These are landscape-dominant constituents of important ecological communities and habitats for endemic wildlife. Together with allied species and genera ( Picrothamnus and Sphaeromeria ), they make up an intricate series of taxa whose limits are uncertain, likely the result of reticulate evolution. The objectives of this study were to resolve relations among Tridentatae species and their near relatives by delimiting the phylogenetic positions of subgenus Tridentatae species with particular reference to its New World geographic placement and to provide explanations for the relations of allied species and genera with the subgenus with an assessment of their current taxonomic placement. • Methods : Bayesian inference and maximum parsimony analysis were based on 168 newly generated sequences (including the nuclear ITS and ETS and the plastid trnS UGA - trnfM CAU and trnS GCU - trnC GCA ) and 338 previously published sequences (ITS and ETS). -

TRIDENTATAE, INCLUDING A REDEFINITION OF SPHAEROMERIA (ASTERACEAE, ANTHEMIDEAE) Sònia Garcia1,5, Teresa Garnatje1, E. Durant McArthur2, Jaume Pellicer3, Stewart C. Sanderson2 and Joan Vallès4 ABSTRACT.—A recent molecular phylogenetic study of all members of Artemisia subgenus Tridentatae, as well as most of the other New World endemic Artemisia and the allied genera Sphaeromeria and Picrothamnus, raised the necessity of revising the taxonomic framework of the North American endemic Artemisia. Composition of the subgenus Tridentatae is enlarged to accommodate other North American endemics and is organized into 3 sections: Tridentatae, Nebulosae, and Filifoliae. This paper deals with the combination of one section, the amendment of 2 more sections, and the combination in or the reversion to Artemisia of some Sphaeromeria and Picrothamnus species. The new names given for previous Sphaeromeria species are Artemisia macarthurii (for S. argentea), A. albicans (for S. cana), A. constricta (for S. compacta), and A. inaequifolia (for S. diversifolia). The other Sphaeromeria we studied (S. capitata, S. potentilloides, S. ruthiae, and S. simplex) had been formerly considered Artemisia (respectively, A. capitata, A. potentilloides, A. ruthiae, and A. simplex), and their previous nomenclature is therefore recommended. PART 2 THE REMAINING IMPORTANT TRIBES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS Another tribe that is usually easy to recognize is the Senecioneae or senecio tribe, important world wide. • The senecio tribe usually displays the following combination of traits: • One very even row of non-overlapping phyllaries • Sometimes additional tiny phyllaries at the base, which are often black tipped, and… • A hairy pappus • Most native members of the tribe are herbaceous annuals and perennials, living in a wide variety of habitats The type genus, Senecio, (no universally applied common name) has been broadened to include over 1,000 species but is currently split into several different genera • The senecio group is typified by alternate leaves • The true senecios feature toothed leaves and a substantial rhizome, whereas… • The split away genus, Packera, has slender rhizomes or other kinds of roots and entire to lobed leaves Let’s begin with what remains in Senecio. S. integerrimus (ncn) is a diverse, summer-blooming perennial in dry woodlands and forests . By contrast, the uncommon water butterwort, S. hydrophilus, true to its name is a tall perennial restricted to the Delta. Here you see it growing among the tules. The water butterwort is one of the species lacking ray flowers. The meadow butterwort, S. triangularis, grows tall in wet mountain meadows and features… …rayed flower heads and triangular leaves A few senecios grow as small shrubs such as this late-blooming S. flaccidus douglasii does. Es donen les primeres dades sobre mida del genoma per a una subtribu, 10 gèneres, 32 espècies i dues subespècies.
