Uefa Europa League UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2014/15 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Jan Breydelstadion - Bruges Thursday 18 September 2014 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Club Brugge KV Group B - Matchday 1 Torino FC Last updated 11/09/2014 09:26CET Match background 2 Team facts 3 Legend 5 1 Club Brugge KV - Torino FC Thursday 18 September 2014 - 19.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Jan Breydelstadion, Bruges Match background Club Brugge KV will look to turn the tide as they take on Serie A opponents in the form of Torino FC in their opening UEFA Europa League Group B tie. Form guide • Club Brugge have lost their last five games against Italian opponents in UEFA club competition since a 1-0 UEFA Champions League triumph at AC Milan in the 2003/04 group stage. Each of those defeats were by one-goal margins, and they have also lost by the odd goal in their last four home fixtures against Serie A outfits. • Club Brugge won all four of their games in UEFA Europa League qualifying this season, and are unbeaten in three continental home fixtures (W2 D1); Torino also came through qualifying unbeaten (W3 D1) and have yet to concede in Europe this season. • Torino have not lost in four encounters with Belgian sides (W3 D1), and won both of their previous games in Belgium by one-goal margins. Trivia and links • Losing UEFA Cup finalists in 1992, Torino are playing in Europe for the first time since 2002. • Torino boast Belgian talent in the form of goalkeeper Jean-François Gillet (capped nine times), who has played in Italy since leaving his boyhood club R. Standard de Liège in 1999. Their on-loan Morocco midfielder Omar El Kaddouri was also born in Belgium, starting his career as a trainee at RSC Anderlecht. • Club Brugge's Brazilian midfielder Fernando played in Italy with AC Siena and Calcio Catania between 2003 and 2005. The coaches • Giampiero Ventura led Torino back to Serie A after taking charge in 2011, and is now enjoying – at the age of 66 – his first season in Europe. Previously a player at UC Sampdoria, he once led US Lecce from Serie C to Serie A, and also oversaw promotion to the top tier with Cagliari Calcio, as well as winning a club record 50 Serie A points with AS Bari in 2009/10. • A goalkeeper for R. Standard de Liège, KV Mechelen, SL Benfica and Belgium, for whom he won 58 caps, Michel Preud'homme has been in charge at Club Brugge since September 2013. As a coach, he has won league titles in Belgium (Standard, 2007/08) and Saudi Arabia (Al-Shabab FC, 2011/12) in addition to the Belgian Cup (KAA Gent, 2009/10) and the Dutch Cup (FC Twente, 2010/11). • Preud'homme came up against Torino's neighbours Juventus as a Standard player; his side drew 1-1 at home and lost 2-0 away in the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup. 2 Club Brugge KV - What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims.

If Antwerp avoid defeat against Ludogorets and LASK fail to win at home to Spurs, the Belgian side are guaranteed to qualify for the knockout phase. If LASK lose, Antwerp's head-to-head advantage over the Austrian side will take them through irrespective of their own result against Ludogorets. Previous meetings • Ludogorets' first meeting with Belgian opposition came on Matchday 1 when they were beaten 2-1 in Razgrad by Antwerp, who came from behind to win on their UEFA Europa League group stage debut with experienced European campaigner Lior Refaelov scoring the winning goal. • Antwerp's sole experience of Bulgarian opposition prior to that 22 October encounter was a famous 1989/90 UEFA Cup first-round tie against Levski Sofia (then called Vitosha), in which they drew the away leg 0-0 before sensationally scoring three late goals to overturn a 1-3 deficit and win the return fixture 4-3.

However, EURO 2008 convinced me that it was a good idea. Once again, the tournament illustrated the extraordinary passion generated by national team football and gave rise to such a fantastic party atmosphere that I felt it was only right for the tournament to be extended to more countries, to let even more supporters take part and to spread the excitement and party atmosphere far and wide across the continent. I also felt that the emotion of the tournament should be heightened by adding a direct knockout round for the last 16 in the competition and by ensuring that all the group matches, or the vast majority of them at least, would be crucial, by allowing the best third-placed teams through to the next round. The quality of the matches we saw during EURO 2008 also confirmed the high technical level of European football, and teams like England, Scotland and IN THIS ISSUE Denmark, or even Serbia and Ukraine – to name but a few – would certainly not UEFA Cup groups 03 have reduced the quality of the tournament.
