With over 60 events – films, music, poetry, art, theatre, history, soccer and radio – the LaborFest is indeed bigger and better than ever and we’re sure that you’ll find something to inspire. As always, none of this would be possible without the generous financial support of our sponsors, who continue to share our vision and ensure the survival and expansion of this annual celebration. American Income Life heads up the list of our Premiere Sponsors, as it has since our very first year, and we’re so pleased and honored to feature AIL CEO Roger Smith’s wonderful essay, Art as Storytelling on page X. Roger eloquently sums up what the LaborFest is all about: “Art provides the perfect media for touching hearts, transporting history, and rekindling workers’ age-old hope for a better life.” Thanks also to our other Premiere Sponsors, the Amalgamated Transit Union, , SAG-AFTRA and SEIU. Special thanks to our Festival Hosts, and to all our sponsors, who you’ll find listed on pages 17 and 19. Back in 2000, when Tony Mazzocchi walked into the Metro Washington Council’s office with his plan to start a DC Labor FilmFest, it took a very special labor leader to not only recognize a good idea but to have the ability to turn that gleam in Tony’s eye into reality. Jos Williams embraced the opportunity to provide everyone – whether they belong to a union or not – with a different way to see the issues affecting working men and women. “Come for the movie, stay for the movement,” he urged, and we are privileged and honored to carry Jos’ – and Tony’s -- work on. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s LaborFest as the struggle for economic justice continues.

FRIENDS Jules Bernstein Barbara Kraft/Peter Winkler Bread & Roses Heritage Committee

DC Labor Film Fest 2016 19 20 DC Labor Film Fest 2016 Art as Storytelling By Roger Smith I love a good story. When the DC Labor Film Festival first started 16 years ago, American Income Life (AIL) contributed. We contributed because Tony Mazzocchi asked us to contribute. It seemed like the right thing to do. Dr. Jules Pa- gano , Executive Director of our Labor Advisory Board loved art in all its forms. His brother was an accomplished oil painter, and his painting of Sacco and Vanzetti hung in Jules’ office for years. Jules thought it was important to support Tony’s dream of showcasing workers’ experiences through film. Jules understood the intrinsic value of telling a good story. He knew film was a tool in educating the interested and awakening awareness for the plight of a seemingly ordinary worker’s daily life. Simple; Jules opened that door to art and labor. I soon learned that nothing about film, art and labor is simple. What started as a supportive gesture of writing a check has become a wholeheart- ed support of discovering new ways to tell workers’ stories. And oh, what stories there are. Art provides the perfect media for touching hearts, transporting history, and rekindling workers’ age-old hope for a better life. Labor and art provides me a visceral experience, fully awakening each of my senses. It offers a rekindling of my belief that with hard work, a kid with a GED could live the American Dream. Workers’ dreams today are as real as mine were, limited only by our imagination. For me, labor in art trumpets the call to collective action in making every worker’s dreams come true Art is personal. To be truthful, as a homeless teen with a GED, my experience with art was quite limited. At the time, I didn’t give much thought to the murals in Los Angeles that depicted farmworkers in stooped labor, swinging short handled hoes, bending and breaking their backs in the heat of the fields. What I saw then as a barrier, a neighborhood not to enter, today is an open- ing for the hopes and aspirations of those still in the fields. From graffiti murals to Ben Shahn, murals are a window into both the daily mundane and the boundless dreams of millions. The Grapes of Wrath was not on my watch list when I lived in Oklahoma years ago. Today, I am moved by a story of workers’ exodus, whatever the reason. Ramin Bahrani’s film 99 Homes depicts those black blizzards, those engineered disasters, uprooting and destroying families through foreclosures. Filmmaker Michael Moore documents the decimating of towns, idled by shuttered manufacturing plants, abandoned by the chase of corporate profits. Thorney Lieberman’s’ full size portraits of coal country brilliantly capture the palpable grit that suffocates minors in black lung and condemns families to life sentences of poverty. These poignant pieces pose a personal ques- tion “What could I have done, had I only tasted their hopelessness, the very worst sort of hunger.” Be nourished, ameliorate that famine. In Chicago, I was a fan of heavy metal, not Joe Hill. I hear the sounds of his flagging spirit in the lyrics “and when Joe looked back at the sweat upon his tracks, he had nothing to show but his age.” Yet, at the end he is fortified with hope through trade unionism. Rap singer Cam’ron should heed Hill’s advice; he might have a happier outcome than what he finds in “I hate my job”. We should celebrate fast food workers marching under the Golden Arches to a remix of “Bread and Roses.” And those pink collar employees need not memorialize the grievous verse “She works hard for the money.” Music and melody be moved. I once bought a sculpture of “Lunch atop a skyscraper” from a street artist in . Every day for the last 15 years that vista of ironworkers, builders of dreams, seated on that girder with feet dangling, has hung on my office wall. I can touch their courage, fused with steel. I am melded into their lofty aspirations. Yes, dream big they say, the sky is the limit. Art enables possibility. Labor in art is a testament to a working person’s indomitable spirit. It celebrates, evokes, transcends, and transforms. Art and labor entreat a sense of urgency; close the gap of wealth’s great divide. Ensure the next generation never need know the words of this unknown proletarian, “We have fed you all, for a thousand years. And you hail us still unfed, though there’s never a dollar of all your wealth, but marks the worker’s dead. We have yielded our best to give you rest - And you lie on crimson wool. Then if blood be the price of all your wealth, Good God! We have paid it in full.” Roger Smith is CEO of American Income Life and National Income Life Insurance Companies

28 DC Labor Film Fest 2011 DC LABORFEST EVENTS in 1831 came to define America as a place where anyone could climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Following in the Frenchman’s footsteps, Fugelsang speaks with fast-food wor- kers and retirees, prisoners and entrepreneurs, undocumented immigrants and community organizers about their hopes, dreams, and daily struggles. DREAM ON explores whether the optimistic spirit of the American Dream that Tocqueville observed is alive and well in the twen- ty-first century, or whether George Carlin was right when he famously quipped “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.“ US; 1 hr, 39 min. produced and directed by Roger Weisberg; DOC https://vimeo.com/116867507 HARVEST OF EMPIRE Tues, May 3, 6p Busboys & Poets, 5331 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781 RSVP here: http://tinyurl.com/dclaborfest-harvest Hosted by Maryland Delegate Jimmy Tarlau and Senator Victor Ramirez; co-sponsored by Hyatts- ville Mayor Candace Hollingsworth & Delegate Alonzo T. Washington Based on the groundbreaking book by journalist Juan González of Democracy Now, this documentary astutely examines the role that U.S. military and corporate intervention in Latin America played in triggering massive waves of migration from Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. The film also offers a powerful glimpse into the enormous sacrifices and rarely noted triumphs of the millions of Latino immigrants who are transforming the nation’s cultural, eco- nomic and political landscape. With rarely-seen newsreel footage and perspectives from notable U.S. and international leaders, this film will appeal to all those who have an opinion about immigration. Features Geraldo Rivera, Junot Diaz, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Maria Hinojosa, Luis Enrique, Anthony Romero, and Rigoberta Menchú and others. THE HAYMARKET HANDBILLS Thurs, May 19, 3:00 PM Library of Congress, Jefferson Building, 10 First Street, SE Washington, DC 20540, Lessing J. Rosenwald Room, LJ-205 130 years ago, workers exiting the factories and workshops of Chicago were handed two versions of a large, bilingual leaflet announcing a mass meeting that night in a popular city square. The purpose of the 1886 gathering was to denounce the shooting of four workmen the previous day at a rally for the eight-hour day. The shocking events that would transpire at the close of the meeting in Haymarket Square would reverberate throughout the world and grip the popular imagination of America for decades, resulting in the first “trial of the century,” the unjust execution of four anarchist labor organizers, and was the basis of the first May Day commemorations around the world. The two ver- sions of the handbill are still shrouded in controversy and are conside- red by some to be the most important pieces of paper in American labor history. Join librarian and AFSCME local 2910 steward David Fernán- dez-Barrial for a talk about the handbills and see the two remarkable 1886 originals from the Rare Book Reading Room of the Library of Congress. Moving to Los Angeles in 1974, Lawson continued his nonviolence organizing in multi-racial community and worker coalitions that have helped to remake the LA labor movement. Co-stars Laura Dern. Ramin Bahrani’s visceral drama of real estate agency run amok is keenly honed to make your blood boil. Shannon is magnetic as Rick Carver, a reptilian broker who specializes in home foreclo- sure. Garfield plays one of his many victims, a hard-working tradesman who finds himself evicted from his home, only to then be offered work with Carver – doing unto others what’s just been done to him. Bahrani’s gripping premise is fuel for an enraged and enthralling indictment of the American wealth divide, heightened with the clammy pulse of a crime thriller. Garfield, channeling the wounded desperation of his star-making turn in The Social Network, is terrific as the everyman wrestling with a profound ethical conflict, but this is Shannon’s show – reining in his trademark histrionics for a coolly contained (but no less ominous) portrait of greedy malevolence. — JF, New Zealand Internatio- nal Film Festival DIR/SCR Ramin Bahrani; SCR Amir Ramin Bahrani/Naderi/Bahareh Azimi. AFI.com/Silver AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd, Downtown Silver Spring, MD Early in his career, the Austrian-born future Oscar® winner Fred Zinnemann (A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY) co-directed this politically and emotionally searing drama with Emilio Gómez Muriel. In this vivid, documentary- like dramatization of the daily grind of men struggling to make a living by fishing in the Gulf of Mexico (mostly played by real- life fishermen), one worker’s terrible loss instigates a political awakening among his fellow laborers. A singular coming together of talents, the film, commissioned by a progressive Mexican government, was co-written and gorgeously shot by legendary photographer Paul Strand. The score by Silvestre Revueltas is considered a classic of film music. The newly released DVD from Naxos features a new recording of the score by DC’s own PostClassical Ensemble (PCE), and will be available for purchase on site. Sherpa shifts the focus to the Himalayan locals who do most of the heavy lifting on the mountain they call Chomolungma. Veteran director Jennifer Peedom follows an expedition with Phurba Tashi Sherpa, preparing for his world record-setting 22nd ascent as a guide. Shot in 2014, the film also documents unprecedented upheaval as an ava- lanche kills sixteen Sherpas and the tragedy incites others to challenge the status quo. In a film of nail-biting suspense and stunning cinemato- graphy, Peedom sensitively explores the complicated dynamics — social, environmental, economic, and political — that have, with increasing peril, DC Labor Film Fest 2016 45 Congratulations and Much Success DC LaborFest & DC Labor Film Fest 2016!

Her narrative skilfully covers a wide cast of characters: the Sherpas include committed old hands and rebellious newcomers, while the outsiders range from compassionate toward the locals, to clueless. The film compares Eastern versus Western views on how to regard the mountain. Writer Ed Douglas, interviewed in the film, fills in the history that led up to the clashes of 2014. The number of adventurers looking to climb Everest has grown dramatically over time. Aerial shots reveal that its treacherous pathways have become a traffic jam of climbers, as hundreds of thrill-seekers pay up to $75,000 while sherpas earn around $5,000 for an entire season’s work. With the global rise of income inequality, Sherpa is particularly relevant as it details the stark contrast between those who undertake the hardest work and those who reap the benefits. - Thom Powers, TIFF DIR/SCR Jennifer Peedom; Australia/Nepal, 2015, color, 96 min; Documentary Trailer: http://tinyurl.com/dclaborfest-sherpa SHORTS: see Labor Shorts (page 35) SING FASTER: THE STAGEHAND’S RING CYCLE Wed, May 25, 7:00 Tickets: AFI.com/Silver AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd, Downtown Silver Spring, MD Hosted by IATSE 22, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees “Gods are out on stage singing about the great problems of the world...We’re doing all the hard work...all the small stuff. We’re just mere mortals,“ says Ken “Spike“ Kirkland, principal stagehand for the San Francisco Opera. In this unusual treatment of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Der Ring Des Nibelungen, the story is told solely from the viewpoint of the San Francisco Opera’s union stagehands as they perform astonishing feats of stagecraft and trade off- stage banter, offering a contemporary, insider’s perspective on a strange and complex 19th-century operatic tradition. SING FASTER condenses Wagner’s seventeen-hour epic into fifty-five minutes as the stagehands operate the tricky, snapping jaws of a huge, hydraulic dragon; wade through currents of fog, smoke and darkness; and maneuver looming, thousand-pound sets. During lulls in their fever-pitched work, crew members balance checkbooks, knit sweaters and gather for a ritual poker game in the grips’ lounge, just below the stage, where the talk ranges from the antics of the Wagnerian gods to Michael Jordan’s hamstring. In juxtaposing the opera’s physical machinery with its metaphysical meaning as seen by the workers, this documentary reveals the dynamic relationship between life and art. film is a fascinating evocation of life for woman across British society at the time, and brings us right up to date with on-going struggles faced by women around the world. Director Sarah Gavron and award-winning writer Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Shame) make strong and decisive dramatic choices by giving presence to the women that history remem- bers – Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) and Emily Davison (Natalie Press) – while pivoting the story on an everywoman whose experience stands in for the many activists whose names have been lost, but whose actions have prevailed. The WalGard Company—an alliance of govern- ment, corporate, and religious extremists—supervises a colossal Wall that stands between humans and the toxic waters that could potentially wipe out the human race. Imagination has stagnated and the society has been divided into the workers who must maintain the Wall and their masters. But some workers who have been infected are beginning to see visions of another world, and other possibilities of freedom. Enter the Temp who will begin a new way of “seeing”, a revolution for humankind. Lumina’s THE TEMP(est) is a spirited—and timely—adaptation of Shakespeare’s last great masterpiece which shows us the value of creativity in a world of worker struggles and ecological challenges. As a breach in the Wall threatens the very existence of humanity, the vision of Pros- pera’s magic, Ariel’s energy, and the young lovers’ optimism points the way to a brave new world.
