  • The Impact of Sports Events on Urban Development in Post-Mao China: a Case Study of Guangzhou
ABSTRACT THE IMPACT OF SPORTS EVENTS ON URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN POST-MAO CHINA: A CASE STUDY OF GUANGZHOU By Hong Chen The study on the relationship between sports and cities has proliferated among academics. However, research is mostly focused on developed countries such as the United States and Europe. What kind of impacts do sports events have on Chinese cities? Do sports-events influence post-Mao China differently than developed countries? Assessing the impacts that sporting mega-events have on Guangzhou, which will host the 16th Asian Game in 2010, this research reveals that China’s governments are the key actor in the process of bidding for and hosting mega-sports events. Cities in China have used this strategy to stimulate new district development instead of urban redevelopment. The city governments in China are pursuing sporting mega-events for infrastructure improvement rather than economic issues. The construction of new stadiums and infrastructure, environmental improvement, city image improvement and district development are positive outcomes; however, there is a lack of economic assessment. There is a need for the city to cooperate with the private sector, adopt public participation and to develop a cost-effective use of sports facilities after the sporting mega-events are over. • Understanding Organizational Change in Chinese Elite Sport Training at the Grassroots Level
sustainability Article Modifying Tradition: Understanding Organizational Change in Chinese Elite Sport Training at the Grassroots Level Yang Ma 1,* and Markus Kurscheidt 2 1 Department of Physical Education, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, China 2 Institute of Sport Science, University of Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth, Germany; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: This research examines the organizational change in Chinese elite sport training at the grassroots level, which is perceived as foundational to and crucial for the development of sustainable competitive advantage at the Olympics. Predicted on an in-depth single case study design linked to qualitative research, this study pursued a “thick description” of the process of change in Shanghai elite sport training by identifying the impetus for change and factors moderating the change process. All qualitative data were sourced from semi-structured interviews and official and semi-official documents. Participants included current sport leaders; officials/administrators; senior, including head and non-head, coaches; and renowned Chinese social science scholars who either specialize in or are familiar with the elite sport training scene in general and the landscape at the grassroots level. The key findings, on the basis of organizational change theory, were that the internal and external political pressures are strongly linked to the growing concern about athlete performance management, the alignment of elite sport training with the sport service industry, and limited financial resources; the functional pressures emerge from the broadening of the talent pool of money-consuming sports and newly added Olympic sports; and other fields’ successful practices, the unlimited registration Citation: Ma, Y.; Kurscheidt, M.

Chinese Posters & Papercuts ASIA BOOKROOM CHINESE POSTERS & PAPERCUTS The communication of the state’s desires to the Chinese people through the arts has a long history. This method of communication reached a high point in late 20th Century China during the Great Leap Forward and most especially during the Cultural Revolution. In fact, as many as 2.2 billion official portraits of Mao alone were published during the Cultural Revolution, an astounding figure particularly when you consider that a great many posters published at this time did not include Mao! In the early days of the People’s Republic posters served several purposes not the least being an effective way of communicating with the many illiterate people in the Chinese population. Additionally, posters offered a form of subliminal“ advertising” as many Chinese people tuned out to the messages, however, with the regular exposure that posters offered, ideas were still effectively transferred. While the messages were ignored by some, they were carefully noted by others. It has been said that given the subtle but regular changes in tone and message, posters were even more useful than newspapers to get a feel for which way the political winds were blowing. (Chinese Propaganda Posters from the Collection of Michael Wolf. – Anchee Min & Stefan R. Landsberger. Taschen 2003). Propaganda posters are a fascinating field of Chinese art and political history that opens up the modern history and culture of China in a special way. For Cultural Revolution material we commend to you the work of Stefan R. Landsberger both in the printed form of his books on the subject and the excellent website he and his colleagues have constructed at www.chineseposters.net which also includes an extensive bibliography.
