Of the Rila Mountains Historia naturalis bulgarica, 23: 37-99, 2016 The Dipterans (Insecta: Diptera) of the Rila Mountains Zdravko Hubenov Abstract: A total of 1003 two-winged species that belong to 58 families have been reported from the Rila Mts. The Tachinidae (162 species or 16.1%) and Syrphidae (149 species or 14.8%) are the most numerous. The great number of species (736 species – 73.4%) has been found in the beech forest belt. The established species belong to 84 areographical categories. The dipterous fauna can be divided into two main groups: 1) species with Mediterranean type of distribution (48 species or 4.8%): more thermophilic and distributed mainly in the southern parts of the Palaearctic. Three species of southern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well; 2) species with Palaearctic and Eurosiberian type of distribution (955 species or 95.2%): more cold-resistant and widely distributed in the Palaearctic. Two hundred fifty-five species of northern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well. The Holomediterranean (eight species or 0.8%) and South European (seven spe- cies or 0.7%) forms are best represented in the first group. The European (183 species or 18.2%), Holarctic (124 species or 12.4%), Holoeurosiberian (82 species or 8.2%) and Transpalaearctic (78 species or 7.8%) taxa prevail in the second group. The endemic species are 12 (1.2%). The zoogeographical character of the fauna is determined by the second group. The distribution of the separate categories in the vegetation belts of the Rila Mts. is presented. Key words: Diptera, Bulgaria, Rila Mts., faunistic composition, areographical characteristics Introduction The first data on Diptera of the Rila Mts. were 1982, 1984, 1985, 1995, 2004a, 2004b, 2007, 2008, reported by Joakimoff (1899) and Nedelkov 2009, 2013; Beiger, 1979; Hubenov, 1980, 1983; (1909, 1910, 1912). The article examines 170 river names from the basin of the Iskar river – the largest tributary of the Danube in Bulgaria. The origin and significance of river names emerge through the application of traditional onomastic methods – onomastic (etymological) analysis and onomastic reconstruction. Comparative onomastic data from adjacent and more distant regions in Bulgaria and the Balkans are also drawn on. Conclusions about the relative antiquity of the hydronyms are drawn. Specific geological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical conditions of the above mentioned occurrences of mineral water are the reasons for treated them as parts of a common hydrogeological structure, denoted as Dolna Banya thermal water basin. Scope and boundaries of the basin are delineated. A description of individual mineral water occurrences is presented. The discharge of each of them is assessed on actual measurements and observations of discharge regime. The total outflow of mineral water from the occurrences of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin recently amounts to 53 l/s. The hydrochemical characteristic of mineral waters is presented as well as regularities in the distribution of composition and temperature. A conceptual computer model of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin is compiled and it is used for determining the cathcment areas for each of the mineral water occurrences. The model confirms hydraulic connection between specific parts of the basin and in the meanwhile studies the determination of Kostenets occurrence of mineral water as an autonomous part of the basin.

  • Bulgaria's Pirin Mountains
The Pirin Mountains, Bulgaria ABODE OF THE THUNDER GOD 13th - 27th June Introduction The YRC meet to Bulgaria came about after a chance communication from Lizzie Alderson, who runs Pirin Adventures, a company which provides mountaineering, trekking and walking holidays in the Pirin Mountains of Bulgaria. Further conversations with Lizzie in Leeds and some research on the internet confirmed that it would be a novel and extremely interesting location for an overseas meet, with plenty of scope for a fortnight’s hut-to-hut trekking, taking in ridges and summits as we pleased. Named after Perun, the Thracian god of thunder and lightning, the Pirin Mountains are crystalline and located in southwest Bulgaria within the western part of the Rila-Rhodope massif. The Pirin massif slopes southwards and has a width of 30-35km. The main axis is oriented NW-SE with an approximate length of 70km. The northern part of the range comprises the Pirin National Park of 232 square kilometres, which has UNESCO status. The geology is complex but the mountain ridges are mostly granite. The Koncheto ridge and its continuation over Kutelo and Vihren summits are different and comprise marbleised karst with remains of the granite intrusion and some limestone. Limestone is also present around Mt Orelyak to the east. There are over 180 glacial tarns and lakes in Pirin. The Alpine zone scree and rocks are replaced by sub-alpine meadow-bush areas around 2300m and mountain forest between 1000-2000m. This ecological diversity was enhanced by the rapidly ablating snowfields present in June, providing us with an amazing display of flora and fauna.

Milen Penerliev 1 Alternative tourism is a form of tourism which represents an alternative to the conventional mass tourism. Its forms are small-scale, low-density, divided into forms practiced in urban (religious, cultural, business) and rural areas. Alternative tourism is an attempt to preserve, protect and improve the quality of the existing resource base, which is fundamental for tourism itself. Alternative tourism is featured by active encouragement and care for the development of additional andspecific attractions as well the infrastructure, which are based on the local resources, while at the same time aiding the latter. It has an impact on the quality of life in the region, improves the infrastructure and increases the educational and cultural level of the local community.

All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones.

  • BOROVETS, Bulgaria
BOROVETS, Bulgaria History In the 19th century the ruling Prince Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg-Gotha built a hunting lodge at Borovets and was followed by various their wealthy family and friends. Thus was born one of Europe's earliest ski resorts. The modern resort was built in the 1960's to cater for package ski holidays. Location Borovets is the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria clustered in pine forests. Situated at 1350 m above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain among age-old pine woods, Borovets is located at the foot of peak MOUSSALA (2925 m) - the highest one on Balkan Peninsula. BOROVETS is easily accessible, being at a distance of 73 km from Sofia and 126 km from Plovdiv. The town of Samokov is only 10 km down the road from the resort. Mountain facts Resort elevation: 1,300 m (4,265 ft). Top elevation: 2,543 m (8,343 ft). Base elevation: 1,337 m (4,387 ft). Number of lifts: 14. Number of runs: 20. Beyond the slopes The hunting lodge Bistrista Palace, adorned with woodcarvings (1km/0.6 miles northwest of the Rila Hotel), is the main reminder that Borovets was a royal hunting ground a century ago. Within the resort, a bowling alley at the Samokov Hotel and swimming pools in all the major hotels can be used by non-guests. Horse riding can be arranged, either with or without a guide, from Butch Riding School (on the track from the road between the Rila Hotel and Tyrol bar). The nearby town of Samokov (15 minutes via the hourly minibus) was once the woodcarving capital of the region and has well preserved paintings in its churches.
