AUTHORS’ BIOGRAPHIES Bonnie Heidel graduated with a Master’s degree in Botany from Washington State University in Pullman, WA, working on the rare plants of northern Idaho. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton College in Northfield, MN, majoring in Biology, with honors awarded for her senior thesis and membership granted into Sigma Xi, the society of scientific research. She worked on threatened and endangered species for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regional office in Portland, OR, on plant species status compilation in the Midwest Regional Office of The Nature Conservancy in Minneapolis, MN, and on statewide sensitive species survey and research in natural heritage program positions in Helena, MT and in Bismarck, ND. She is currently Botanist of the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, a research program of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, conducting botanical surveys and research, and providing technical information services throughout the state. Joy Handley graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID, majoring in Range Resources. She worked as a range management specialist with the Salmon National Forest in Leadore, ID and as an assistant vegetation ecologist with the Colville Confederated Tribes in Nespelem, WA. Used with his permission. 2 3 SUMMARY OF KEY COMPONENTS FOR CONSERVATION OF PARTHENIUM ALPINUM Status Parthenium alpinum (Nutt.) T. & G. (alpine feverfew; syn. Bolophyta alpina Nuttall) is a regional endemic of northeastern Colorado, central and southeastern Wyoming, and northern New Mexico in five isolated population centers. As of 2003, it is no longer recognized as a sensitive species by the Rocky Mountain Region (Region 2) of the USDA Forest Service (USFS); its status at the forest level is under consideration. The NatureServe global rank for this species is vulnerable throughout its range (G3). It is ranked critically imperiled (S1) by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, vulnerable (S3) by the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, and imperiled (S2) by the New Mexico Natural Heritage Program. Of the 51 extant occurrences in Colorado and Wyoming, only two occurrences are on National Forest System lands; both of these are located on the Pawnee National Grassland in Colorado. In fact, these are the only occurrences rangewide on National Forest System lands. Primary Threats Parthenium alpinum is directly threatened by oil exploration, drilling, and associated activities; and by recreation, particularly off-road vehicle use. Both sets of activities may also introduce exotic species and accelerate erosion. Livestock grazing is the prevailing land use in P. alpinum habitat, but there are no signs of direct impact or evidence of this species’ response to grazing. Several characteristics of P. alpinum deter or diminish the likelihood of grazing impacts including pubescence, production of flavonoids, short stature, and flowering prior to the grazing season. However, practices that concentrate livestock close to occurrences may result in negative trampling effects in the unconsolidated substrates typical of P. alpinum habitat. These practices include fencing, salt block placement, and water development. Outside of the Pawnee National Grassland, individual occurrences may also be impacted by mining, quarrying, new road development, and increased road maintenance activities. Most threats to P. alpinum from human activities are indirect or localized, but they may be very important to the viability of small populations or population segments. Primary Conservation Elements, Management Implications and Considerations Parthenium alpinum occurs in long-lived cushion plant communities on sparsely vegetated slopes and outcrops within grasslands, shrublands, or open woodlands. In all of these settings, vegetation cover is low (i.e., less than 20 percent), and the exposed microhabitats are maintained, in part, by wind erosion. While P. alpinum is long-lived and stress-resistant, it may be slow to establish, and its habitat may be slow to recover from destabilization. Trend data are not available for populations. No federally protected areas have been designated that include the conservation of this species or its habitat as an explicit goal. Thus, it is vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation. Parthenium alpinum occurs in Colorado on land managed by the Pawnee National Grassland for multiple-use. In Wyoming, the three largest occurrences are on lands managed for multiple-use by the Bureau of Land Management. Road construction and excavation for pipelines and quarries have reduced its habitat and population numbers, at least locally, in Wyoming. Maintaining the population viability of P. alpinum begins with maintaining its habitat. Systematic survey of the species is not complete in all parts of the Pawnee National Grassland, which is the survey priority in Colorado. The priorities for survey work in Wyoming include efforts to relocate occurrences known only from historic collections and to evaluate whether the species reaches elevations as high as 7,000 feet, which would correspond with elevations at lower boundaries of National Forest System lands. Five conservation priorities are: v Monitor occurrence and sub-occurrence numbers to determine baseline trends and conduct demographic research to help project trends. v If there is evidence for grazing impact identified in the course of monitoring, or if there is an allotment management plan revision that may change patterns of grazing where the species occurs, evaluate the species’ response to livestock grazing. 2 3 v If there is evidence for off-road vehicle impact identified in the course of monitoring, or if there is a transportation or recreation management plan revision that may change patterns of use where the species occurs, develop standards to avoid impacts. v Determine the primary pollination vectors of Parthenium alpinum and rate of seed set to determine the success rate of pollination and the habitat requirements of the pollinator(s). v Conduct molecular genetic research to understand population structures, breeding systems, relations between northern and southern populations, species’ origin, and taxonomic relations between Parthenium alpinum and P. tetraneuris. Please enjoy your outing, and please use your best flower viewing etiquette. Along Salt Creek near the southern entrance to Sequoia National Park, the wildflowers are abundant and showy. Masses of spring flowering common madia (Madia elegans) are covering sunny slopes and bird’s-eye gilia (Gilia tricolor) is abundant on flatlands. Good crops of owl’s clover (Castilleja sp.) are common in scattered colonies and along shadier trails, woodland star flower (Lithophragma sp.), Munz’s iris (Iris munzii), and the elegant naked broomrape (Orobanche uniflora) are blooming. There is an abundance of Chinese houses (Collinsia heterophylla) and foothill sunburst (Pseudobahia heermanii). This is a banner year for the local geophytes. Mountain pretty face (Tritelia ixiodes ssp. anilina) and Ithuriel’s spear (Triteliea laxa) are abundant. With the warming temperatures farewell to spring (Clarkia cylindrical subsp. clavicarpa) is starting to show up with their lovely bright purple pink floral display and is particularly noticeable along highway 198.     ARIZONA COOPERATIVE E TENSION AZ1310 May, 2009 Comandra Blister Rust Mary W. Olsen Comandra blister rust is a native disease in Arizona on ponderosa pine. It also occurs on Mondell pine, a pine species introduced for landscapes and Christmas tree production in Arizona. Comandra blister rust can cause death of ponderosa saplings, but it is not an important disease of mature ponderosa trees. However, infections kill Mondell pine, and they should not be planted within a mile of Comandra. The alternate host for the rust is Comandra pallida, for which the disease is named. Comandra pallida, commonly called bastard toadflax, is a small herbaceous perennial plant found in close association with oak. It has small light pink flowers in terminal clusters and nutlike fruit. It is found throughout Arizona at elevations of 4,000- 8,000 ft. Pathogen: Comandra blister rust, Cronartium comandrae Hosts: Pinus eldarica (Mondell pine, Afghan pine), Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) and Comandra pallida, bastard toadflax Symptoms/signs: Comandra blister rust on Mondell pine. On Mondell pine, Comandra blister rust causes branch dieback and death of trees of all ages. Swollen areas produced on the alternate host, Comandra. These are develop in branches and trunks, and the bark and delicate spores that can travel in air currents only about underlying sapwood die. On pine, orange “blisters” one mile. During the first year, the fungus becomes develop on trunks and branches as the bark splits and established in pine bark, and swollen areas with fruiting ruptures. Infections on Comandra, the alternate host, structures (spermagonia) develop in branches and appear as orange or rusty colored pustules on leaves trunks.

    NUMBER 4 GRANT: PHLOX NOMENCLATURE 25 NOMENCLATURE OF THE MAIN SUBDIVISIONS OF PHLOX (POLEMONIACEAE) Verne Grant Section of Integrative Biology and Plant Resources Center, The University of Texas, Austin, Texas 78712 Abstract: The task of finding the correct names for the main subdivisions of Phlox has been beset with difficulties in interpreting the intent of older authors, particularly Asa Gray. Gray divided Phlox into four main subgroups, some of which have been considered sections, but these are now seen to be only informal groups. Currently Phlox is subdivided into three sections: Phlox, Divaricatae Peter, and Occidentales A. Gray. The name Occidentales A. Gray was not validly published as a section; Gray used it only as part of a heading. The oldest valid name for what has been called sect. Occidentales is sect. Pulvinatae Peter. Recent papers have used the name sect. Annuae A. Gray in place of sect. Divaricatae, on grounds of priority. However, the name that Gray actually used was Annuae, Texenses, and it, like Occidentales, was not validly published. The sections of Phlox are being reconsidered at present in the light of new molecular evidence. Some changes will be needed, but old valid infra­ generic names will still have a role to play in new infrageneric classifications. Keywords: Phlox, nomenclature, Asa Gray. The genus Phlox has had a history of terms subgenus and section in the nine­ problems with the nomenclature of the teenth century. Some authors used the cat­ main infrageneric subgroups. Gray (1870, egory subgenus, others the category section, 1878, 1886) did not make it clear in his still others used both, or neither.

It lies at the confluence of two major rivers, the North Platte and the Laramie, which were Rocky Mountain travel corridors and gateways to natural resources for traders, military personnel, settlers, and Native Americans alike. For all of the research on the local and regional human history and vast natural resources of the Rocky Mountains there had not been systematic documentation of natural resources as represented by the flora and fauna at many of the parks and historic sites administered by the National Park Service (NPS), such as FOLA. Baseline floristic inventory at FOLA was identified as a priority by the NPS under the Inventory and Monitoring initiative. Existing floristic information was earlier compiled and interpreted from vascular plant collections made in FOLA (Fertig 2001). From these data, a total of 177 plant species were reported. This represented 26.7% of the Goshen County flora known at that time. An additional 182 plant species were inferred as likely to be present because they were known from elsewhere in the county and occupied habitats similar to those found at the FOLA. Systematic floristic surveys conducted at FOLA from June 2003 – September 2004 more than doubled the documented flora to 376 species with the addition of 201 species (114% increase).

A fundamental strategy in the preservation of functional ecosystems is to identify and preserve a full compliment of habitat types, which in return support a diversity of animals, plants, and other life forms. Vegetation is an integral component of habitat and provides a relatively easy means of inventory and monitoring of ecosystem health both spatially and temporally. The current study, in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, focuses on the identification of unique riparian and coulee plant associations, or plant community type. The study area is situated approximately 8 km north of the USA border and 40 km east of the town of Milk River and occurs at the interface between the Mixedgrass and Dry Mixedgrass Natural Subregions. Priority research is currently required to address gaps in the identification, description and distribution of plant associations within the coulee and riparian zones of these Subregions. Many of these communities recur over the landscape but may occur as very small patches of 1m2 or less. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) Resource Data Division contracted Wildlands Ecological to complete an inventory of natural/semi-natural plant communities, statistically analyse the data, and describe potential plant community or association types.

Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2.

Harshini, Lokesh Ravi Department of Botany, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Bengaluru, Karnataka, India Abstract Parthenium plant, in general, is known to be harmful, dangerous, and invasive in nature. It causes much economic loss to farmers by affecting the cultivation of crops and considered to be a threat to primary production of crops and biodiversity as well. Parthenium hysterophorus a weed belonging to the family Asteraceae, it is an erect short-lived plant and is known for its fleshy growth along sides of abandoned places, roadsides, and uncultivated lands. This REVIEW ARTICLE REVIEW weed is found in hot and humid climates around the globe. This invasive species is known with different names in different countries such as carrot weed, star weed, congress grass, wild feverfew, ragweed, bitter weed, and white top. The spread of P. hysterophorus has been found to cause enormous loss to biodiversity by replacing natural ecosystems and sometimes known to cause total habit alternation. In this review article, we discuss P. hysterophorus as a weed, its origin, reproductive bionomics, chemical composition, and its pharmaceutical potential as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, anti-HIV, and antitumor activity in detail.
