, 1981) et à Kalimantan (CHAZINE, 1996 ; CHAZINE et FAGE, 1998). Dès le début du siècle, des naturalistes, la plupart Hollandais, ont exploré quelques cavités, surtout à Sumatra, Java et Sulawesi (ex-Célèbes), et y ont réalisé d'importantes récoltes et des observations. Ce sont principalement : JACOBSON (1912), DAMMERMAN (1932), LEEFMANS (1930, 1932) et van der MEER MOHR (1936). Les compilations publiées par STADLER (1927) puis WOLF (1935) fournissent quelques informations sommaires. Parallèlement, DANES (1910, 1915), ESCHER (1931), PANNEKOEK (1941), LEHMANN (1936, 1954), SUNARTADIRDJA et LEHMANN (1960), PFEIFFER (1970), BALAZS (1968, 1970, 1971), McDONALD (1976), et QUINIF et DUPUIS (1984), entre autres, ont étudié la géologie et l'hydrogéologie, principalement des karsts du Gunung Sewu à Java et de Maros à Sulawesi Selatan. -

The Poweshiek skipperling [Oarisma poweshiek (Parker, 1870; Lepidop- tera: Hesperiidae)] is a federally endangered butterfly that was historically common in prairies of the upper Midwestern United States and Southern Manitoba, Canada. Rapid declines over the last 20 years have reduced the population numbers to four verified extant sites. The causes of Poweshiek skipperling decline are unknown. 2. We aggregated all known Poweshiek skipperling occurrence records to examine the spatiotemporal patterns of Poweshiek skipperling decline. Ecological niche models were developed for five time frames (1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005) and three spatial extents (eastern occupied range, western occupied range and total occupied range). We used a backward elimination method to investigate the effects of climate and land use on the ecological niche of Poweshiek skipperling. 3. Predictors of occurrence changed over time and across the geographical extent of Poweshiek skipperling. Land use covariates were retained in east models. In the west and total extent, climate variables contributed the most to model predictive power for the 1985, 1990 and 1995 models; land use variables contributed the most to model pre- dictive power in the 2000 and 2005 models. -

Sentinels on the Wing The Status and Conservation of Butterflies in Canada Peter W. Hall Foreword In Canada, our ties to the land are strong and deep. Whether we have viewed the coasts of British Columbia or Cape Breton, experienced the beauty of the Arctic tundra, paddled on rivers through our sweeping boreal forests, heard the wind in the prairies, watched caribou swim the rivers of northern Labrador, or searched for song birds in the hardwood forests of south eastern Canada, we all call Canada our home and native land. Perhaps because Canada’s landscapes are extensive and cover a broad range of diverse natural systems, it is easy for us to assume the health of our important natural spaces and the species they contain. Our country seems so vast compared to the number of Canadians that it is difficult for us to imagine humans could have any lasting effect on nature. Yet emerging science demonstrates that our natural systems and the species they contain are increas- ingly at risk. While the story is by no means complete, key indicator species demonstrate that Canada’s natural legacy is under pressure from a number of sources, such as the conversion of lands for human uses, the release of toxic chemicals, the introduction of new, invasive species or the further spread of natural pests, and a rapidly changing climate. These changes are hitting home and, with the globalization and expansion of human activities, it is clear the pace of change is accelerating. While their flights of fancy may seem insignificant, butterflies are sentinels or early indicators of this change, and can act as important messengers to raise awareness. -

In spite of intensive collecting activities in Southeast Asia during more than 200 years some species of butterflies remain known from very few individuals only and old collections may still yield surprises. Most species of the hesperiid genera Salanoemia Eliot (seven species) and Isma Distant (ca 17 species) are rare and every new discovery extends our knowledge consider- ably. Salanoemia dissimilis is described as a new species (TL: West Java, Soekanegara) and new records are discussed for Salanoemia shigerui Maruyama (Sumatra, East coast, Laut Tador) and Isma cronus (de Nicéville) (West Java, Tjibodas). The new species shows affinities with R. wasile and R. amboinensis from Halmaera and Amboina Islands respectively. The geographic distribution of the genus Rhaphidophora and the close genus Stonycophora is discussed in relation to the Wallace and Liddeker lines.
