Visiting 51 villages in the UK, Puttenham was their only stop in St Albans Diocese and they rode right up to the doors of St Mary’s Church. Tring , the Revd Huw Bellis was there to greet them with several parishioners. Puttenham is one of the Thankful Villages, having no war memorial. The clue to why they don’t is in the word ‘thankful’. These are the villages whose soldiers in the 1914-1918 war all returned safely and included in them are fourteen doubly thankful villages whose soldiers all returned safely from the Second World War as well. Fifteen Puttenham men went to fight between 1914 and 1918 and returned alive. Grateful as the villages are, many soldiers who did return had been scarred physically, mentally, or both by their horrific ordeal. Huw said: “We are thinking about the best place to put the plaque.
