Detecting and Avoiding Killer Asteroids
Target Earth! Detecting and Avoiding Killer Asteroids by Trudy E. Bell (Copyright 2013 Trudy E. Bell) ARTH HAD NO warning. When a mountain- above 2000°C and triggering earthquakes and volcanoes sized asteroid struck at tens of kilometers (miles) around the globe. per second, supersonic shock waves radiated Ocean water suctioned from the shoreline and geysered outward through the planet, shock-heating rocks kilometers up into the air; relentless tsunamis surged e inland. At ground zero, nearly half the asteroid’s kinetic energy instantly turned to heat, vaporizing the projectile and forming a mammoth impact crater within minutes. It also vaporized vast volumes of Earth’s sedimentary rocks, releasing huge amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur di- oxide into the atmosphere, along with heavy dust from both celestial and terrestrial rock. High-altitude At least 300,000 asteroids larger than 30 meters revolve around the sun in orbits that cross Earth’s. Most are not yet discovered. One may have Earth’s name written on it. What are engineers doing to guard our planet from destruction? winds swiftly spread dust and gases worldwide, blackening skies from equator to poles. For months, profound darkness blanketed the planet and global temperatures dropped, followed by intense warming and torrents of acid rain. From single-celled ocean plank- ton to the land’s grandest trees, pho- tosynthesizing plants died. Herbivores starved to death, as did the carnivores that fed upon them. Within about three years—the time it took for the mingled rock dust from asteroid and Earth to fall out of the atmosphere onto the ground—70 percent of species and entire genera on Earth perished forever in a worldwide mass extinction. -

The Great Game in Space China’s Evolving ASAT Weapons Programs and Their Implications for Future U.S. Strategy Ian Easton The Project 2049 Institute seeks If there is a great power war in this century, it will not begin to guide decision makers toward with the sound of explosions on the ground and in the sky, but a more secure Asia by the rather with the bursting of kinetic energy and the flashing of century’s mid-point. The laser light in the silence of outer space. China is engaged in an anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons drive that has profound organization fills a gap in the implications for future U.S. military strategy in the Pacific. This public policy realm through Chinese ASAT build-up, notable for its assertive testing regime forward-looking, region-specific and unexpectedly rapid development as well as its broad scale, research on alternative security has already triggered a cascade of events in terms of U.S. and policy solutions. Its strategic recalibration and weapons acquisition plans. The interdisciplinary approach draws notion that the U.S. could be caught off-guard in a “space on rigorous analysis of Pearl Harbor” and quickly reduced from an information-age socioeconomic, governance, military juggernaut into a disadvantaged industrial-age power in any conflict with China is being taken very seriously military, environmental, by U.S. war planners. As a result, while China’s already technological and political impressive ASAT program continues to mature and expand, trends, and input from key the U.S. is evolving its own counter-ASAT deterrent as well as players in the region, with an eye its next generation space technology to meet the challenge, toward educating the public and and this is leading to a “great game” style competition in informing policy debate. -

When a planet transits its star in this way, it is possible to see through its thin layer of atmosphere and measure its spectrum. The lines at the bottom of the page show the absorption spectrum of the Earth in front of the Sun, the signature of life as we know it. Seeing our Earth as just one possibly habitable planet among many billions fundamentally changes the perception of our place among the stars. Humanity, Fuck Yeah!
HUMANS, FUCK YEAH No. 2709630, 2008/10/01 (02:55) Author: Anonymous “Humans are insane. You see, Humans have this concept called “Vengeance”. Once, a Vuux warship blew away one of their early colony ships. Fifty Terran geo-helio-cycles later, without a word, they glassed the entirety of the Vuux homeworld and called it even. Not one senator in the Union even dared bring it up with their ambassador. They have no com- punction to follow the Concord of Equal Force!” “The Human muscle-to-mass ratio is incomprehensible. Their world must have been at least half-again as large as ours. Their biology defies reason, they breathe oxygen and yet can swim in liquids without trouble. They can kill with their manipulator extremities, and more. One prisoner slammed his brain case into a guard, and then beat them to death with his bare hands.” “Of all the violence-capable sophont clades, Humans are the only ones who strap themselves into armored shells and drop out of the atmosphere onto enemy positions. And that’s only after they soften up any ground re- sistance with orbital bombardment. We are certain that they have secretly developed mind-upload technology (and thus a kind of technical immortal- ity). The other possibility, that they are willing to throw themselves into the path of anti-starship weapons without hesitation and risk their con- sciousnesses, is unthinkable.” “I once met a Human at a waystation on a Class 1 world. It did some kind of rough work for one of their colonies. It called itself a “search and retrieval expert” but I’m guessing the translation software couldn’t find the proper words. -

We are hopeful that it will help us to connect to the broader audience and amplify our personal bonding with each other. While presenting Day-to-day current affairs, we are very cautious on choosing the right topics to make sure only those get the place which are useful for competitive exams perspective, not to increase unnecessary burden on the readers by putting useless materials. Secondly, we have also provided the reference links to ensure its credibility which is our foremost priority. You can always refer the links to validate its authenticity. We will try to present the current affairs topics as quickly as possible but its authenticity is given higher priority over its turnaround time. Therefore it could happen that we publish the incident one or two days later in the website. Our plan will be to publish our monthly PDF on very first day of every month with making appropriate modifications of day-to-day events. In general, the events happened till 30th day will be given place in the PDFs. The necessity of this is to ensure the contents factual authenticity. Reader’s satisfaction is our utmost priority so requesting you to provide your valuable feedback to us. We will warmly welcome your appreciation/criticism given to us.
